My Songwriting Techniques Pt. 2: Lyrics
Sorry it has taken so long to write this. I really had to think about my process.

Step 1: Find Something Meaningful

It is obvious, in order to write a good song, it has to have meaning. One example: recently I read a story under ultimate guitar's columns (The Last Hour Pt. 1). It was really deep, and I was able to connect to many of the emotions of the main character. I wrote lyrics about it. I will include these as an example at the end.

Step 2: Try To Isolate Your Own Emotions

Find out why something is meaningful to you. Does it remind you of someone? Of some place? Of some time?

Step 3: Word Association

Pick apart the concept into 3 or 4 pieces. From each of your pieces, draw from experiences that you or even your friends have had with this event, emotion or idea.

Step 4: Write

Based on what you gathered so far, you should have a few lines to go off of. You probably have an idea of what you want your song to sound like so go off of that. As promised - my example: DeathGrip You try to lift me up But still I bring you down As you work to remove The sharp thorns of my crown You found me in the void The knife pierced through my chest And I pushed you away Told you to take a rest I'm giving up The time is upon me And I ****ed up You're hanging up on me But still I try To find my way By holding on To things you say After they sold my pain You sold me my mercy And you looked down upon The demons that cursed me Gave me a second chance For no apparent reason But then I breathed the air And I took in the poison I need the answer My world is caving in Give me a sign The battle is within I'm giving up The time is upon me And I ****ed up You're hanging up on me But still I try To find my way By holding on To things you say Not giving up The time is upon me I won't **** up You're going to call me And I will say I found my way By holding on By holding on to everything
