Agreed with gab4554.
It's like, I see it like this. If you buy another signature model, that your gonna use for gigging and live on stage, what happenens if you get signed? Technically you shouldn't be able to to play that instrument anymore as it's technically someone elses signature guitar and therefore most importantly SOUND, and NOT YOURS!
POSTED: 10/15/2007 04:53pm

I don't know about that. I just bought a Hellraiser a few weeks ago and it pretty much destroyed the Syn Custom that was at the shop. And why is everyone talking about the price, it's cheaper than my Hellraiser by about $200 (but my Hellraiser came with a Floyd Rose trem and nutlocks, which, I didn't even realize until shopping around further, apparently aren't standard on a Hellraiser). It probably also helps that I keep my Hellraiser in DGCFAD, so it just sounds like a red-eyed beast from hell, coming to eat your flesh and rape your soul.
POSTED: 10/16/2007 01:21am

That's also the main reason that I kind of ruled out this guitar when I was shopping for one even though I really liked the sound and look. If I were a guitar collector, then hell yes I would buy artist custom guitars from bands/guitarists that I like. But I only own one guitar and a bass, and if my only guitar were an artist's custom, I'd just feel like a tool.
POSTED: 10/16/2007 01:26am

Hi there, it was me who reviewed this guitar, had to register to leave this comment though!

yeah i didn't pay that price, thats the converted price. I'm actually from Scotland and it was only Ģ699 over here which is a bargain! Its just the conversion rate that makes it look so high. I've been reading all the comments here and yes, i know it's a signature model and if that aint your thing then fair enough. And as far as the Invader sound, they sound perfect to me, plenty of bite but good raw power behind them too and plenty of muscle. I have 5 other guitars too and this is definitely the best one in my collection.

Oh btw, was at an avenged sevenfold gig on sunday and managed to get synyster's guitar pick!!!
POSTED: 10/16/2007 03:13am

i just ordered one of these from a US website called gearhounds. They retail for $1299 US and the standard retails for $899 US. Gearhounds do the custom for $899 US and the standard for $699 US. Its a great deal and for something like 70 bucks more they give you a matching hardcase... yeah i know bit stingy on the case but still. I also live in australia and theyve given me free shipping on it. The whole lot: Syn gates custom and case came to just over $1000 AU which is pretty good since over here the guitar retails for over $2100, and i paid $2500 AU for my rr1 haha. Ive also played it and even though its a sig guitar and playin a guitar with another dudes name on it is gay, it really is probably one of the best guitars ive played for feel and comfort and it even sounds awesome. I really like the shape, feel and sound of it, just not the 'pimp stripe' shit and the inlays. Solid black woulda been better for me and more simple inlays. Only reason i got this guitar over the Hellraiser-Avenger was for the pickups (and headstock, the normal avenger's looks gay), as i already have EMG's on my Jackson RR1 which i put on myself, they give a really cool sound but i want something a bit different, no point having two guitars with the same pickups or the difference in sound wont be great. Also i play through a peavey 5150 head which i bought 3 years ago, both sound great through it and i love the whammy.
POSTED: 11/11/2007 12:45pm

I have one, and all I have to say is that chicks LOVE this guitar, I promise. After all, isn't that the real reason we all get in a band in the first place? I've gigged with it and get so many more compliments on it than I do with my Wine Red Gibson Studio with EMG's. Besides, would you not go on stage with a Gibson Wylde Bullseye, or an RR signature just because it's not "yours?" We all have idols, so who cares if you go on stage with one of their guitars?
POSTED: 11/17/2007 01:34pm

i agree with alot of you whats the matter of having a signature? I mean we all copy licks from our favorite players in majority of the music we create.Music is a cycle lets face it.Reason why i like signatures alot is there different strange features it has than regular guitars.Plus to make or have your own custom guitar let alone different add on specs to your own guitars adds up and it gets really pricey.
POSTED: 11/21/2007 06:05pm

I bought one of these 4 days ago and haven't put it down. I like everything about it, and have long been an Avenged Sevenfold fan so I don't mind the death bat inlays and such. I was originally going to get a Hellraiser C-1, but was much happier with this having the Seymour Duncan Invaders, much cleaner sounding. Also love the Floyd Rose, this thing screams. Its understandable for not wanting to play someone else's signature series on stage, I was looking for a versatile guitar for people to use in my studio. Having the ability to switch the pickups from humbucking to single coil is a nice little feature too, this guitar has tons of sounds. If you don't mind the A7X flashiness it is a great piece, I'd recommend it to anyone.
POSTED: 11/26/2007 07:50pm

I want one soooo bad. I played one in guitar center a while back and I fell in love with it. It makes my hellraiser seem like crap.

Umm...I have a Hellraiser C-1 FR, which is $850 and the Custom is not cheaper, it's $200 more. However, trying both guitars out, I do think the Hellraiser is much better, looks and sound wise than the Syn Custom. If it didn't have the "SYN" on the fretboard and if they replaced the scorpion head with a hellraiser head, more people would like it. And for those who think Syn NEVER played a Hellraiser C-1 FR, he has. If you want proof, give me your email and I will send you the picture of an old model, and no, it's not that white C-1 FR he uses.
POSTED: 10/21/2008 08:10pm

Diff between both guitars is that the custom has better pickups, its a set neck (not a bolt on), the floyd rose trem is original (not licensed) and the fretboard is rosewood instead of mahogany (i think)
POSTED: 01/10/2009 03:22am

That's also the main reason that I kind of ruled out this guitar when I was shopping for one even though I really liked the sound and look. If I were a guitar collector, then hell yes I would buy artist custom guitars from bands/guitarists that I like. But I only own one guitar and a bass, and if my only guitar were an artist's custom, I'd just feel like a tool.

POSTED: 02/10/2009 08:07pm

Hey man i made the same mistake you did and embarrassed myself for trying to tell someone off...the 2008 version had a rosewood fingerboard and the 2009 has a ebony and your right about the standard having rosewood because it still does but the custom just recently got the ebony feature other than that i just bought the 2009 Schecter Synyster Custom and it came in the mail yesterday but i am at the beach and havnt been home to play it yet
POSTED: 05/27/2009 04:41pm

Sorry for double post. The SSC is exactly what Synyster Gates uses, except when he is playing certain songs he uses the same guitar but with a different neck pup, like in Critical Acclaim, for example. The SSS (Schecter Synyster Standard) uses inferior pups, and a lisenced FR system as opposed to the superior Original one on the SSC.
POSTED: 08/27/2009 12:24pm

I just bought Dimarzio cliplocks for it (mainly white with black plastic) and they arent bad...as a fact i LOVE them. Totally blows my friends SG Special Faded out of the water. I use mine through an Orange Thunderverb Halfstack my brother recently bought and a Boss Mega Distortion (and of course an ISP Noise Supressor and a Boss Equalizer) my friend has marshalls and multi-effects but i stick to Orange and single effect pedals
POSTED: 03/18/2010 03:19pm

I value the opinion of the people who have bought and reviewed these guitars. Every guitar i've seen has someone's name it, Schecter, Gibson, Fender, Dean so what difference does it make if it has Tony Iommi, Dimebag, Dave Mustaine, Michael Amott, Zacky Vengence or Sinnister Gates name on it. They are great guitars for the price, if you think they are too expensive grow up. I will buy and play which ever guitar i want and i want a Schecter Zacky Vengeance Signature ZV Fractured Mirror Guitar. Up yours world, i will do as i please.
POSTED: 08/25/2010 06:14am

He does use that guitar but for some songs he switches to a model with a custom built in SUSTAINIAC pickup, not a fernandes sustainer.
When it comes to the look I can see why people do not prefer it but it plays amazing and I probably couldn't walk into a shop and play 6 better guitars. You should practice more then play it again someday.
POSTED: 12/09/2010 05:46pm

This is probably the wrong place to do a review but heres a short one
(I have owned the custom model for 10 months now)
PROS:
The Neck and fretboard play like a dream.
The pickups with a GOOD amp (everything sounds lame on a rubbish amp)
The looks (personal opinion)

CONS:
No forearm contour can sometimes make it uncomfortable after an hour of playing
It is rather expensive

Overall if you can afford it, dont mind a lack of forearm contouring and like the looks then definatly try it out it plays beautifully and the pickups DO sound good. My only other problem would be if i became an established guitarist i would want my own guitar rather than someone elses image but hey ho its very, very good. 4.5 stars

I've never played a guitar with EMGs but my friend has an ESP LTD EC-1000 with EMG81 pickups. Personally I like the sound of my Schecter Synyster Custom with Invaders better than his LTD. If you get the chance though, I suggest going to a guitar store where they have a guitar with Invaders or even Black-Outs and try one.

Personally I think the Invaders are awesome, though if you want a more heavy sound I suggest looking at a guitar with Seymour Duncan Black-Outs.
POSTED: 05/17/2011 05:43am

Anyways its a decent guitar way overpriced though, your mainly paying for the name with this type of guitar.
Nothing spectacular here.
POSTED: 07/09/2011 11:24pm

A good friend of mine has this guitar. I've played it and it's a really great guitar, but I wouldn't buy it. Mostly because it's not super versatile. It's perfect for metal but IMO nothing else. Honestly It's nothing special. You can buy it to sound like Synyster Gates, but the real money is in creating your own music and developing your own style... which you CAN do with this guitar.

Again, it's an amazing guitar for metal, but don't expect it to do much more
POSTED: 07/10/2011 04:16am

One thing i noticed is that the black/silver which i have has a lot more low end than the white/gold... which is probly due to the fact that the white/gold is several pounds lighter than the black/silver(No joke the black/silver is the heaviest guitar I own aside from my double neck
POSTED: 08/08/2011 06:06pm

I was never a fan of A7X but then my drummer(who is a huge fan) and i walked into guitar center and he almost creamed his pants at the sight of the guitar... I dont know why and he begged and pleaded for me to just try the guitar... my first thought was that loser synyster gates why would i want that thing! but then i picked it up. The action was so low without a single buzzing fret, the sound had more low end than i typically enjoy but what the hell.. the neck was fast as lightning, in short the guitar played it self. i put it on lay away and picked it up a week later

Moral of the story. just not liking a guitarist is not enough reason to dislike his gear
POSTED: 08/08/2011 06:14pm

Differences between Standard & Custom:

Duncan Design HB-108 Detonators vs. Custom Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invaders (shiny allen bolts) (The SH-8s are better pups, but you can swap those out for far less than the $350 difference; not a big deal unless you play through a tube amp)
Bolt on neck vs. Set neck (slightly less fret access, but no big deal IMHO)
Tinted rosewood fretboard vs. ebony (tint comes off when you clean it)
LFR vs. OFR (no problems there functionally; some LFRs hold up better than some OFRs)

I have had the Standard for several years (found one so cheap at a pawn shop, I couldn't pass it up). Now mine has a real SH-8 in the bridge and a Sustainiac in the neck. That was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I've played a bunch of the Customs at GC with an amp just like mine (JVM 410h), and the Custom is sweet, but not worth the extra $ IMHO.

Yeah, I would feel dumb playing it on stage, but I might record with it. Neither the SH-8s nor the SB-108s sound muddy through a proper amp with the right EQ.

The "Revenger" doesn't come close, nor do any of the other stock Avengers out there. They have the lame headstock and the sculpted body, plus different pups. The SYN Standard and Custom are the only factory Avengers I've come across with a flat body, and IMHO that's worth putting up with the gaudy stripes and inlays. Just my preference, and only a factor for you if you hate sculpted guitar bodies.

It's extremely comfortable to play and it balances perfectly playing standing up. Of course you should upgrade to Schaller strap locks. I wouldn't trust any strap buttons.

If you get a good one, you can have the action as high or low as you want, with zero buzz. I can't feel the inlays, in fact the fretboard seems slightly scalloped, which makes up for the frets just being jumbo, not extra jumbo like you'd find on most Ibanez shredders. It has the same feel as both my Ibanezes.

If I didn't have other good enough choices for stage use, I'd refinish my SYN Standard. It would be a lot cheaper than having Schecter (or anyone else)make me one from scratch. If I did have them build one, the only change I'd make would be the graphics, otherwise I think it's their best config available. Think what you want about Haner's playing, but he knew what he was doing when he chose the specs on that guitar.
POSTED: 08/26/2011 07:46pm

I bought it about a week ago, so I'll just make a little mini review on the impressions so far: The guitar plays a little less comfortable when I'm sitting, but it's fine when I play standing up.

Whenever I played standing up though I had the feeling the strap might go off at any moment, so I replaced them with golden straplocks (Matches the guitars swag white & gold looks)and it feels a lot more secure now.

What I did notice is that the guitar wasn't perfectly set up, and the low E was buzzing a bit. The guitar withstands divebombs pretty good, but it does need to be retuned after a couple. (At least mine does)

I'm not going to comment about the sound because a big part of the sound is the Amp, and I'm not satisfied with the one I currently have.

This guitar seems to be like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it. Personally, I love it. I don't own one, and I'm not a huge fan of Avenged Sevefold (I do like 'em a bit).
I like the shape, granted, not everyone will, and I don't care that it's a signature guitar. Why is that a problem?

If you are a huge fan, why WOULDN'T you want to own your favourite guitarist's axe? Me personally I have a Washburn Dime 333. Basically a Dean ML, yeah it's a ridiculous shape just like the Syn custom, and it's got lightning bolts on it. If I had the chance to play a live gig though, I would choose that over my LTD EC 1000, because it represents me in a sense, as well the guitarist who designed it.

It shows more of the kind of music that I like (Pantera) and that I respect my idols. I don't see what's wrong with that.
Sounds like you're not stretching the strings enough before calling your string change complete. If it still has the factory strings, then they probably weren't stretched enough either. Time = money and most professionals won't take the .5 to 1 hour required to fully stretch the strings so you can have stable tuning.
I can dive bomb all day for 6 months with my Standard and it won't go out of tune.
POSTED: 11/25/2011 11:50am

A few good points there, but you make it sound like Brian Haner is a luthier and designed this guitar from the ground up.

No.

You can go to the Schecter Custom Shop site and lay out the options you want. Like basic shape (Avenger), sculpted/flat top (flat), fretboard wood (ebony), neck joint (set neck), pickups (SH-8), trem (OFR), headstock (devil horns), wood (mahagony), and knob type. Then send in sketches of special graphics for the finish and inlays--or if they're sponsoring you, they'll sit down with you and help you come up with all the choices and do the art for you.

You don't have to be a luthier for that.
POSTED: 11/26/2011 01:24pm

Hardly a mediocre guitar! I have one, im not a huge avenged sevenfold fan... i didnt get it because a bum synyster, i got it because i think it looks cool. i got it new but damaged (b stock) for about half the price, but i would have payed the full amount for it. im not going to cty about a tiny scratch on the back of the headstock!
The pickups are amazing, they make a dirty crunch kinda sound, like no other guitar i have tried thru my 6262 with custom EL34's and Eminence Legend 1258's in custom 412!
its totaly comfortable to play for long periods of time, 10x better than my tele anyhow! i play with eb skiny top heavy bottoms, but could benefit from a proper set of 10's maybe?
feels nice and balanced, looks ace but its not a guitar i would ever gig with (again) :-( the trouble is people who know who syn is expect you to play like him, or at least some a7x songs.... so thats the only bad thing i guess.
the neck is one of the fastest i have played.
POSTED: 01/11/2012 09:57am

Do you really think you will get their signature sound playing through any amp in a guitar store and played by you. The biggest determinant in a sound is the amp and processing and the guitarist.
Marley I am super curious why youfeel that this guitar is not versatile. To be honest I had read so many comments like what you had just written and was pretty sure I would find the same thing. What I did discover was quite the opposite. I feel it is extremely versatile, far more so than many other guitars I own.

The bridge pickup is very hot but it can be dialled back by turning the volume down and then it gives very gentle breakup. When it is put into split coil mode you can get an almost clean sound that actually sounds very close to an acoustic guitar because of its very big bottom end.

The neck pickup has about half the output of the bridge. It is not very useful for metal or leads unless you turn up the gain on the amp quite a bit. In split coil mode I can run it clean on a Jet City 2112RC. It is beautifully articulate and all notes can be distinguished clearly. The middle position that shares the two pickups gives it even more versatility.

Now this guitar doesnt twang like a Telecaster or quack like a Stratocaster and it always sounds big so it is probably not ideal for country music but it has almost all other bases covered.
POSTED: 11/30/2012 12:09am

I had a chance to swap it for a Jem 70V. I thought hard about it. I want the 70V but did not want to give up my Syn Custom. I'll definitely save my pennies for the Jem
POSTED: 12/04/2012 02:01am

Played this is the shop once. Didn't like it. Found it to feel plastic-y. Like a toy. Maybe I'm missing out on some great aspect everyone else loves about the feel, but to me, it felt like a toy.
POSTED: 01/29/2013 05:51am

How can anyone call it plasticky. Its a solid chunk of nicely shaped mahogany. I consider myself extremely finnicky and have a really hard time liking something. I find it even harder to like something that I do find nice for more than a month. This is the first guitar that I love more ever since I have owned it. I almost exclusively play only this. It feels so beautiful to hold and play.

What people reading this really long page should do is to understand that most people on here came here because they are pissed off Avenged Sevenfold fans who dont like the creative direction the band has taken and are rubbishing the guitar. For the record Avenged Sevenfold is one of the greatest rock bands and its guitar duo are two awesomely talented axemen. The silly think is these same people who comment in a particular way probably dont know how to play more than a few chords if at all. So do yourself a favour, go and try to find one in a store and form your own opinion. Dont be swayed by the nutjobs that frequent this place.
POSTED: 02/01/2013 11:55pm

I really didn't mean to offend you, I love Avenged Sevenfold and their guitars. All i meant was that it didn't click with me. If it clicked with you, fantastic- it just wasn't the guitar for me
POSTED: 02/15/2013 05:54pm

No worries. I was not really offended but rather just surprised how someone found it plasticky. It is made of wood Where was the plastic. Without wishing to labour the point the only guitar that I would call plasticky are the controllers for Playstation's Guitar Hero.

Having said that you are entitled to your own opinion so I apologise if I was too harsh.

I have two more guitars. In isolation those guitars are great they are a Fender Blacktop Strat and a Squier Classic Vibe and I feel that from a tactile perspective this Schecter is far superior to them. I find it hard to pick up the Fenders after the Schecter because they feel quite clumsy especially the square neck plates.
POSTED: 02/27/2013 08:34am
