Also neither of those bands use Double Bass Pedals, like Ulrich does in St. Anger.
POSTED: 03/01/2006 02:50pm

This album was terrible, & I don't think people would be so pissed off about it if it didn't take them 6 years to come out with a record. Now everyone stop & don't bother telling me about Garage Days or S&M. Those are not records. I like them both, but I'm talking about new material!! If enough time goes by people are going to disect whatever music they choose to put out. They should put out a record next year to win back some of there fans. I think if they keep putting them off this long & then put out another record for "themselves" (which is what ST Anger was) then I don't see them selling that many of their new albums. When they talk in there interviews that they make music that they want & they don't care about what fans think, I find that kind of stupid. I'm not saying you should just be a puppet & play whatever the fans want, but if you don't do SOMETHING for the fans, then you're not going to have any. Eventually even the die hard fans will stop being faithfull & just remember how cool they used to be. That's what happens when a band gets "washed up".
POSTED: 06/07/2006 12:19pm

St anger was disappointing. It just wasn't as well thought out and melodic, because Metallica's acoustic intros are an important part of their sound. However, the main reason I commented, was to point out how many people say they wouldn't have it stolen - because they don't have it. To those people; Why are you reviewing an album you don't have? You've missed the point, methinks...
POSTED: 06/07/2006 04:01pm

Man i agree completly with the UG Team's review. I didnt think that Metallica was all that bad on this album. They just tried something new and unique and they made something that would tell people to **** off. Sure there is no solos and whatever but in my opinion it still sounds quite good. So STOP FUCKING BASHING IT!
POSTED: 06/07/2006 11:45pm

"Mediocre guitar + "the suck" bass + average drumming + a screaming frontman + keyboard/synth/whatever the f--k that annoying screeching is in the background = bad."
The screeching in the backround is actually the drums. They can do better. I think the reason why SA is bad is beacuse James was in rehab.
POSTED: 06/20/2006 12:16pm

This album is GODDAMNED ELECTRIC

People can't learn to respect the fact that this album, as well as every other album they have made, is a reflection of how they feel at the time. The album has great raw sound but its real heavy too. The lyrics were great... Amazing to see these guys still given it their all at 40... ****in HEAVY.

i hate this album. im not one of those people who try to point out mistakes. if i like then i like it. you know? Kill Em All was excellent. Ride the Lightning was ok. but still good. Master of Puppets, i think, is theyre best one. ...And Justice For All is pretty good. Black Album was good. Load and Reload have exceptions..BUT, when i first heard the songs on St. Anger, i liked them. i thought, "they havent lost theyre touch". but after awhile of listening, they started to get incredibly annoying. especially how James voice goes all over the place. it sounds whiny if you know what i mean. and Kirk lacks talent. i wouldnt mind a solo-less Metallica album at all. IF THEY COULD DO IT RIGHT. he has no good riffs. theyre all too simple. and repeats way too much. and lets face it, lars hits the snare too much. and now that he has that goth-echo sounding snare, it gets so freakin annoying. and since Robert joined the band after the album was made, i cant say much about him. but Bob Rock ruined it. he really did. and also, i agree with jw89. they really need to retire.
POSTED: 07/11/2006 08:38pm

The production value is what disappointed me most, but the reason people are saying it sucks, is because we expect sooo much more from Metallica, and this was such a letdown. Im not sure what u mean by "the real metallica" but, if this isnt metallica then how come ive seen them play these songs live and have a hell of a good time playin them.
This album didn't come out as expected. I do agree it's a total badass album. But what they did in 83 is too far from what they did now. no solos, no sh*t licks, the drums sound like cans, plus theyre bassist is total fu*king assh0le and even a 3 year old kid can finsh some of their songs. But I do understand that they made songs that were not so bad for people who like albums after and before "BLACK"
POSTED: 11/13/2006 07:50pm

And all I hear is 14-year olds complaining about the opinions of those who prefer metallica's older, and IMO, better, material. The album doesn't meet what they know and love Metallica as, and I think the opinions of the people who know what they used to be like are the ones that matter. We buy the albums for metallica, not some mess of a band that became FUBAR after ...AJFA.
POSTED: 11/25/2006 03:03pm

Peooople. This album is brilliant. Stop bitching. I mean, no solos, THAT'S GOOD. They're filling the air with great songwriting, brilliant riffs, and James at his best instead of filling the air with the same old diddly-diddly-scree crap. I'm betting half the people here never even heard the album, but just heard another little moron bitch about it and wanted to go with "The flow". Nobody take the negative reviews seriously, this is one mother****er of an album. Better than self-titled. Which was shit. Other than Sad But True, of course.
POSTED: 12/28/2006 12:20pm

jesus christ. i'm so sick of people whining about there being no solos. so ****ing what ?

