I've had the DT album for about a month (yes... illegally) but I bought it the day it came out as well, and I am extremely fond of it. I got into DT when Train of Thought came out and loved them then. I picked up all the albums at that point, loving all of them (especially Six Degrees... and Scenes). This album has been a great milestone IMO, I think they'll pick up lots of fans from the album. It's really diverse, and all really well done
POSTED: 07/03/2009 12:17pm

Shadow, i happen to be a great fan of KsE but i agree with this guy, the new album left me sorely disapointed. Its still not a bad record by any means, its great, but it lacked a certain something present in their earlier stuff.
Dream Theaters new album though, wow, what a great album. Its amusing, in almost all the reviews ive seen, the shattered fortress has had such differing likes. Some seem to absoultely love it and see it as one of their best songs, and others dont like the fact that it just recyles bits of the rest of the AA suite. I for one love it, but feel once you get to about 8 minutes in the amount of repition of other songs gets a little bit annoying, but for the first 8 or so minutes its AMAZING .
POSTED: 07/03/2009 12:25pm

I'm gonna have to call shenanigans. It'll be pretty good, but there's no way it'll be better than the new Augury or Suffocation albums or Denial's full-length debut.

Speaking of which: Pete, get on that new Augury and the Denial debut ASAP. They both slay babies.
POSTED: 07/03/2009 01:05pm

1. Dream Theater's new album is awesome and IMO is ranked in the top tier with I&w,Awake,Scence And Six Degress. Good just making number 6 on the Billboard! That is unheardo of for a prog band, even with gay shit like the Jonas Brothers and Hannanh Montana plaguing US's radio airwav's and other forms of media.

2. Coming from a big Artillery fan, I was quite pleased with the new album. The guy aint no flemming however the album is solid and seems to incorparate By inheritance with a more moddern reflection of metal. Only took you guys almost 20 years to do it right but good job nevertheless!
POSTED: 07/03/2009 02:19pm

I really feel as though in the Killswitch review, you contradict yourself Pete...

From a purely stylistic point of view, this is “The End of Heartache”/”As Daylight Dies” with some new curtains. In other words – very little has changed and KsE remain true to the sound they made it big with. Does this sadden me? Yes, it does, because I'm afraid I was right in my assumption that they couldn't keep the ball rolling with the same sound.

I mean, you say it is the same, with just new curtains and all, and then say they didn't keep it rolling with the new sound? Am I misinterpreting this? Or did you just mean they didn't keep the same sound, which you called their best, and, uh make it better? How do you improve upon something that is your so-called best anyways? I mean, you go back and forth talking about them keeping their same sound, and them trying to get out of their comfort zone(which was clearly not achieved). I mean, make up your mind, do you want them to keep the same sound and make their best somehow better(something that is technically impossible), or step out of the comfort zone? Maybe I'm just a bit too drunk, but it doesn't make sense to me...
POSTED: 07/03/2009 03:21pm

BC&SL is a really good release. I'll definitely be getting tickets for their upcoming shows and probably more than one, as they tend to have completely different sets from show to show.

The KSE was a disappointment and don't worry Pete, it made perfect sense and wasn't contradictory. They could only go so far with the sound they were producing and this album suffered for it. I find they made it a little more bland, even though it's somewhat heavier. Let's say that if you painted all their albums with the same brush, the new self-title would be a paint-by-numbers.

I will definitely be checking out the new Artillery, as their old stuff is great. Defiance sounds interesting too. Is there any development on Wintersuns' "Time?"
POSTED: 07/03/2009 04:02pm

Absolutely NO mention of August Burns Red's new CD amidst all this stuff I've never heard of? Come on now. From the three songs I've heard on their myspace, that album's gonna be sick.
Also, I've sorta been out of the loop with Dream Theater. But this new album sounds like it's worth checking out.
And by the way, is it just me or do all prog metal singers sound the same? Dream Theater... Symphony X... Outworld when he's not hitting those screeching highs... All their voices sound so similar to me!
Good job! These are my favourite reviews by UG. I agree with you on the new KSE album. They should have tried a new sound. Btw, try to review the new august burns red album next month if you know the band even its metalcore :p.

I don't mind metalcore, not at all. Might feature it, no promises.
POSTED: 07/03/2009 04:17pm

Like throw in something new and interesting but still be KSE at the core. And what he's saying is that they jus rehashed their old sound but not as good as when they did it the first time around.

