you didnt make eye contact with Bonzo because like a paranoid animal hed take it as a challenge and a threat, add the alcohol that was ever present and your dead if not from Bonzo then from his gaurds, similar to being in a tigers enclosure, if you follow the rules you might not die. This was great info, and verified a couple things that I always suspected about the Zep sound..

1) Tunings. Notice how when asked, Jimmy said that he uses differnt tunings on almost every studio cut and NEVER used open tunings? Being a prideful rhythm player myself, it's Jimmy chordwork that has always blown me away, stuff like the acoustic work on "The Rain Song","Over The Hills and Far Away" and "That's The Way" come to mind. Jimmy's tunings are from someplace on freaking Mars.

What I found interesting is that he wouldn't answer the question directly, prefering to keep his tunings to himself. Those are the Keys To The Kingdom!

2) Secondly, what he was talking about regarding mike placement is SO CRITICAL, yet so overlooked. The acoustic dynamics of any space is Square One of what the overall final product is going to be. It's the difference between the tone of a jumbo guitar and a ukelele, it's all in the reverberation chamber.

Great article. Loved it. Answered some stuff I've wondered about for years!

back in those days rock was taking a new direction with the stones, clapton, hendrix etc coming through, and these guys were all on the edge inventing new ways all the time.
whats the situation with all that these days, im a musician and so ive always wondered what there is left to do. it seems like its all been done. nothing (that im aware of) is groundbreaking these days. its all f**king 'under my umbrella ella ella (add infinitum)" and my chem emo bitching about how they want to kill themselves etc, and the only decent music is 60s/70s/80s style rock/sleaze/rock n roll/punk. which is all good, but it isnt really developing at all, its kinda already all been done.

whats the cutting edge? whats the amazing music these days which will be reveered in a couple of decades?

how can one make music these days which is new and fresh and really rocks without sounding like something which has already been done. i play in a rock/punk band (which your welcome to check out www.meettheescape.com) and i enjoy our music and think its ok for what it is (i realise were not the best musicians ever ) but i know were not doing anything new really. what the f is it all about these days? what can our generation do thats new and will be remembered?

p.s. im not trying to figure what to play so that i can sell loads of records or anything like that, its just that its easy looking back to see what music characterised different generations, but looking at the rock scene of today it all seems to have lost direction and its just spinning wheels kind a thing.

Bonham was a great drummer, but a complete ******* as a person. He was into coprophilia and thought it was hilarious to take a dump in groupies` handbags. The rest of the band weren`t much better either. Also, they were a great live band, but after "Physical Graffiti", the albums were patchy to say the least and their final release, "Coda" was pure crap. Page is still one of greatest blues/rock guitarists of all time though...

AAHH!! i love how page is so deep with music. his whole take on it all being orchestrated is really interesting. and to mrjimborinsane, the point of inventing new things is that they dont exist. you dont think of something and make it, you accidentally find it by just screwing around. grab ur guitar and play it with something odd. i like to hold my watch up to the pickup to so it picks up the tick of the second hand. i found that out when i was muting te strings and just sitting with the volume up. dont try to invent anything. just se what ur guitar can do when combined with other objects.

yeah ive been noticin the exact same thing, i hear all these emo bands and some of them are only average or theyre just simply not good at all, and all their songs sound like ive heard it be4, and the metal bands are gettin pretty repetitive as well, bands like trivium, shadows fall and killswitch engage are good but theyre not bringin anythin new to music at all, and when i hear a new band doin a pentatonic-based solo, it kinda annoys me cos that whole blues/rock thing has gotten really really old, so i can understand what yer tryna say, a lotta music from the 60's onto the 90's is good and fresh but everythin after that gets kinda lost and repetitive, not all recent bands are like that but a lot of the REALLY unique ones dont get the attention they deserve, just shows how trendy the music industry is, they only sign the below average emo bands who arent bringin anythin new to the table, when all the innovative bands get turned down, this generation needs a band to shake things up like zeppelin did back in the day

AAHH!! i love how page is so deep with music. his whole take on it all being orchestrated is really interesting. and to mrjimborinsane, the point of inventing new things is that they dont exist. you dont think of something and make it, you accidentally find it by just screwing around. grab ur guitar and play it with something odd. i like to hold my watch up to the pickup to so it picks up the tick of the second hand. i found that out when i was muting te strings and just sitting with the volume up. dont try to invent anything. just se what ur guitar can do when combined with other objects.
How would I come across it?!Theres a huge picture with the instructions.