Nice, I caught that.

But anyway, for all the lameass whiners who complain about there being no solos, who gives a shit? The solo is not even half of what makes the song. Don't get me wrong, the songs like, One, Master of Puppets, Battery, all have sick solos, and I appreciate that. So do most people. But thats not the point, assclowns. The point is just to make a kick ass song, and see what gives. The solo is just for kicks, more or less. Making a solo is retards work, no thought involved. Two handed tapping, accending and decending, then go up really high, do some bends, add some wah, maybe even some whammy if you feel like it. But to write the actual meat and bones of the song is twice as important. Having a sick solo is like having a massive dong. sure, it'd be NICE, but you don't really need one.

And for any of you who watched the documentary on how they made the album, "Some Kind of Monster", you'd realize that they all said that after the songs were all made and shit, they tried to put in the solos, but they sounded out of place and really shitty.

So basically, you dirty ****ers, who can't get on with your daily ****ing lives without a solo, **** off! Keep on listening to all the old stuff, (which is much better, i'll give you that ) and have a massive shit in your pants when they come out with another album, and when one of the songs has no solo, go crying to your mom, with you 80's "Flock of Seagulls" hairdo, and bitch and complain then. You're just stuck in the ****ing 80's, get over it (well, so am I, but not that much). Metallica will always > you and all your other bands. Get with the program, this is 2007 for ****'s sake! (Happy New Years, btw)
POSTED: 01/04/2007 11:38am

First of all The people who base there like for a band vs. their older stuff are stupid. But thats not why this album isn't that good. Metallica failed to keep the songs interesting enough to make you want to listen to them for 8 minutes. The repeativness makes me want to kill myself. Their older stuff is better because of the somewhat complex arrangments. And finally for the record Jimi Hendrix and Guns N Roses are the two most overrated acts ever, and don't even get close to Metallica.
POSTED: 01/04/2007 09:53pm

Thinking about this album and chatting about it while working has led me to a conclusion which I feel accurately describes this album.

In terms of Metallica's work, this album is a letdown. They have done much better and I still believe they can get back to their more talented works even if they keep this more modern style.

In terms of the whole of mainstream music at the moment, this is a high. In a world where our radio waves echo with nothing but washed out modern rock, hollow pop, and depressing pseudo-punk bullshit this album rocks it all to shit.

(At least that's my opinion)
POSTED: 01/04/2007 09:57pm

I speak for myself when I say that I love everything Metallica has ever recorded. Whether it be Kill'em All or St. Anger to Ramones cover songs to S & M. If anyone is a true Metallica fan they will appreciate the bands versatility a freedom to create whatever music they please.

It doesn't matter what happened with Napster or whether you feel they sold out after AJFA or if St. Anger sucks to you. If you are a diehard Metallica fan like you all preach then show them respect for what they have accomplished. Can you say the same musically for yourself ? I know I can't but at the end of the day after reading these reviews and these comments I know Metallica rocks either way.
POSTED: 01/04/2007 10:42pm

I won't lie to you guys, I can't be bothered to type up a long comment regarding what I think of those who say stupid stuff like "Metallica sold out"... Instead, let me just say this, something that's been said hundreds upon hundreds of times, but some people still fail to realize it: The band is getting old. Their older music was written by younger, admittedly less mature individuals; as they've changed over time, their musical styles have changed with them. Don't just rip on their new stuff because it's different, it's still Metallica.
POSTED: 01/05/2007 02:39am

I can agree with people when they say that Bob Rock Ruined metallica, and honestly, i somewhat agree because when you consider the melodic\trashy\kickass songs, the speed and the hard ass attitude Metallica had before Bob Rock came into the picture, the change is obvious. & So they cut they're hair and suddenly sunglasses became important. But I have nothing BAD to say about metallica because I know that age is beginning to be a factor and that they are in fact experimenting and going new places with their music. ( take James for example, hes still experimenting with his hair )

St Anger, is the album in question. Definitely Some good songs, but in my opinion I found that the songs went from Fast and up beat to an almost sudden stop like in St anger when James starts to sing " St Anger round my neck ". If they would have put less " slow " parts in the songs and Replaced a few of them with solos the album would be Amazing.

