ever since i have seen Muhammed Suicmez using one, i was instantly hooked as to it reliability and tone. Unfortunately, as much as i love the body shape, my style of playing would not always revolve around the "metalish" look it portrays, but don't put it past me picking one of these up
POSTED: 07/09/2007 12:07pm

Absolutely Amazing guitar. I just bought it recently and it's waaay batter than I had imagined. It looks awesome but plays even better. The Dimarzios have great sound, the neck plays like butter and the actions is so low, that the strings are basically touching the frets, but there's no buzz. Very comfortable to sit and play with as well as stand. It's all around a great buy. I recommend it.
POSTED: 07/09/2007 01:03pm

Actually, I hear that you can't put a Floyd in the place of an Ibanez trem. I would look into the matter more and probably get an Ibanez Edge Pro, the same trem on the Jem and JS guitars.
POSTED: 07/09/2007 03:09pm

Wrong, the Edge III is a direct swap for an OFR. One Way Ticket (a member on the forums) did so.
POSTED: 07/09/2007 04:59pm

i do really enjoy these. Ibanez really outdid themselves with this design. I'll take it over a DB MX or a Jackson Warrior anyday. If you want an X-shaped guitar, look for this one. Plus, it's easy on your ribs when you sit down for a very long time!
POSTED: 07/09/2007 11:52pm

if you don't like the edge iii, put in an edge ii pro in it. i just did routing for an edge ii in my rg350dx, and i'm quite happy with it. i don't like the ofr's for some reason, so i'd recommend finding an edge ii on ebay. it'll probably be cheaper anyway.
at least they aren't putting a lo-trs on it.
POSTED: 07/10/2007 12:55am

Not muddy at all. Simply, a total in-your-face metal guitar.
When correctly set up, the Edge III isn't that bad (nor very good, either). But the rest of features make it absolutely worth.
I'd like Ibanez to release a Japanese made model next year, with the Edge Pro and in Suede Black colour... then they'll have made the perfect metal guitar! lol
POSTED: 07/26/2007 04:56pm

Depends on where you get it, retail your prob looking at 800-1000$ CDN before tax, if you can find a place in the states that'll ship it you can get it for 500-700$ Cdn, but i think they'rd be duty on that depending on how you had it shipped

Just bought this guitar about 1 week ago.. Best purchase i have ever made. there are canadians here lookin for a price and calgary canada at axe music i paid about 850.00 which to me was a great price compared to other axes in its class, its my first time with a tremlo and its stressin me out but its commin together just fine i still need my first set up done but right from factory im still impressed the action is a little high for me. I play mostly metal, on a hartke piggy back half stack( the price was right since i dont go on stage) but the tone is orgasmic. clean or distorted you wont be disapointed... the strap positioning to me is terrible, dives like a bastard but that will be fixed soon and easily.... all and all i would recommend this axe to all users of begginer or professional status!
POSTED: 06/05/2008 02:01pm

Im sellin my xiphos, gonna get a prestige 7 string instead, i regret buying it tbh, the edge is abosolute bollocks, last time i ever buy a guitar with a crap tremelo,if you dont use it, it stays in tune alright, if DO you use it, goes out of tune quite often, one thing i do like is the neck and the pickups, low end of the pickups aint bad, prefer my emgs but the highs are very nice, you can hear each note perfectly, i prefer the highs on these D-act...compared to my emgs.
if u are thinking of buying this guitar keep in mind the floyd is abosloute crap so i suggest u block/dont use it/put in a better one, apart from thats its an ok medium level guitar
POSTED: 10/29/2008 11:48am

I admit the tremelo isnt even nearly as good as an OFR, but actually its not THAT bad either.... you have to give it some time for the springs to stretch and set in. Once set, give it a serious bridge setup depending on the tuning u use [In my case, as i always play in d or 1-step-down tuning and use extra light gauge strings, i had to take of one of the three tremelo springs and leave only two to do the job.] It took me whole two days to level the bridge and get the perfect tuning at the same time.... but u can expect to do these sort of little sacrifices for the price u're getting this thing for. It's been about three months since i last had to tune my guitar, only the fine tuners to correct any minor slack-off. U shudn't hav any problem doing any 'basic' tremelo stuff with it.....
POSTED: 11/14/2008 02:58pm

