Hey zerogarrett18 here. In this lesson I will be both explaining the "ins and outs" of legato and providing you with tabs for you to practise so that you can apply your new knowledge to your music. So it's time for some theory..(Sorry) The word "LEGATO", when applied to the guitar, is a word to describe the smooth, fluid note transitions along your fretboard. The way that this is shown in staved music is with a curved line under the notes. Legato is created by connecting "hammer-ons" and "pull-offs" usually as triplets (3 notes), quintuplets (5 notes) or septuplets (7 notes). Due to this connectivity of "hammer-ons" and "pull-offs" many guitarists begin to struggle when it comes to finger independance and strength. So to battle this I suggest that you practise the following tablature so that more advanced legato becomes achievable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------2h3p2-2h4p2-2h5p2-3h4p3-3h5p3-4h5p4--
-2h3p2-2h4p2-2h5p2-3h4p3-3h5p3-4h5p4--------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------1h2p1-1h3p1-1h4p1-2h3p2-2h4p2-3h4p3--
-1h2p1-1h3p1-1h4p1-2h3p2-2h4p2-3h4p3--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------2h3p2-2h4p2-2h5p2-3h4p3-3h5p3-4h5p4--
-2h3p2-2h4p2-2h5p2-3h4p3-3h5p3-4h5p4--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This exercise should be done for about 20 minutes a day and I promise that if you do this you will notice a major improvement in your finger independance. Okay once you have this down you want to make it slightly harder by making a quintuplet legato riff. So here you go!
---------------------------------------------------2h3h5p3p2--------------
-----------------------------------------2h3h5p3p2------------------------
-------------------------------2h4h6p4p2----------------------------------
---------------------2h4h5p4p2--------------------------------------------
-----------0h2h5p4p2------------------------------------------------------
-2h3h5p3p2----------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have mastered styles like these it will be time to move to much harder riffs. I will add more in the future but for now I will leave you with this last advanced legato riff.