In my opinion, is the old metallica better? HELL YES. Am i gonna hate newer metallica because its different? HELL NO. METALLICA OWNS.
POSTED: 01/05/2007 03:16am

Okay so, this song i found, Chains of pain. I really dont know if its metallica or not. I found it on limewire while looking for some of their newer stuff and i found this. " Metallica-New Album-Chains of pain". I honestly have no idea if thats really metallica because if so then James is doing screamo. But I've looked it up and i cant find any artists that sing this song.

I don't care what anyone says...THIS ALBUM ROCKS! Awesome riffs, awesome lyrics, gives you energy. Solos and a snare drum do not make a great album. I love Metallica because they CAN pull off new styles just as well as the last (THAT shows true ability). I don't see what else they could've done to silence the critics calling them 'sellouts' (yet it still happens).

It annoys me how people say that this album sux and that they 'threw it out after just one listen.' This album needs a few listens and I GUARANTEE you will learn to love it!

This band can do no wrong and i'm glad their hardships created this masterpiece. Especially after watching 'Some Kind of Monster' I appreciated this album much more after realising how close we were to never getting it.

One other thing, don't blame Bob Rock. Metallica are big enough to not need to succumb to what the producer wants. Besides, even if it is Bob Rock's "fault", that means he got them on a new creative path that in my opinion truly showcases their diversity.
POSTED: 01/28/2007 11:12am

Dude you are insane. I would like you to right now put on "The Thing That Should Not Be" and sing along. His range and control is overlooked because of his unusual tone and vocal distortion style. Hetfield sings his ASS off on Master of Puppets and sounds incredible. He doesn't sound so hot now but don't tell me could never sing!

lol. There really is something to be said for coherence. If you think Metallica is the best band out there, you really haven't heard much; and if you think that mass consumption is a sign of quality, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. Au Contraire, there is plenty of reason to say "bullsh*t" about Metallica, just too little time to say it all.
POSTED: 05/30/2007 10:08pm

its really annoying when people go around dissing the black album by saying they made it too please people and saying that they should be themselves...then when metallica actually does do just that...they give them complete shit. personally i love this album. i admit its nowhere near their best, but reload was way worse than that. atleast i can listen to this whole album. and i also want to add, that this album has a lot of traits showing that metallica is returning to the thrash metal band we love. if you pay close attention you hear the double bass. in the song 'all within my hands' [which is a really good song about jason for all those who care], you find thats its filled with riffs like master of puppets. but anyway id give this album a 7. dont like it? well its my opinion. you dont have to buy it. you dont have to listen to it. so dont go around trashing all of us who do like it. end rant
POSTED: 07/07/2007 05:18am

MetallicA is my life. I love everything on it. True metal bands experiments with their sounds, exploring their talents. There's nothing bad about the new sound, its just different. ok? maybe ure just jealous on Metallica, u guys were taking advantage of their difference, harsh words had been thrown to them. If they go back to their old school roots, promise, you will all Kneel to them. Look at other metal bands, they are really afraid to change sound, because they are just limited, sticked their butts to metal only. and some people are getting tired listening to them.

they are still the greatest metal band. but they are just having fun right now. Metallica is the only different metal band. thats what makes them great.
POSTED: 07/09/2007 12:29pm

I always imagined metal to be brutal, to get to the point, to not waste half a minute with a bit of an ego-fest. But hey, that's just me. I really liked the production of it, that whole 'bare-bones' feel of it, added something. Kinda like improving the club by adding a sodding great Apike through it as opposed to polishing it till it's nice & Shiny.
POSTED: 11/01/2007 08:54am

I think this is the worst album Metallica put out, and i dont think they oculd get worse from here.Everyone says that old metallica fans are ignorant to change.N, change is ok, but when that change turns one of your favorite bands from Straigh tup thrash to Straight up trash, your gonna get angry. If this album is meant to make the lstener angry, t does a veeery good job, cuz when i finished listening to it, i felt likt killing somehting, and not in a good way.New Metallica sucks, plain and ****ing simple

Goddamnit, I'm tired of hearing people say that "St. Anger is the most brutal Metallica album yet" and shit like that. St. Anger was terrible. I used to be a dire hard fan until I heard this shit. Now I can't even listen to Metallica, I've lost all respect for them. What the hell happened to James's voice? I never thought he was that great of a singer, but in songs like "Shoot me Again" and "Purify", the vocals are painful to listen to. Also, Kirk sounds worse than a beginner guitarist trying to play "Smoke on the Water" for the first time. And lets not even talk about the drums... All these fags are trying to defend this album when it straight up blows! Metallica's dead, let the dream die. Listen to some death or black metal and you'll discover what "brutal" sounds like, cause it's certainly not St. Anger.
POSTED: 02/27/2008 07:59pm

What a bunch of lameass fans Metallica have to suffer! So they've put out albums that arent "(insert fav. album here)" in quality, do you all really want and expect the same album every single time??

