les paul's aren't "better", but they have a very familiar tone because rock is so currently gibson dominated, so they sound "better" because they sound like what you hear on the radio. As far as their playability goes (i presume by playability you refer to speed), it depends on what style neck you get; 50s necks are much fatter (hate em) and 60s necks are really thin and playable (love em).
POSTED: 07/14/2006 11:00am

by playability i believe he means access to all frets. gibsons are one of the worst for upper fret access, we all can agree on that. however, people like me love the 50's style fat neck because i have large hands. thin necks make my hands cramp up... also, jumbo frets are on almost every guitar out there now except for gibson. gibson uses a fretwire that has a more transitional feel (less bumpy when shifting notes) which allows for better sliding. i own a schecter it has jumbo fretwire on it and i'd love to change the fretwire to the gibson style wire if i could.
POSTED: 07/14/2006 11:25am

But Eddie Van Halen, I mean, Eddie, the one and only man who can make a guitar succumb to his swift, light hands, placed his guitar in Dimebag's coffin! It was the one from the Van Halen II cover was what his brother said in an interview. Obviously Dimebag MUST have done something to deserve such an honor. Honestly, how many of you have dreamt of Jimi Hendrix (though dead), Eddie Van Halen, or Eric Clapton, somebody unique to the guitar, any way, how many have dreamt of being honored by their presence? Even after death?
POSTED: 07/14/2006 02:23pm

Les Pauls are not overrated. I love les paul's. I have a '80 les paul custom and it's great for how i play blues based rock.
but.....
It is not very comfortable to play things like pantera and suicidal tendencies. I want this guitar becAause it's a shredder's dream. I want both. In my opinion, all of these guitars are kick ass but, I think you have to match the guitar with the style. Les Pauls are bulky and heavy and get great tone because of it.
Dean's kick ass too. There's always pros and cons.420
Agree, but people also have their egos, and feel what they say is right should be right. The guitar is only as good as the player, you can have the most expensive guitar with the best effects and best pickups/woods/blah blah but if you suck what does it matter?

I've looked into getting one of these and played with one at the store the other day, just not my type. Couldn't get a good feel for it. So I'll be sticking with my Peavey.
POSTED: 07/15/2006 12:12am

Guitarist wouldnt prefer to use a Gibson over most of the other guitars out there if they werent so great no matter if they were sponsered by them or not. les pauls, gibsons, epiphones, and the mother of em all strats all are extremely overrated in my book i hate the way they play and theyre bulky, suck with distortion, have a way too conservative sound, and cost shitloads, it could be that im just a metalhead but i think that ibanez, shecter and dean all make guitars that are more affordable, sound better, play better, and look way sexier than those brands i listed earlier that most f you guys covet over

ya know, i sorta agree. imo les pauls and strats are really overrated. as an alternative i look for stuff thats more of a competetor against les pauls, while strats i just dont like. the feel just annoys the hell out of me. instead of the les paul im going to be trying to get a replica of the Ovation Ultra-GP. but dont get me wrong, les pauls can be amazing. it's all based on preference right?

and since when did the topic switch from the dean guit to les pauls and strats? either way, i saw this guitar in the shop, looked pretty sick but i didnt have time to try it..i think it's gone now, but if i see one i'll give it a test run.

and with the 'shredder' talk, a lot of the time 'shredder's' fail to recognize the melodic side of shredding. some people just think hit notes as fast as you can, and that's just retarded.
POSTED: 07/15/2006 04:50am

Each guitar has its own niche. The Les Paul just comes across to a broader spectrum of players. I guarantee that half of the people who play Deans now were inspired by a Gibson player in the past, anyways >.< So quit'cher bitchin!
I've gotta be honest here, everyones always gonn squable over what kind of guitar is the best, as someone who likes Metal & Rock, I prefer Dean, Schecter, jackson guitars.

It doesn't mean everyone else is gonna appreciate those guitars, just in my personal preference, those are my fave's.

Everyones entitled to an opinion, I'm not the biggest fan of LP's or Fenders, I used to own a LP and currently own a Fender I bought when I had been playing for a year cos I had no sense and thought it would be the best decision seeing as all the "Best" or if I'm honest, Famous, players I liked at the time played them.

Because my opinions changed doesn't mean I think those guitars suck.

So people should stop with all the Guitar Brand bashing and concentrate more on the Dean guitar in question.