I brought one of these a year ago and i still love it. the only problems i had with it were the obvious neck diving thing, but thats easily sorted by adjusting the position of the strap buttons. Also the edge 3 is abit too fragile for my liking, it takes so long to get in tune when replacing strings, but once in tune, it stays in tune. Overall though, a great guitar, the dimazios sound great through my randall rg75
POSTED: 02/23/2009 09:40pm

thats exactly what they are saying, and they nailed it. MrSir4 is right, with some work it can be an acceptable guitar, but at the same time you shouldnt have to spend anything beyond a setup to make a 1000+ guitar playable. The root of the problems with this guitar is the quality of workmanship(put it side by side with a Korean or Jap IBZ, you'll see), although the D-activators dont help at all. The D-activators were a good idea, but Dimarzio missed the mark with the sound. I never had a problem with setting up the tremlo, but the action was always terrible, even with a perfectly straight neck, and without moving the strap button, its a pain in the ass to play. Long story short, I had mine for less than a month before I sold it and went back to my korean made RGT w/emgs.
POSTED: 10/25/2010 11:12am

after playing it for a few months ive come to think it sounds a little thin compared to my schecter synyster custom, probably because it's half the weight. i tend to turn the mid up a bit on my amp which helps, but i'm still a little disappointed as its tone doesn't match its awesome playability and feel. still great value for money though, but i'd say 7/10 is more accurate than 10/10...
POSTED: 04/12/2011 11:47pm

Well, it depends if you're a player that relies upon playing or someone interested about the looks. An S 470 is superior in any respect to X Series (all of them, made in Indonesia, btw). I don't think you can get something better by modding these guitars, the shape and the bolt-on construction altogether don't allow a good sustain. And wood is Basswood, if I'm not wrong. Not a good starting point for building a competitive weapon. You better go upwards, toward RG Series, there are some fantastic Metal axes there.
POSTED: 10/10/2011 06:56pm

The six string Xiphos are solid guitars, I've played them before, you can feel the quality. The seven string Xiphos however still need some work, the seven strings I tried felt like toys, that was a couple years ago, dunno how quality has changed on the ERG since then.
Have you tried the late 70's & early 80's X series guitars? The basswood on those Made in Japan x series guitars are breathtaking, first time I ever liked basswood, badass guitars, dude. This is my humble opinion, but If you're gonna get an S Series, go Prestige, otherwise I wouldn't invest in an S, same with RG.

Personally I don't buy any Ibanez unless it's Made in Japan, the Korean & Indonesian guitars are hit & miss. Kinda like buying an American Strat vs a Mexican Strat, if you got the cash, go American.
POSTED: 11/15/2011 01:17pm

Lots of funny comments here. I've had a black one since 2008.

Nowdays they have several Xiphos models including ones with bolt on necks, some with cheap pups, some with cheap wood, and some with hard tails. Those have different model numbers.

But mine is an XPT700, like the reviews here are supposed to cover. It's made in Indonesia with the Edge III, and it's made of mahogany, not basswood.

Nothing wrong with the Edge III if you know how to set up and handle a Floyd. I also have a Prestige and a Schecter with an LFR and have no problems with any of these trems. It doesn't matter that the locking nut makes it take longer to tune because the only time I ever have to tune it is while changing the strings. As long as I stretch the strings properly, it stays literally perfectly in tune until the next string change, regardless of how much whammy abuse it gets. If the temperature changes, then it needs a slight claw adjustment, but that's all.

I did have to use shorter claw screws to get enough spring tension with Ernie Ball Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom strings. Ibanez designs this and most of their guitars for 9s (according to their literature).

If you want the Edge III to last, then don't adjust the action while the strings are under tension--that kills the knife edges, and isn't good for any 2-post style locking trem where you adjust the action with the posts. Mine's still going strong after 3 years + a year on the wall at the guitar store.

It's just as good as my MIJ Prestige in almost every way--I only have 2 disappointments:

- The cosmo black finish wears off the hardware almost immediately
- The neck dives and I haven't found alternate mounting points that fix that yet

My Schecter is a Standard Avenger, but I have a real SH-8 in the bridge and a Sustainiac in the neck. And I've played about half a dozen Syn Customs in stores. Yeah, the ebony fretboards are nice, and the fret access is a tiny bit better than the Standard, but with the same pups there isn't much difference. All I can say is if the Xiphos didn't equal the Syn, then either it wasn't an XPT700, or it was a really f-ed up one. The only reason I use my Avenger more than my Xiphos is the neck-diving issue.
Almost every one you attach is a different guitar than is being reviewed. The review is for a XPT700 24 fret guitar and you attach a vid for a 27 fret XPT700XHGSF.
POSTED: 12/11/2012 08:28am