Another small detail you might want to reconsider before spewing your ringer is the situation the band was in at the time of St.Anger. They were so ****ed! Look at "some kind of monster". Hardly a band thats stable. They go from "what ****in' intamacy??" to group hugs!

Im going to stick my neck out and say that the next album will piss all over "St.Anger", will have all you fakes scrambling to say "oh, i knew they'd come round eventually" and if im wrong so what? I'll still love this band. The ammount of postive things Metallica has given us compared to the negative is massive. If anyone in this columm can say that Metallica's music hasnt in some way brightend up their lives then what are you doing here? Just dissing a band you dont like? Get a life.
Perhaps I'm sounding stupid since I didn't have a computer until September 13, 2001 BUT id anyone take notice at how big downloading via napster, bitlord, kazaa, limewire and stuff became big and even done AFTER Metallica opened their big mouths over one hit single? Maybe I'm being stupid but that pretty much helped open the gates of destruction of making a living in the music industry, let alone floodgates to people downloading torrents and torrent-loads of discographies, dvd movies and even video games. In a nutshell, they helped in making the music business that much harder to work in.
POSTED: 05/08/2008 01:21am

I think you're mistaking their new exercise in pro-tooled backpeddling for their old material (which I can only assume you haven't heard). Listen to Hit the Lights and tell me what that fire in Hetfield's voice is if not pure passion. No, the difference is that back in the day they had talent and songwriting ability, and now they've lost both those things quite completely.

Also, don't be a dick and bring Cliff into this. You are in no position to state a dead man's opinion for him, and to be fair, neither are any of the detractors who try and use him to support themselves. You obviously need to work on your "open-mindedness" though, since you don't seem able to appreciate the fact that just because some people won't gobble up every turd thrown to them, doesn't mean they can't be open-minded.
POSTED: 10/24/2008 12:10am

To all you people saying stuff like "There are only so many riffs that you can do in standard tuning" and "They've been writing songs for like 40 years, of course their lyrics aren't going to be as good" as excuses for why this album uses a different tuning and has really bad lyrics, Death Magnetic still had some kickass standard riffs, and the lyrics were a definite improvement from anything they made in the 90's up to the point where the album was released. These excuses are not valid.

Yes, this album was raw and passionate. But it could've been raw and passionate with actual good songs and lyrics. Going for a raw sound isn't an excuse to make crap songs.

This album thoroughly annoyed me... the snare, the lack of solos (which usually wouldn't be a big deal... but this is Metallica!), I don't really mind the production quality, but the lyrics were definitely lacking (in fact, the lyrics were what annoyed me most. "Fuck it all and no regrets, I hit the lights on these dark sets"... does that sound familiar to anyone? Damage Inc. maybe? Or, perhaps, Hit the Lights?). The only thing that I can think of that I enjoyed was Hetfield's passionate vocals.

And yes, I agree with Nightstrider. Leave Cliff out of this. Nobody gets to decide what his opinion is. I know he can't tell us what his opinion is, but that doesn't mean that everyone else gets to decide for him.
POSTED: 11/13/2008 09:04pm

Well the thing is that the bass is played by Bob Rock. Trujillo came right after the recording of this album. It has his own qualities, but they are not Metallica's qualities. For example, if Metallica said: Ok we are going to do something different. We'll call this project St.Anger or whatever. Then things would change... But the album was too forced, over-produced, it is almost artificial. It's so much easier to listen this album as NON-Metallica record.
POSTED: 11/18/2008 05:19am

However much people bitch about whether St Anger is good or not, it still so interesting to see the such divided opinions on. This is purely because the album is always in people consciousness, it has become an unique slice in time perhaps even unique part in rock history. Even though people try to forget about it, escape it, not play it it will always pop up every nowandthen, like in articles like this, that it is always there lurking in the background.

