What if you refuse to do root notes. Because you can do alot better than root notes.

Thats what I've wanted for a while. I play guitar mainly but also have a bass and wanted to do more than just root notes when writing. Very good.

playing LIKE flea is fairly easy, being as good as flea at it is hell.

jsbassboy :
wow yeah it takes alot of practice to be able to play like flea, and even after along time of covering RHCP songs i still cant play all of his stuff

basically, you're not going to learn it in one lesson, especially not a relatively simple one like this

teazybass :

Just switched from guitar to bass and this was nothing i didn't already know although i have been playing for a while. Good refresher. Steve Harris is quite good for passing notes.

Hey nice lesson man, glad to see people getting stuff out there for the bass. And too all the people who want to learn to slap or play like flea or any body else, it takes allot of practice and dedication to be able to do those things, there is no easy way. Just try and you'll get it eventually =)

I play 4ths a lot, but roots are essential regardless. Plus you can find the root in different octaves and make it sound more tense or deep.

Either way, if your a bassist in a band at some point your playing the root, even if its a setup for a Wooten style transitions. Nothings worst than watching a band live where the bassist is trying to steal the show. Sounds horrible, wait for your solo!!!

Personal rule of mine: its okay to play the root, so long as thats not all your playing.

Keep at it, normally it takes wanting to play a song you like really bad to figure it all out.

Great lesson. I've been playing for 4 years and I'm picking up a couple of things. I hate the root note drag. Luckily my metal band keeps me plenty busy, so I don't have to root note riffs to often. The Root note phase is terrible...