Which, btw, I tried out in a store and would recommend to anyone, BEAST of a guitar
POSTED: 07/16/2006 02:29pm

Before someone goes off critisizing shred again I must say this:
Why are you making fun of it? Cuz you can shred like that ever? Why dont you stick to your 3 chord progressions and sloppy blues riffs. Shredding is a show of talent if you can shred like Yngwie, Batio, or Pretrucci then you can do anything. You master all of it and speed it up to show off. They could just play slow blues riffs or even slow there solos down a bit but they dont cuz they know hat when they play that fast they are welcomed amoung the elite crew of shredders. It goes the same for professional sports, they guys in soccer dont have to juggle the ball 15 time then spin around to take a shot, they just have to make the shot. but doing that makes it 10 times cooler and more exiting!
POSTED: 07/16/2006 03:25pm

The Dean is an awesome looking and extremely playable guitar.(Period)

I read through most of the posts and had to laugh as it went from being a guitar review to comparing guitarists. I haven't been playing for as long as most of you (2 years with 20 year break between each year), but I have been listening to guitar music for a lot longer than most of you. Obviously the Les Paul has made it's place in history and fits a niche style, but it's not for everyone, that's why the Strat is so popular. I think the same goes for the relatively new Shredder style guitars. If you want to compare the Dean to a Guitar isn't it fairer (more fair)to compare it to one of the Ibanez shredders equipeed with EMGs, or a washburn?
As long as a guitar is well made, and sounds the way you like it to, then it is a good guitar for you. I think the test of a guitar or a guitarist is if in 10 or 15 years anyone even remembers it or they existed. What do Hendrix, Page, EVH, and DImebag have in common?? Absolutely nothing, they all played a different guitar with a different style (although Hendrix did switch to a Gibson at the end)..... Wait, wasn't this about a guitar, oh yeah, we'll see what a 2006 Dean goes for in 20 or 30 years at the vintage Guitar Shop. Anyone want to make a guess??
POSTED: 08/03/2006 10:45am

ok, now its my turn to comment on this "shredder." No disrespect to Dimebag, but shredding is highly over-rated...and I'd say about 90% of you so called "shredders" out there are no more than a copy of Yngwie Malmsteen going up and down the scales. So when you say that Dean is the best...then you have much to learn.
Look, just cause you can't shred doesn't mean you should take it out on the people that can. just stick to being mediocre at guitar and dont annoy us guitarists who like to shred because we can.
POSTED: 08/12/2006 05:57am

if you listen closely to rap music, you can hear them pressing the play button over and over again on a cd player to keep the shitty electric drum beat and any other keyboard sound that was smashed out by some toddler on a kiddies keyboard going. go and get shot in a drive-by, then all your scummy rap friends can write some stupid 'song' (note the inverted commas) with lyrics such as "i love you man" or "you was my brother" and whats with the brackets? are you too stupid to find the "U" on your keyboard? and also, please refrain from using the phrase "suck my big fat hairy black nuts", it only displays your inability to insult someone in an intellectual way and shows that you have some unnatractive problem with pubes which is really unappealing to girls, which is probably why you're wasting your time on a site for people who like real music, because no-one will spare their time to feel you up. which leads me onto another point, why do you have a profile for a site which is for guitar which going to be dominated by err... rock music.

go and listen to some real music and...oh yeah, buy one of those blow-up sex dolls, since it's the only way you'll ever get any action.

Woot! I got this guitar 5 days ago and I'm insanely happy with it. It's very versatile and solid. I don't know if it's heavy cos I'm a big guy and for me it's light as a feather lol in the country I live in this guitar is worth 1200 € and I got it from a cool retailer from 700 € so overall I think I made a great deal but even if I had payed more I would be happy the same! Dime4ever!
POSTED: 10/07/2008 07:31pm

What a bunch of idiotic comments....this guitar, this guitarist. Guys.....come on now. Which is better bolt on neck/set neck/neck through? Ingwie/Satch/Rhoads? Its all bullshit....if you like it and it works for you that is all that matters.
LP's are great...ALOT of metal guys play them, Rhoads/Wilde/etc...Jacksons, Schecters, Ibanez, bla bla bla all make shredder guitars that rock. All make 200$ kiddie toys and all make great guitars that the little 14 year olds only dream about.
To me its not how you play it...but what you make it say....There are fast guys...but who gives a shit if it sounds like 2500 other guys who are that fast. Can you make it scream/sing/whine/give me goose bumps.
Its been said that Yngwie is fast but Clampton says more with 3 notes than he can with 200 notes...
Dimebag could make it tell stories...dark foreboding stories...that what makes him special! Same with Rhoads and others....he made his guitar make you feel things....speed does not do that by itself!
Nice guitar.....God bless
POSTED: 04/28/2009 10:33pm

ok, now its my turn to comment on this "shredder." No disrespect to Dimebag, but shredding is highly over-rated...and I'd say about 90% of you so called "shredders" out there are no more than a copy of Yngwie Malmsteen going up and down the scales. So when you say that Dean is the best...then you have much to learn.