For an album that most people think is crap, or wont admit to owning or even acknowledge an existence of, that pretty impressive.
POSTED: 11/18/2008 08:06am

The album was not 'crap' or 'awful' like most people say it is yes compare it to thier 80s wok and it is not as good but they did a fairly good job on this I would not say this album is near 'great' but it is better than some albums artists make today but I hate it when people say stuff like 'yeah metallica is not good anymore they not like old metallica' WELL OF COURSE THEY GOT OLDER AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE METALLICA! and most people who say 'they have not made a good album in 22 years..' to me they are as much as fanboys as they ones who adore st.anger when are people going to relize that they are not going to go back to the 80s? enjoy the music they make now! and why do people just hate DM just cause of st.anger really DM was not that bad it was a one of their best albums since black so mabey it is your picky taste in music not the album now, I agree guitar solos and a REAL BASS PLAYER would have been nice and some better lyrics would have made this album better but saying metallica 'lost it' because of this album makes you sound stupid it was one album! and I hate people who always say "Metallica vs Megadeth" seriously Dave is not mad at them anymore and one should you choose between them?! also it is one thing to say metallica sucks but to say they have done nothing to contribute to metal is out of the question they are still overall one of the best metal bands ever
POSTED: 11/18/2008 06:31pm

freedomdeceptiv, you're a fool. Metallica have been terrible for 20 years and St. Anger is the laughing stock of the music industry.

Heres a fact for everyone - 90% of Metallica fans refuse to believe that the band can do any wron. Most people's reply to that is 'You're just saying that because you like Megadeth'. Yeah, I like Megadeth - I also like Kreator, Exumer, Sodom, Coroner, Onslaught, Exodus and Heathen. Just because I like Megadeth doesn't mean I don't like Metallica too, but in all honesty they only have two truely great albums (RtL and AJFA). Metallica fanboys need to pull their heads away from Metallica's collective penis and smell the coffee already.
POSTED: 11/18/2008 07:31pm

I'm sick of people saying two things:

Firstly, there's the people who say, "True Metallica fans should still like Metallica no matter what type of music they make". This is total crap. So if I want to consider myself a true Metallica fan, am I supposed to like every single album they make, even if they (god forbid) decide to make a freaking britney spears style pop album? Think about what you're saying. If a band changes it's style too far away from the style that their fans love, well that's reason enough for their fans to not like one of their albums. I'm not saying that a band doesn't have a right to change their style, but if they do, their fans are free to stop liking them, and should be able to do so without you *******s judging them for not being true fans.

Secondly, there's the people who say that this is the greatest metallica record alongside MoP, or just behind MoP. I assure you, half of these people don't like MoP that much, otherwise they'd probably put St. Anger behind their other classics like AJFA and RtL. They just want to try to avoid being flames, and know that MoP is considered to be Metallica's greatest album by so many people. Imo, if you like St. Anger:
1. I don't understand how you can actually like this album, but
2. At least grow some balls and admit that you like it more than Metallica's classics. In my eyes, doing this is more respectful than hiding behind popular opinions to sheild yourself from flaming.
POSTED: 11/20/2008 08:55pm

lol you clearly don't "love" everything that metallica has done.

I agree that the black album got boring. It's very unimpressive when compared to the albums that came before it.

I like a few songs off Load... but overall I didn't like it that much at all. Same deal with Reload, except Load was marginably better.

There's only one song that I'll admit is actually pretty good on St. Anger, and that's Sweet Amber. Imho, by far the best song on the album. Everything about it is so intense. But it would've been twice as sweet with one of Kirk's infamous wah abusing solo's.

RIP cliff indeed. Originality, creativity and talent, he had it all.
POSTED: 11/23/2008 06:21am

If it's one thing I have learnt over the years is that fans of any particular genre of music will not understand and appreciate or like other genre's..... of course it is wrong for me to generalise for there are exceptions but i can't get it why some hardcore trash metal fans dont understand anything other than trash metal... same way some pop fans think rock, metal grunge etc is noise and some fans of western classical composers like mozart or beethoven say that metal and rock etc is a blight on the earth....

Music is Music no matter what it is and its up to no one to say wat is good or bad since music is not based on science or ethics so there is not "right or wrong".....

Opinions are welcome but they hav to hav some ground they should not just be,"This album sucks" or even,"this album is great" they should widen up on it more.....

for my personal opinion i thought st. anger was not a great performance..... from some other band it wud have been ok but from metallica, the kings of metal,it was mediocre... still it is worth anyones time....

is my review merely "a teenager ranting on how crap this album is"? Go look at it. I don't mean to be proud, but it's more than just hating on the album for stupid reasons.