At least you did the new Dream Theater CD justice, I just wish UG would hire someone to do this that wouldn't have a bulging hard on for grind/death/black/as generic as mainstream/junk.

If KsE weren't so high profile, I wouldn't have bothered with them this month.
zAg1619 wrote:

I'll try to clarify. Their new album to me is stylistically the same as the two that came before it. Stylistically being that the elements present are the exact same. It's Blueprint KsE(tm) without the small details and nuances that made the albums preceding it so much better. I guess the new curtains were ugly.

As for if I wanted them to keep the same sound and make "their best somehow better"...sure, if they'd done that I'd been cool with it. I think they could've made their best better. TEOH being the best of the albums sharing this style is far from a perfect 10 in my book. I'd also been cool with they stepping out of their comfort zone and tried something new, in fact I ALWAYS want band to try this, regardless of style. It's better to try and fail than to remain in one place and sound stale.
POSTED: 07/03/2009 04:27pm

Disagree completely with DT and Killswitch Engage reviews. Black Clouds was pretty darn good albeit the lyrics are crappy and just plain ridiculous. I was actually surprised at La Brie`s performance on this album since he doesnt sound so much like a chicken compared to their recent releases. I'd say the album deserves at least an 8.5 not a 7.5. Killswitch Engage's album was serious crap. Nothing novel, nothing original, just more of the same. Sure they got a little better as musicians but they pretty much released As Daylight Dies again. I'd give it a 6 tops.
POSTED: 07/03/2009 05:32pm

Hey, where's the review of Drudkh's new album, Microcosmos? Or is it that you take the US release date and are going to put one up in July?

I will cover my forgetful ass and do it for July

Well ok then.. but just for the record, do u take US release dates? anyway, really nice that u gave destroyer 666 an 8!

I almost always go with the European dates...since I'm European.
POSTED: 07/04/2009 12:14pm

Black Clouds is an awesome album, get the special 3 disc eddition and listen to their cover of Queen. James LaBrie really captures Freddy Mercury's vibe, the cover is better than the originals in my oppinion. i actually think the lyrics in The Count of Tuscany are great, you can really picture yourself being in that situation and The Shattered Fortress is the end of that series. I think they wanted to really revisit all the songs before it to show the entire journey. IT's a very explosive song(in a good way)

what's up with everyone's obsession with 666? don't they realize what that is?
POSTED: 07/04/2009 01:35pm

I don't agree with the KsE review. Yeah, it wasn't their best album, but it wasn't their worst. I do have to say though that it does sound a lot like As Daylight Dies. if they released something like The End of Heartache, then I'm sure that more people would like it. I think Howard sang too much on this one.Yeah theres some really good songs, but 3/4 of the album doesn't really hook on me.

And by the way, I haven't heard of any other band they reviewed! KsE was the only band I'm familair with. They need to keep the reviews on one main genre. Just metal and the thing that are close to it like hardcore, thrash, etc. Not all the other stuff.
POSTED: 07/04/2009 10:39pm

I was skeptical based solely on the name of Destroyer 666, but I must say I'm very impressed with their new record. I listened to some of their earlier work and it's decent, but this blew me away. Great production and some nice guitar writing. Sounds like an interesting spin on a band like Dimmu Borgir. They are in the same genre though, so I can see why. Great stuff and I'll be trying to get that album on the 14th when it gets released.
POSTED: 07/05/2009 12:32am

Also, I've sorta been out of the loop with Dream Theater. But this new album sounds like it's worth checking out.

i gotta say, i loved all parts of dt's new album. IMO, the shatter fortress was the BEST way to end it. I mean every song had something new in it, and since this song ends the whole aa saga, why not review everything thats happened in the past 4 songs. and the ending was amazing, a very octavarium. and the count of tuscany, reverse to what others think, was really good. it had a story, and the music followed it all the way and it was one of my favorites on the album. best of times was amazing as well.
POSTED: 07/05/2009 11:08pm

That's because those bands belong to a pretty narrow band of prog metal. Not all prog metal bands include operatic-style vocals. Cynic, Tool, Opeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah... all represent a different vocal style, and all are most definitely progressive metal.

I've been very skeptical of DT's new album, because I just don't see them keeping my attention much longer as they don't vary much between albums. Though you seem to be saying that they've struck a good balance with this one, so perhaps I will be pleasantly surprised.
POSTED: 07/06/2009 12:08am
