Hate his lead playing, but he's a tight rhythm guitarist for sure. Still, the new Slayer doesn't impress me too much... SoH was their highpoint, imo.

I don't understand. What is he talking about when he talks about his leads getting better? I mean it still sounds like tyres screeching.

zalant :
Are you trying to create some kind of intense mood during your solo or just playing the notes that feel right?

I usually don’t think about it as a whole, the whole song.

That right there speaks volumes about why King's soloing has always annoyed the piss out of most guitarists.

Metalplayer616 :
Personally, I'm not a fan of Slayer, and not much of a fan of King either.

I just like his fullout signature guitar by B.C. Rich, and I'm not talking about the little metalmaster pieces of ****, but his actual guitars pretty much.

Unhh unhh.

I know it's probably a typo, but I can just imagine Kerry going, "UN UN!" as a response.
Anyways, they should've asked him about a big four tour.

I think his leads are more for texture than anything else. When I first listened to Slayer the solos made me cringe, they still do but that's the point. Saw em live at mayhem and can't wait to get another job and see 'em again \m/

I'm sorry, but this guy comes off a bit stupid?
I like Slayer, infact, Americon is playing right now, coincidentally.

But...meh. This guy sounds like a 16 yearold whose spent about 3 years in the business, and now thinks hes "above it all", or rather, just an idiot 40 yearold.

-shrugs-, I hate the production on the new album, I demand Rubin and Andy get back in there, or I'll have to kill all the members of Slayer myself, but it was a cool album. Good band.

megaironpriest :
Kings solos are so boring and don't have anything musical about them. I'm glad at least he knows he just whammys all the time

Also Gus.G should be awesome with Ozzy, Zakk doesn't really fit into the same vein as players like Rhoads, Jake Lee

Cafas :
I'll always treasure the first four albums. Slayer are one of the bands that got me into metal, but at the end of the day, Hell Awaits and to a lesser extent, Reign in Blood, are the only albums where they really pushed the boundaries of their songwriting ability. And I include Reign in Blood simply because for its time, it was some of the most aggressive and balls out music around.

Now, they've become a parody of themselves, and I'd say they've been slowly declining since Seasons. They still put on a good live show, but it's like they're just going through the motions these days. They don't want to try to write something as important or vital as Hell Awaits, they just want to write neanderthal, self referencing half thrash.

The new album's great. I got it the day it came out and I've listened to it who knows how many times. To me personally, it sounds like a mix between Seasons and Christ Illuision. I love it.

An open tuning is a tuning that when you play all the strings open its a chord. Most famous being open D or Dsus4 DADGAD

liam1107 :
i used to like slayer, until i actually grew as a musician and realised, the leads arent played on guitar, there actually a kitten getting slowly destroyed by a rather strong grinder...
either way, kerry king seems pretty sound in this interview but still, his lead playing *cringe*
would love to see him doing a melodic duet with newton faulkner, see if he can write a tasteful lead =P

A lot of people are calling the new record their most powerful in the past 10 years so it seems a bit insane that they’d be talking about walking away from everything at this point.

I like Christ Illusion more than this album, it definitely is the better one to me.

In standard tuning, is it not still a chord to strum it open, technically?

I'm just glad he didn't talk shit about Gus G., though I'm sure this will start another debate about who's the better ozzy guitarist.

RX120D :
If you think Kerry King is so 'Brutal' at playing his instrument, you take his place and play their songs for 2 hours +, every night for a whole tour and then you tell me how 'Brutal' of a guitar player he is. You probably wouldn't even last a whole show before you started complaining "My hands are sore, my arms are sore." Have some respect for musicians that have done more in 25 years than you probably will in your whole life.

How can he not know what an open tuning is though....seriously.