Anyway, screaming =/= talent as a vocalist. imo, I don't mind his voice... but if your only argument to how good his voice is "omg he can scream! lolwut!", it's a pretty damn weak argument.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: People who hate this album are still true metallica fans. When a band changes their style a lot, people can stop liking that style while still liking the older style that they used to have. A lot of people don't like their ears to bleed whenever they put on an album from their favourite band, which is why a lot of metallica fans don't like this album.

btw the lyrics suck. It doesn't matter whether you know what they were going through or not, they were incredibly weak. The lyrics you just posted, "wash your back so you won't stab mine", is quite possibly the best lyrics on the album, and it's not even that clever. Very under metallica's usual standard. Epic lyrics would be stuff like "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Check out those rhyming patterns in that song... it's epic. "Take a look to the sky just before you adie, it's the last time you will! Blackened roar, massive roar fills the crumbling sky, shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry". That is what you call awesome lyrics.
POSTED: 02/01/2009 02:16am

i totaly agree with u when u say that the lyrics and the album itself isnt the best of metallica, anyone would say that..and i agree, for whoms lyrics is in my opinion one of hetfields shining efforts in lyrics.but i do disagree that the lyrics suck. ther not that bad at all.. everyone writes lyrics based on there feelings n stuff, and at that time, they probably felt that those wer the best lyrics they could come up with.. even know ther not the best, you still gota give them a pat on the back for it, i dont even know why your hatin on them, id like to u see you try n become as big as metallica or any band, i dont think anyone should be talkin shit about any band and there lyrics n music if they cant do better.. if you can, then be my guest.
POSTED: 03/05/2009 07:27pm

I would Have to agree with you there, But lets look at this as a metal album, not a metallica album, it has awesome sounding riffs, the drums are almost perfect, they compliment the vocals and guitar perfectly, James's voice isn't the best, not exactly The black album or master of puppets (my personal faves)and the lyrics do kinda suck, but hey, i would say go and buy this if u want a pretty good metal album, but if ur looking for heavy fast paced metallica don't bother too much with this album. overall I'd say it's pretty good, some bad points and some good points, 7/10
POSTED: 03/19/2009 05:07pm

Iam a fan of metallica and to me the more people that critize St.Anger the more I like it. Yes St.Anger is the worst thing Metallica every made but i is also a different path for metallica which of course is heading down a bad road, but i have to say that i didn't hate every song on St.Anger, i actual listen to couple of the song off St.Anger in my Car because the sound from St.anger and my cars huge speakers make the St.Anger sound kick your a$$. I know that alot of people critize the St.Anger album i dont blame you, but it isn't like its so garbage that you have to critize it every time you hear a song off the album. To me Metallica will always be considered one of the best thrash metal bands of all time, along with Slayer, and of course Pantera.
POSTED: 06/07/2009 02:15pm

Every one on this site critizes St.Anger because Every one wants to be like Eveyone, and its stupid one person says I hate St.Anger, and more people start saying it, its bullshit. I wont follow down that path because some songs on St.Anger kick A$$. But thats my thoughts, not everybody elses. Metallica never made music for the people, Show me a song from Metallica whats made for the fans, no their music is about four musicians and their feeling, lifestyle, problems. St. Anger the darkest part of Metallica and the whole album shows how did they lived in the past and the struggles in the band, for example losing bassist Jason Newsted... what do you expect from a Downey guy who suffer form depression and alcoholism at this time, from a soloist who had drugged half of his brain and from a drummmer who hating his band, mainly the band's frontman.
Some kinda helped cause the people writing didnt sound totaly biased, I havent heard it yet and am debating weather to buy or not so...
buy it!!!! i bought it when it came out. lost the cd and had to download it because i loved it so much. it is probably one of my favorite metallica albums for the simple fact that it is just raw and heavy. i've listened to every metallica song a few times. i love them all because they are different aspects of the same band. everyone loves led zeppelin but forgets that they were partly a country band. if you listened to all of their stuff. As for the "drums being annoying" ya theyre supposed to sound like that. the entire band didnt want a perfect sound. they took as few takes as possible and some of the being first takes.
POSTED: 11/29/2009 01:47am

I don't think he uses a steel snare, maybe wood but that wouldnt make the snare sound like this. They didnt screw up the snare or anything they just turned it off like how alot of bands do. I think its just the mixing thats bad and the snare sound louder. Listen to children of bodom, they have their snare turned off but they don't get flamed. It's just that the mixing is bad, the music however is brilliant.
POSTED: 12/24/2009 09:52am

sound quality: it sound like it was recorded in a tunnel. i know it was recorded at an old military base, but they couldve used better equipment to fix that.