They're SOOOOO over-rated...I kinda like 'em..I just see no "great Invention" From Page or anyone else, just wierd tunings..but then again..I could just sit there with half a mind of Music theory and do that as well. They were just a bunch of boosers that had egoes to big to fit in with the rest of the band in one plane...and Page isn't some "Guiter God"... that would be Yngwie Johann Malmsteen, Or Brian May, Page isn't very musical either if you ask me. Oddly enough, Switchfoot is nearly right.

The Satanic Bible doesn't say anything about a "bo to a cello" - it suggests a cane if you don't have a sword - but it does say, "Turning counter clockwise, the priest points with the sword to each of the cardinal points of the compass and calls forth the respective Princes of Hell: Satan from the south, Lucifer from the east, Belial from the north and Leviathan from the west." (Point 8 of the Thirteen Steps)

It's been on the shelf for years with the other Bibles, Torahs, Vedas and things. I'd never read it before. It's not what you expect. Cheers, Switchfoot!

actually you could be surprised how much page and all the other members of zeppelin have done for music, page has written some of the catchiest riffs, and the most haunting solos, you should look beyond the songs you hear on the radio, and listen to ones from their later albums....it may sound regular when compared to more recent rock bands, but in the 70's it was new to every1

So you are saying if I point in all 4 directions, I am summoning Satan, Lucipher, Belial, and Leviathan. First of all, that's ridiculous. Second of all, Why isn't there any direction I can point in to summon Jesus? Jimmy Page sold his soul to the devil. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Complete nonsense. If I go down in my basement and point in all 4 directions, would I suddenly be possessed by Satan and start playing like Jimmy Page. And the Stairway to Heaven backwards is ridiculous, too. Has anyone other than me sat down for more than 30 seconds and actually thought about Led Zeppelin putting satanic messages on their records. I bet you also think 9/11 was an inside job, and think that the murder of JFK was a conspiracy. You don't like Led Zeppelin, just say that. Don't accuse Jimmy Page of being Satan.

i agree and disagree, i believe hes one of the most influential players of semi-recent times, however from a technical stand point some are better, but alex scholnick isnt one of them, neither is hammet.

jesus, "from a technical point some are better"

from a technical standpoint there are a whole lot of people that play more like robots than page did. i believe that's a large part of what made him such an influential guitarist. listen to the interview; he left mistakes, flubs etc. all the time. Too many guitarists are too concerned with technical precision and getting everything absolutely perfect. It takes so much out of the music. You may as well just synthesize the whole thing if all you want is perfect playing.
**** it, page was one of the golden guitar players.

Experimentation, honesty, mystery, and variety, that's what's missing out of today's rock music

Certainly, you visit the church too often, if you believe in this kind of bullsh*t so easily.

It has nothing to do with the Church, it has to do with lacking common sense saying Jimmy Page was satanic. All of Zeppelin dabbled in the occult from time to time, but it was hardly meant to be evil. Plus,he's a guitar player for crying out loud; thats what everyone loves him for, not any sort of occult rituals. Admire/judge him for his talent, not who he is as a person.

geez, it actually has been provent that you can't recognise the so called 'satanic messages' in Stairway To Heaven unless you are prompted prior to listening.

Also, Jimmy Page is one of the best guitarists in the world, all the stuff that is around today, heavy metal, death metal etc etc, was spawned from Bands Like Led Zeppelin, The Yardbirds, Clapton, The Who the list goes on, but Jimmy Page was one of the most inventive guitarists of all time and lots of artists have copied his techniques (Like Eddie Van Halen)