Yngwie Malmsteen is an arrogant prick who loves himself more than all his fans combined, and at least dime's sound was origanal, when malmsteen sounds like every other lightning fast guitarist. and malmsteen is over rated anyway, just cause he plays fast doesn't mean that he's good

** under 900 dollars. i own it, and a razorback, and a RC7X, and that is my dean collection. i also own about a half dozen ibanez guitars, as they are of great value especially for metal, a gibson gothic LP, a charvel, a parker, and a PRS. about your little squabble over whos the best player, whats the best guitar?? ive been a guitar tech for about 10 years, as well as having played in a bunch of bands, playing everything from classic rock, to metal, to harder metal, to black metal, to experimental shit, just about the whole of the metal spectrum, playing as a lead, rhythem and bass guitar player since i started taking lessons in '93, as a wee 6 year old, with a half sized johnson acoustic. all i can say is play it before you buy it... guitar handling can change at the drop of a dime, no pun intended, even on a single guitar. i promise you, i could blindfold probably a third of these posters on this thread, perform set ups on a 67 strat, a 70s LP and any dean, and in the right settings, based on playability, fool you into not knowing which was which. just with string wear, and spring use, you can watch the action on a floyd rose go from a couple mm at the 22nd fret, to like 5 or 6 in a matter of months just by not treating it right, wrong strings, etc. not to mention, you could probably play 2 of the same or similar model guitars, in the same store and they can feel different depending on how they were set up, potential wear, etc. my best advice is to find one, play it on an amp setup similar to your own, and ASK QUESTIONS!!! what kind of warrantee do you offer, do you have any similar products i could try, do you have any similar products you could make a deal on, do you have a demo piece of this model you could make a deal on, do you have one that's not a demo piece?? all of these questions can potentially score you a sweet deal, and have saved me money, and headaches on numerous occasions. i just saved 250 dollars on a brand new rusty cooley RC7X, because i bought the demo piece at the store. same warrantee, same PERFECT condition, and get this: it had the best action out of the 3 at the store, and came with a free hard case. then i asked for a free strap and some picks and, of course got them. and if you walk in there with cash, omg, they'll probably suck your dick right there.. just dont tell them you're planning on buying until you know you want it, and have scored a strap or picks or whatever. salesmen are sneaky and smart, and ALWAYS have a good amount of mark up to play with, like a free/ cheap case if it wasn't included, or whatever. that's the beauty of buying in person, not only can you make sure it's THE guitar you want, but you can negotiate. remember, your axe is your best friend, a partner in a beautiful relationship, and you dont want to half ass something like that. you can always find little deals if you look hard, and it can easily be the piece you were looking for, not just some bright colors waved in your face... hopefully this will help at least one person make a somewhat informed decision when they buy their next piece, or at least put a level of understanding into this arguement of what guitar is the best... PS yngwie is a dick because he's an amazing player and knows he can get away with it, because every neo classical/ metal player wants his nuts. as for shredding supposedly being random note as fast as you can???? that's probably only your opinion because if you played metal that's what it would sound like. i could call acoustic/ clean playing a bunch of open chords and repetitive hooks, but that would be just as ignorant, as just not as fluent with, or moved by that style of playing...
POSTED: 11/10/2009 07:20pm

Look. Guys (and gals if theres any here) this a thread for a REVIEW on the f*****g guitar not some argument over les pauls gibsons etc. Look. Everyone has their favourites makes and models and are entitled to it so just stop squabbling like like kids. Personally I love the deans (own 4 (dean from hell, dimeoflame, razorback explosion and razorback bass)) but I aint gonna go round shitting on all the other makes cos I dont play them or like the look of them.
Anyways, as said, Ive got thia guitar. Had it for nearly a year now. It is soooo good to play. Its fairly weighty and has a great neck. The floyd rose is awesome it hasnt slipped ONCE and the tone is BRILLIANT. You can get the great tone for metal and a mellower tone for a soft soundin riff with the neck pickups. The pickups are great for clean as well. Definately worth it!
Oh yeah. Rocksuckks just go listen to your ****ing, shitty, repetative no brains monkey music and do us all a favour and **** off from a MUSICIANS forum you un-talented piece of shit. Enough said
POSTED: 12/12/2009 08:37pm

to Vrstone87, i agree that shredding is over rated but dime wasnt a shreader, he played fast yeah, he didnt shread because he solo's done all sound the same lol. any1 can learn to play fast but you gotta have soul, just like in floods (the outro is the single greatest peice of music ever composed), this love and suicide not pt 1. and on others he just dicked about with the whammy pedal gotta respect him for that.
R.I.P. dime
p.s. deans are the greatest guitars ever and u can pklay em slow as they sound great clean.
p.p.s. i have the limited run razorback white gold, like matt heafy use to play but he aint the reason i got it... it was dime ofcouse, and cos its amazingly sexy.
POSTED: 02/01/2010 01:26pm

shredding is very over rated no doubt about it guys but you can't deny that dime did more than that, go back to pantera before phil anselmo with terry glaze and more of a blues rock type deal he was the shit then at the front of the 80's dime did magic no matter what genre because these dean guitars can play any genre of music and pull sick tunes and sounds out of it!
POSTED: 02/18/2011 09:23am