NO SOLOS: wtf is tht? no solos from metallica? thats a sin against nature. they are way to skilled to just skip out on solos. frantic would be alot better if it had a guitar solo. same with st. anger.

I started listening to Metallica in the Justice days and became a huge fan. They're one of the reasons I started playing guitar. I liked the Black album well enough, but still preferred the older stuff. My musical interests drifted away from Metallica during the Load/ReLoad years and I never even bought those albums until much later.

I bought St. Anger the day it came out and was pissed off by the time I got halfway through it. I chucked it on the shelf and didn't listen to it anymore.

Death Magnetic came out and rekindled my interest in my old favorite band. It quickly became my favorite Metallica album, surpassing even Justice and Puppets.

Last week, I decided to listen to St. Anger again. I have no idea why... I just saw it there on my playlist and hit it. I was blown away by how badass it was. Maybe it's because Magnetic gave me that old-school fix I needed, but I was finally able to appreciate the balls-to-the-wall ass-kicking this album delivers.

Before you flame me, I totally understand why some people hate the album. It's okay to hate it. But if you haven't listened to it since it came out... give it another shot. Your tastes may have changed. I know mine did!
POSTED: 06/03/2010 06:43am

I recently watched Some Kind of Monster and it gives you a different view on Metallica, in a way i feel bad for them and in ways i do not.

It kind of made them seem human for once, in general for me my favorite muscians seem more than that, mostly because i have no personal connection with them.

It is probably a nice life having all the money, but it seems to have taken a toll on all of them and I can understand why St. Anger sounded so different.

They were going through a turbulant time in their lives and careers, and I know they are fine now but had i watched this upon its release i would have thought they were going to break up.

As for no solos Kirk even comments how he doesn't like it not because he doesn't get to shine, but because it makes it something that metallica isn't. And if anyone does not realize it both James and Kirk play solos, Kirk just plays more because he is the lead guitarist.

I still can comprehend why people use the stupid Wah pedal argument, its a signature sound he doesn't use it all the time and he plays solos that sound good. Thats why i think he is good, often times a lot is lost with speed and he can incorporate both.

I'm not saying he is the best guitarist ever but claiming who is best is just a stupid argument, because no one really is the best as everyone has different opinions. I have guitarists I like and ones I don't but the ones I do not like I don't believe to suck, i just dont like listning to them, its taste.

Anyway, I think this album got a lot of uneeded hate, I used to harp on it until i really listned to it for a second time and got the story straight. It changed my opinions on a lot of them, for the better in some cases.

I think everyone is extremely polar in their opinions but maybe thats the way the internet is. Everyone seems so content on hating everything, I honestly do not know how some people havn't died from soo much anger. I don't like some music, but I try hard not to go bash it, its a hard thing to understand why some people may like it and you don't i struggle with it, but in the end am much happier.

Of course I also don't believe most of the people who hate to have sat through all the tracks and went through 'supposed torture'. Usually if I don't like a track I just change it, problem solved and move on.

But anyway its all my opinion and people are entitled to hate and criticize how they please, just my view on things.
POSTED: 01/12/2011 08:47pm

That's so true what you said. People hate the album because they want to hate it. It's easier to hate music that you really like than like music that you really hate. But if you have an open mind and don't think that "this is Metallica and if it's not as good album as Master of Puppets, it sucks." I haven't really listened to this album. I have heard some tracks, not really a fan of them but I still respect Metallica. And some people hate Load and Reload. I have heard some songs and I have liked them. They may not sound like Metallica but they are good songs. It's a good thing that Metallica can change their style unlike Slayer for example. All their songs sound the same and they have not changed their style (that's not a bad thing but it's great that some bands can change their style and still make good music). I think good musicians should respect every artist even if they hated their music (and by respect I mean that if you don't like it, don't comment that "Justin Bieber sucks," just don't listen if you don't like). Not everybody has the same music taste as you do. There's no such thing as "good music" or "bad music," it depends on who's listening to the music.

And about Kirk: He has very recognizable style so that's a good thing. Even though he over uses some licks and wah pedal, he still has his signature style that some guitarists don't have. And isn't it a good thing when you hear the first note of the song or solo and can tell that this is Metallica or Kirk Hammett? It means that the band has their own style. And I have started to respect all the guitarists that play in a band. I have noticed how good they really are. People bash Kirk Hammett but I think he's much better than almost anybody here in UG. If you have played in a band, you'll notice the same things as I have.
POSTED: 05/11/2012 03:48pm

Uch, this old chestnut.

