In Speed Playing 5 we will be using all the techniques I've taught but there going to be slightly more advanced versions. Hopefully this lesson will expand your guitar licks and also inspire you to create your own excersises. We will be looking at: 1. 4 note-per-string alternate picking. 2. Advanced sweep picking. 3. Wide stretching licks. ====================================================================

4 Note-per-string alternate picking

Although it may sound like a challenge, the picking pattern is actually simple as rather than up-picking on the string change down for example it actually goes down, up, down, up and then just repeats itself. The only challenge Id say you might find here is the fact that there are 4 notes per string so it might have to stretch your hand slightly:
E|-------------------------------------------
B|-------------------------------------------
G|-------------------------------------------
D|----------------------7-9-10-12------------
A|------------5-7-8-10-----------------------
E|--5-7-8-10---------------------------------
    D U D U D U D U D U D U
As you can see its a very simple patterns its just the last note on each string that may challenge you. For example on the first string I use my first, third and fourth fingers for the 5th, 7th and 8th fret. Then I slide my fourth finger up quickly to reach the 10th fret, start slow and work your way up by trying these:
E|--------------------------14-15-17-19------
B|--------------12-14-15-17------------------
G|--11-12-14-16------------------------------
D|-------------------------------------------
A|-------------------------------------------
E|-------------------------------------------
     D U D U D U D U D U D U

E|--7-5-3-2----------------------------------
B|-----------5-3-1-0-------------------------
G|--------------------5-4-2-0----------------
D|-------------------------------------------
A|-------------------------------------------
E|-------------------------------------------
    D U D U D U D U D U D U
Okay for that one Id suggest using your fourth, second and third finger for the 7th, 5th and 3rd fret then slide your first finger down to hit the second. One more:
E|---------------------------------------------------12-14-15-17---
B|-----------------------------------------------------------------
G|--------------------------------------12-14-16-17----------------
D|--------------------------12-14-16-17----------------------------
A|--12-14-15-17----------------------------------------------------
E|--------------12-14-15-17----------------------------------------
     D U D U D U D U D U D U D U D U D U D U

Advanced sweep picking

Okay I think I've done alot on sweep picking but I realised that I could discuss more ways to use it rather than just going up and down in one spot. First lets move some shapes around and make a sweep pick last a bit longer:
E|--12p8---------8-12p8-------12-17p12----------12-17p12-------17-20--------
B|-------10---10--------10s13----------13----13----------13s17-------17-----
G|----------9-----------------------------14----------------------------17--
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
A|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
E|--------------------------------------------------------------------------

E|----------------10-14p10-------14-17p14------------------------------
B|-------------10----------10s15----------15----------------------15---
G|--------7s11-------------------------------14-------------11s14------
D|------7---------------------------------------16-------12------------
A|--5h9--------------------------------------------17s12---------------

E|--19p16-------------12p7----------7p4----------------
B|--------17---------------9------------5--------------
G|-----------16-0------------9-0----------4-0----------
D|----------------14-------------9------------6-9------
A|-----------------------------------------------------
E|-----------------------------------------------------
E|-----------------------------------------------------
Rather than do these big shapes, try little 2 string pull-offs and hammer-ons around the fretboard like so:
E|--15p12----------------------8p3------------------
B|--------13-----------------------5----------------
G|-----------12p9--------------------7p0------------
D|----------------10---------------------2----------
A|-------------------10p7------------------7p3------
E|------------------------8--------------------3----
Finally a favourite trick of mine is to take any arpeggio, any shape and rather than go just up and down, alternatly go up and down like this:
E|--------------12-15p12----12----------------------------
B|-----------13----------13----13----13-------------------
G|--------12----------------------12----12----12----------
D|-----14----------------------------------14----14-------
A|--15----------------------------------------------15----
E|--------------------------------------------------------

E|--------14-19p14----14-----------------------------------
B|-----15----------15----15----15--------------------------
G|--16----------------------16----16----16-----------------
D|-----------------------------------16----16----16--------
A|--------------------------------------------17----17-14--
E|---------------------------------------------------------

E|-----------------------8----8-12p8-------------
B|---------------10---10---10--------10----------
G|--------9----9----9-------------------9--------
D|-----10---10----------------------------10-----
A|--12---------------------------------------12--
E|-----------------------------------------------
Your brain might be going, oh god how do I pick this but I just hold my pick quite slanted so it glides through the strings easily and then just let it flow through the strings following my picking hand. ====================================================================

Wide stretching licks

Heres some challenging wide stretching licks for you to try, remeber to keep your thumb in the middle of the neck to help your fingers:
