Okay people, this not a tube Marshall, it's a practice amp. That being said, I now have collected 4 of them which I run at home which is loud enough. They even drown out my brother 30watt tube Vox amp. With the appropriate pedals, these sound awesome! I love my wee little Marshalls!
POSTED: 11/08/2006 06:22pm

This amp is sp bad it's unbelievable. The n00bness here is almost unbearable. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, TRY A REAL AMP! The clean sounds are horrid and really tinny, or if you roll back the guitar volume and the treble, you end up with a very thin muddy sound. And the distortion sounds like a cigar case full of wasps, horrible attempt at overdrive. Even for a solid-state practise amp, this is right at the bottom of the pile. I can't believe some people paid so much for this.
POSTED: 05/15/2007 11:09am

Then you have obviously never seen a real amp. Ever been to a gig? Did they have 10watt solid-state Marshalls onstage with them?
POSTED: 05/16/2007 12:06pm

a wall of marshalls is only good for a music video my first amp was a peavey blazer 158 (15 amps and much louder, i never had it up full for practices) for around £80 and it was much much much better than my friends mg10cd. i was recently going to buy an mg100dx thinking maybe the bigger model would be better, but after being advised buy pretty much everyone not to buy one and tried it out. just a louder piece of sh!t. MG's are bad amps. yes it can get "any" tone you want, you just don't realise how bad that tone is until you play something atleast half decent. go to a shop play a marshall mg then play any other amp in the same price range. you'll see
POSTED: 07/10/2007 01:24pm

I use one of these to practice at home and it does the job fine. Yes, you'd have to be stupid to gig it, but it's very good for the money.

Just for the record, if you are a 12 year old who wants to become a guitar player in a band...this is not the amp for you...eventually you will have to get a bigger amp...so dont go for this if you are wanting to become a serious guitar player, get a 50 watt solid state at least...it will be worth it in the long run.

THis amp in itself does have good power, but its for someone who practices like..30 minutes a week..if youre more serious than that, get something bigger.
POSTED: 12/21/2007 03:16pm

Does what it says on the tin (or box). It's good value for the half arsed guitarist, but I have to say it's rather crap and I have real reasons! 1) It blew up, TWICE (smoked the first time, good if you wanna save money on stage effects, just blow up one of these) 2) It constantly picks up radio one..... Apart from that what you expect for, like a few tenners?
POSTED: 06/12/2008 03:31pm

It could be worse. I started playing about ten years ago and my first amp was a johnson standard10, talk about a piece of sh*t. All you got was Vol, Master Vol, Treb and Bass. If you wanted any distortion on it you had to do the vintage-manual procedure and turn the thing all the way up to get any distortion at all (which even when you got there) there wasnt any. The sad part is i paid the same amount for this as a Marshall MG10, the johnson was worth about 25 dollars. I wish i had this when i started. Eventually it would have died out though. But soonly i got a triple rec with a marshall 1960 cab and im in love
POSTED: 06/26/2008 01:05pm

Then you have obviously never seen a real amp. Ever been to a gig? Did they have 10watt solid-state Marshalls onstage with them?

True. However the amp really is only good for a beginner. Once you get passed your first year of guitar playing you'll really dream of better things.
POSTED: 08/17/2009 06:39pm

I find it sad how many people love it. That said, ignorance is bliss, and if they're happy with it, let them be. They won't get far in life with a MG though.....
I myself found the cleans on it usable and decent. The distortion is terribly digital, almost painful to listen to.
Anyone who likes this amp obviously hasn't played a tube amp before.
POSTED: 10/01/2009 01:40am

Practice amps often expose players for what they truly are. If you are a good player, you'll sound good even on solid state practice amps. If you can't make it sound good (and I've heard players make MG's sound amazing), then you probably don't deserve the $2,000 rig you compare *everything* to in all of your "experience". It sounds to me like a lot of people who come to bash these as not "real" amps should probably get one and use them for their intended purpose - practice. My suggestion is that you do so until you don't need $2,000 to sound good.
POSTED: 07/28/2011 10:54am

Just a few more thoughts on the small MG amps. The Roland Cubes and the Line 6 Spiders are modeling amps, right? The sound coming out is a software-rendered emulation of a totally different amp and cabinet. The MG, for all of its solid state awesomeness, is intended to produce a tone organic to that amp and its own cab. For example, it won't sound like a cranked 4x12 with the volume at bare minimum (unlike a modeling amp). However, turn it up to 4-5 and you're gonna get the intended tone out of the cab. In essence, the amp sounds better the more you drive the speaker. This is probably why they went with 6.5" speakers - to balance that because if you went with larger like the Spiders it would be unreasonably loud when volume alone isn't what youre going for. It's been my experience that modeling amps sound worse as you crank them because the magic fades as the reality of the small speaker and cab overcomes the emulated illusion of a 100watt, 4x12 Mesa and you're left with a mess.
POSTED: 07/28/2011 11:31am

I must stress (because people here at the UG seem to have problems when reading) that simple SS amps can be very good: think at Marshall's excellent AVT reissue series. It's the digital modelling who's ruining everything. First and foremost, the musical hearing of the guy who's using it. But this amp is non digital. But I agree that I don't like digital modeling that much (because they have so much features that you won't use and it makes finding a good sound too difficult AND they are copying the sounds of amps that exist, they will never sound better than the original amp). Keep it simple is the way to go!
POSTED: 12/07/2011 08:24am

You're right, it's not a digital modelling, I mistook it for an MG FX, this one only has some digital features like CD input and, of course, stamped circuits. It's not an analogue amp, though.
But, since you've opened the discussion, nobody mentions the speaker. Arguably, one of the lousiest speakers offered by "good" companies, "custom-voiced" being an euphemism for crappy .
As for digital modelling, you're right once again. Simple is better. People don't understand that an amp doesn't have a "sound" of its own. Its sound comes out only when a guitar is plugged in. The sounds "emulated" through digital modelling aren't the amp's own sounds, which don't exist, but the sounds a specific amp produces when connected to a guitar. Not ours, of course.
That's why, except for some very expensive digital rigs (that go beyond 10.000 euros), all guitars sound the same when using a digital amp. You plug in a Les Paul, you plug in an Ibanez X, you plug in a vintage Tele from the '50s, it all sounds exactly the same. Something never happened to an all-tube amp.
POSTED: 12/07/2011 12:38pm
