Hi beautiful people. We're almost finishing our Tasty Guitar Routines, but before that, let's do some delicious Legato exercises. Always remember to stretch and warm up (look for Tasty Guitar Routines #1) before doing the following exercises. Here we go! Important: While practicing Legato, we'll pluck the first note and then Hammer On / Pull off the next one(s), so choose whatever stroke feels right for you (downstroke or upstroke). You also want to start at a slow and comfortable tempo (30 50 bpm doing sixteenth notes) and slowly (yes, very slowly) start to speed up the whole routine. It's important in many of these exercises to maintain a constant speed (and in every other exercise you do). Notation: P = Pluck string T = Tap the note with the fretting hand. h = Hammer On p = Pull Off

Lesson 4: Legato

As a tradition, let's start with the legato "Ipsy Dipsy Spider" exercise (I love how you can practice almost everything with it). Fig. 1: Legato "Ipsy Dipsy Spider" (Keep going until you're out of frets)

Now it's time for an awesome exercise. It will cover a lot of positions and variations. It's a little long, but it's truly worth it! Fig. 2: Legato Awesomeness Above the tablature there will be numbers that represent the fingers you should use: 1 Index Finger 2 Middle Finger 3 Ring Finger 4 Little Finger simile Repeat the same finger pattern (After you finished the whole thing, repeat on each string). It looks like a mess, but once you know how it goes it will be easy to follow.

At last! If you read carefully perhaps you noticed a gap (10p5h6h10p6p5 is missing). It's because this is really a Huge gap and in this position and it's almost impossible to do. You can try though! To wrap this up let's take the Major Scale one more time and do some fancy Legato stuff: Fig. 3: Legato Major Scale (Pluck only the first note on each string and repeat at least 2 times)

Done. As always, this is just a glimpse of the Legato possibilities on the guitar, but they will offer a good start and will get your fingers going. Until next time folks! Don't forget to leave your thoughts, comments and suggestions. Love!