As a stand alone album it's quite good. Drum sound is annoying, some tracks ar too long and repetive a la Invisible Kid, but still have great riffs.

No solos...could have done with some Hammett here there and everywhere - perhaps then some songs would not seem so tiresome or repetive then?

Overall, not half as bad as what every narrow-minded 'old-skool' fans say it is, a real good album to listen to if you're angry and full of some very good riffs.

For reference, if you thought this was shit - check out Lulu!! This album seems like Master Of Puppets compared to that!!
POSTED: 05/16/2012 06:49am

To be honest, I enjoy this album. For sure, this is not Metallica's finest moment, and if I would point anything negative here (beyond Lars' snare, of course) is that the songs are a little repetitive. Otherwise, I dig the raw production sound here and doing justice to the album's name, there is some angry shit here, like "Some Kind of Monster" and "Dirty Window". It is not a bad album at all, it's just kinda different and that's enough for 60% of the fanboys/thrash metal wannabes to give this a ton of crap.
POSTED: 05/16/2012 08:01am

Bingo.

Anyway, not much of a fan of this album, decided to read some reviews since it was on the front page.

I do like the 'heaviness' of the album though, they got that right. Hetfield also has some pretty bad ass vocal parts in the album.
It IS a very repetitive album though. Sure the songs are long but that's mostly down to parts being too long or being repeated too many times.
Lars's drums...We all know the opinion the sound quality. It's a shame he didn't change his sound aswell for this album since they where pretty much experimenting. This was his time to shine. He is a REALLY good drummer, he just doesn't show his potential in songs, possibly because he drums what FIT'S Metallica songs perfectly instead of what is technically amazing but it is a real shame that he is the member that does get 'trash talked' about the most for lack of skill, when he does actually have alot of it.

The lack of solo's is another shot in the foot for this album. Solo's aren't everything, sure but one of the reasons I love Metallica is because I love Kirk's Solo's. He is my hero and I have looked at him as a God since I was 4 years old. Sure he isn't the best guitarist ever, I can name many better but best =/= favourite. It was saddening for him not to be able to do his thing in this album.
It's even more saddening to hear the reason is "solo's aren't cool any more, other bands these days don't do solo's"...Damn sell outs D:

Overall though, yes, this was a total 'sell out' album and they should be ashamed for the reason's of why things in this album happened (Mo' money) but it's still a half decent album and has alot of good quality's about it.
POSTED: 05/16/2012 11:59am

Love this album. Its so badass. People call it a "sell out" album, but its anything but. Definitely the heaviest album since "justice". Driving riffs, pounding drums. Lars makes his presence known on every track. Never heard an album that sounds like this. For the People who claim its nu-metal, I dare you to try and find one limp bizkit song that even slightly resembles any song on St. Anger. I highly recommend.
POSTED: 05/16/2012 12:06pm

You don't need to hate the album. Disliking and hating is two different things. And you don't need to bash Metallica. Some people like this album. My point is that we should respect what bands do. I'm not saying that you should like all the music but you should respect every artist, even though you don't like them (and by respect I mean that you don't talk sh!t about them: If you don't like, don't listen to it).
POSTED: 05/16/2012 12:34pm

Can anyone actually say with a straight face that if this album was put out by some unknown band that it actually would have seen the light of day? I'd say no, its really for the die-hard fans only. It really seemed like a half-assed attempt at nu metal.

Seriously, this and Lulu are painful to listen to. I might even say that Lulu is better, at least when Lou stops singing/talking the background music isn't bad.

Load and Reload aren't particularly good either (liked them when they came out, but interest waned as years went by, except for a few songs), but at least they're only mediocre.
POSTED: 05/16/2012 06:24pm

i like a lot of the riffs on this album, but only from a fiff by riff basis, musically as a whole im with the majority, its pretty below average, at least they themselves admitted it, st anger strike 1, death magnetic over produced strike 2, lulu well thats strike 3 in my book, its not like ive expected metallica to stay 21 years of age, hell, i even rate load and reload, and garage inc, but lets be honest, the last good thing they did was no leaf clover and -human
POSTED: 05/16/2012 08:37pm

This is not as bad as people claim it to be...
Just listen to it with an open mind.
Also, it's Bob Rock playing bass here, not Robert Trujillo...
POSTED: 08/20/2012 08:24am
