Rock Chronicles. 1970s: Angus Young/Bon Scott

  • When: July 23, 1978

  • Where: Oakland Coliseum (Oakland, California)

  • What: The band had moments ago walked off the stage at Bill Graham's third presentation of the Day On The Green concerts (other bands that day included Foreigner, Pat Travers, Aerosmith, and Van Halen [their first tour])) in Oakland, California, when I cornered guitarist Angus Young.

He was sipping on a beer and still flying high on the adrenaline rush from a chilling performance. We sat down at one of the many picnic-like tables they had set up backstage at the Coliseum. As I was setting up my $6 cassette player, this unbelievably drunk guy comes wandering over. He's loud and obnoxious and absolutely pinned to the gills with drink. I'm about to stand up and politely ask him to leave when Angus motions for him to cover over and sit down. I then realize, to my shock and concern, that it's Bon Scott.

This may not provide a tremendous insight into Bon's true persona - he was pretty well liquored up at this point and just exploding with energy - but it does show, that even to the last, he went out kicking like hell. And he was a very sweet drunk.

It is a tragic fact and a moribund irony in the rock world that sometimes the death of an artist represents his ultimate coup de grace, his emergence into the public eye and into the unofficial music hall of fame. Such was the case of Bon Scott, former lead singer of Australia’s AC/DC. For five albums, the band struggled to achieve a secure footing and it wouldn’t be until his untimely and disheartening death on February 19, 1980 that they finally managed to gain a foothold.

This conversation took place just after the release of Highway To Hell, Scott’s final album. Bon, as fiery offstage as he was on, was a colorful talker and not one to mince words. He was a rebel in his way, living an exaggerated style of life that used no clocks and paid little attention to tomorrows. The band’s onstage performances were perfect vehicles for Scott’s manic antics and at any concert one could see him bare-chested, sweating, singing like the possessed, and generally turning AC/DC into the act it would eventually become.

What are your feelings on the new record?

Angus Young: I think it’s great.

    The best you’ve done?

AY: Fuck, yeah. We spent a lot more time on this one. A lot more people are listening to the band than what they’ve ever done before.

"The band has a lot of rawness; it progressed, but it hasn't lost its feeling."
What is the process like when you record in the studio?

AY: They get me and they strap me to a seat and then say, ‘Go play.’

Bon Scott: When we record everybody thinks like one mind. Everybody gives suggestions and says, ‘Why don’t we try this?

Do you run around the studio when you’re cutting guitar parts?

AY: Yeah. I don’t know too much about the technical side of guitar; I never bothered with it. If you know too much, it all becomes complex and then you start dissecting and analyzing. I just like thinking of it as good clean fun, you know? The only times I pick up a guitar is when I feel like playing rather than six hours a day practice.

Where do the ideas for the songs come from?

AY: We pick up riffs and things on the road, you might come across somethin’ and it sticks in your head. We don’t just walk in and go, ‘Well, we’ve got nothing, what are we gonna do?” All sit around and twiddle our thumbs. We always have a good idea.

How would you say the band has developed since the first two albums until now?

AY: Oh, the band has gone a long way.

BS: And the fact that our music hasn’t changed.

AY: The band has a lot of rawness; it progressed, but it hasn’t lost its feeling.

BS: No matter how long you play rock and roll for, the songs might change, just as long as the balls is always there.

AY: A lot of people take us wrong; people criticize us because they say we can’t play. It’s a lot of bullshit.

BS: Shit, man, we could play fuckin’ …

    AY: … two hundred chords.

BS: Anything, jazz, whatever. But we choose to do what we do. Anybody who criticizes that is themselves, they’re thinking wrong, we’re not thinking wrong, they are.

AY: I hate bands that go above people’s heads, you know? You know, musically they’re trying to put shit on an audience and that’s what they are doing. They’re not going with ‘em, they’re going against ‘em.

"No matter how long you play rock and roll for, the songs might change."
So people like John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola bores you?

AY: Fuck yeah. If I wanted to sit down and play like John McLaughlin, I could. It would be a piece of shit to me.

Do you listen to any other music?

    AY: No, not really.

    What about other guitar players?

AY: Not if I know I can to it myself. I like watching flamenco guitarists. People say, ‘Listen to this’ and it just sounds like the guy next door. There are a lot of good guitarists in the world but you just lose interest. It’s like if you saw Pete Townshend when he first started off, it was all bang, bang the hell out of the guitar. But the style he plays is probably the most imitated in the world. (Eric) Clapton was happening but he got too technical. He made 12 bars seem like a big thing. There are a hell of a lot of good players around, so many you can’t keep track. But I haven’t brought a record in years except something like Muddy Waters.

So you were aware of people Clapton and Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page?

AY: Yeah, they’ve been ripping me off for years. At the time I was playing, these were all the people who were famous. Jeff Beck I don’t know about; all I ever heard of Jeff Beck was when he played rock and roll, I don’t know what he’s doing now. And Jimi Hendrix was an entertainer. He was on The Old Grey Whistle Test (television program) in England and he was playing ‘Wild Thing’ or something like and all that was was fuckin’ noise.

And how do you feel about punk bands? Any sympathy for them?

    AY: None.

    BS: What’s a punk band?

definately going to have to disagree. ballbreaker was a return to that old dirty dirty bluesrockish sound a la powerage

What an idiot, I like AC/DC, but these guys should have some respect for John McLaughlin and Al Dimeola, both of them are infinitely better than Angus will ever be, and I bet everything I own that Angus can't "play like that".

Jesus, their music doesn't go over my head! Maybe Angus young is just too much of a simpleton to appreciate art.

    well that was amusing.

Page,Clapton, and Beck ripping off Angus.

Meanwhile they had been playing twice as long as him.

Angus wasn't even born until about 1959.

The main riff of Have A Drink On Me has the same move as a part in the solo of Dazed and Confused

Some of the things they said in this are exaggerrated though. Angus has said he enjoys playing classical guitar once in a while. But, simplicity doesn't always equal bad, just like speed/complex/ doesn't make a song good. creating a good sound is the first priority. and he was born in 1955, not '59

When you only have 4 chords in your entire musical library, it's not hard to imagine hes ripped off quite a few songs. But yes i agree, I think some of the stuff they said was spoken in a sarcastic matter. I think they know what a punk band, and that they also know that Clapton, Beck, and most guitar players for that matter would wreck 'em.

    Dear whats in a name:
I'm going to be nice to you.
First of all, you have a disturbing lack of knowledge of Ac/Dc's amplifier settings and effects line. Very, VERY little distortion is used in most of what they play.

Secondly, if you can honestly think of anything bad to say about this band's choice of chordy rock, you should spend more time complaining to the metalheads about how all their guitarists do is run scales and swoops over and over again. Then, pick up a guitar, and try to play Kicked in the Teeth (off powerage)as good as angus does, while running around on stage, and if you can, good for you, you STILL need to get your head on straight before saying something about a band that is known and loved worldwide by several generations and guitarists that have influenced many to follow.

That and what they're saying is sarcasm (that point can't be brought up enough)...

i love 'em, angus is my freaking hero. idk why people are freaking out and hating on 'em, its pretty obvious theres a good amount of levity in what they're saying. I gotta say, though, Angus is like a living incarnation of rock n' roll, everything that rock is, ballsy, in your face, unafraid of pissing folks off, is culminated in that tiny little fella with limitless energy in a schoolboy uniform playing face melting solos that say "**** you" to everything.

Long Live Angus, and RIP Bon...

Bon Scott was a character. Brilliant lyrics and rocking style. I wouldn't like to be in a band that are on after AC/DC. They totally rip the audience up and never take themselves too seriously off and on the stage. AC/DC are better rockers than Led Zep. Even Iommi says so. They just make me wanna pick up an SG and rock.

Well I disagree, AC/DC is and has always been about the Young brothers and no disrespect to Bon, but Brian is a much better vocalist.

That's it I'm buying an SG! Maybe get a school uniform too. AC/DC annoyed the crap outta my ex-wife so good riddance to her and her poppy nonsense. Bring on the next album and tour. I saw them at the legendary Glasgow Apollo (not the IYWB recording). They were awesome. The critics can pan them all they like but do the Youngs really care? They've worked damn hard to get AC/DC the status they deserve. They came out of tough Australian and European joints and are well versed in putting on an excellent show.

new songs, old songs, first chord every time, you KNOW it's AC/DC. Maybe boring to some, maybe iconic to others. You can say that they haven't progressed any. You can argue that they have stayed true to their sound. In my opinion, it would be much harder to do the exact same thing (chords and the whole partying and getting laid aspect) in that many different ways with one recipe, such as they have done, without showing the growth that they all have experienced as musicians is somewhat of an anomoly. Take it for what it's worth. The Aussies just have a totally different attitude than most.

He was on The Old Grey Whistle Test (television program) in England and he was playing ‘Wild Thing’ or something like and all that was was ****in’ noise.

LOL!!!!! First things first, this article reeks of FAKE...and secondly, I highly doubt that a 8 year old Angus Young was influencing Page or Clapton in 1963 when the Yardbirds was formed...and I highly doubt that when he was 18 in 1973 that he had any influence on any of the classic rock guitarists from the 60's or 70's for that matter. What an ego...thats like me saying I influenced Kurt Cobain and Nirvana/Nevermind because I was 9 in 1991 playing power chord fueled punk songs. LOL..I hate Angus Young even more then before...but wait. This is a fake interview forgot that.

i wrote this out longer and more detailed once then my internet ****ed itself so im doing a short one. they all lived in australia for ages, malcom was about 5 and they formed here. i think angus means he didnt get his moneys worth when he bought stuff by page or clapton. angus actually started playing when he was 5 anyway by stringing a banjo like a guitar just for the info. plus bons off his face and i reckon angus would have had about at least 4 bottles/cans. angus was and is a purist and his veiw is effects are making something sound better then it is, like how techno is usually some dick with a keyboard a wahwah and some drum samples. he plays almost clean with just enough gain that u can hear it. angus also jumped onto the floor without skipping a beat, in a school uniform. try it, if you dont value your back much.

All my Kudos to Bon (besides having teh best name ever) and Angus for showing us all that a good show, adrenaline, a few whikseys (spelled that way for a reason, think about it) and some sarcasm will forever be a shining light for non-conformists everywhere! Can't believe how many people are missing the humour in this!! AC/DC never pretended, and still dont, to be anything but a rock and roll band. Most of the lyrics are about drinking fighting and shagging and not much else but thats the clever thing, thats what most of us like doing when we go out. They dont want to make a point, they dont want to try to stop war and famine, they just want every one at their gigs to get wrecked and dance around like nutters, attempting the goose-step. Good on em.

Also, they are very well liked in the rock and roll circle, they have played with practically every band under the sun are probably good mates with Mr Beck, Mr Claptout and Mr Townsend. You rib your mates dont you? You got to have banter, and thay have it.

Just wanted to say that angus never drank alcohol when he was on stage, so dont blame his humor on him being drunk.
