liam is right, that is the real tab for smoke on water, alot of people tab it in the wrong key, they get the frets right but the strings wrong, makes them look stupid cos they either rushed tabbing it, or just don't know anything about music theory

Guys you all are kinda right - the tab for smoke on the water here is actually using power chords.

A power chord consists of notes 1 and 5 of the major scale. This tab is actually doing that exactly. However playing them in the right position etc.

And just to note it - and to let high voltage know im still around - these are my lessons all ripped from my web site www.geocities.com/apeguitar. All formatting mistakes in the lessons (which there are way too many of!) are because when high voltage copied and pasted my material, he didnt take note of some formatting procedure i went through to get the layout i wanted. To cut a long story short, this guy copied. *very annoyed*

high voltage,

I appreciate your time and energy in helping the rest of us, and would just like to add this version of Smoke On The Waer from The Ultimate Guitar Songbook:
(very basic form -my 1st attempt @ Tab)

e-----
B-----
G
-----
D--5--8--10---5--8
--11--10---5--8--10---8--
5-----
A--5--8--10---5--
8--11--10---5--8--10---8-
-5-----
E-----

Sounds
great w/distortion. Doesn't get any easier than those bar chords my friends, and if you listen to the song, I think the "muffled" rhythm is bar chords on the same strings, but I'm still working on that.

Here's the version of "Smoke..." that I was taught (try it both ways and play the version you like best. I've tried both of them and although I think mine is the way I've seen Ritchie Blackmore play it, high voltage's version still rocks!)

It doesn't get any easier than bar chords, my friends!

Sorry 'bout the triple post, folks. It kept telling me I had to sign in, so I kept signing-in. Finally, on the 3rd try I see the triple post. *sigh*
Any ideas on how to get the tab to post properly?

Please remove my messages posted under "Basics, Lesson3" -I didn't realize you don't allow postings from official tab books.

that tab is the right version for smoke on the water. just add a lot of bass to it to get the right sound, works for me on my amp. mind, turn off the pick up selector switch.

This *power chord* tabbed here uses perfect fourths, not fifths.

Ahhh well it does have the root and a fifth.. but it's inverted. Is there an actual proper way to look at this form?

I need some clarification: in the chord progressions at 100 bpm are we supposed to play the down strokes with the G chord and the up strokes with all open notes or we do both the up and down strokes with the G chord?
