you could put any pickup you'd like that fits in your guitar.
it all depends what sound you're chasing.
POSTED: 04/18/2008 04:30pm

these push out a lot of sound. good for rock-blackmetal. Emgs are more tame and if you want to stick with passives you should go for dimarzio super 2's or X2Ns.
POSTED: 05/02/2008 12:44pm

50% true: They are really sensitive pickups for sure and pick up just about everything that comes off the strings but they're definitely not noisy. They'll make your playing sound better, period.
POSTED: 07/28/2009 06:30am

I might miss the magical clean tone they had but they werent all that great for playing in low tunings, such as A#. Im hoping that the tighter low-ends and higher gain will cut away the muddyness that ive had to tweak the s*** out of my amp settings n s***, Im a new user btw, Hiya.
POSTED: 08/20/2009 10:17pm

yeah... i just bought an ibanez rg370dx, which is brilliant, but i find it to be very mid sounding... im was wondering if installing a blackout in the bridge would both cut the mids and boost the bass and treble?

also it was mentioned that the blackouts are good for drop tunings... seeing as i have an edge and my guitar is prmenantly tuned to drop C#, would they help to cut out some of the muddyness im getting?
Well, you sound like you played a faulty pair? Maybe through weak distortion? And if you can hardly get pinch harmonics out of the guitar then maybe you need to fix your technique. I reckon the EMG's are less muddy than the Blackouts (not that I'm saying the Blackouts are muddy).

I tried these out and I think that these have much more output then the EMG's but the EMG's sound much clearer and I think they do much better on higher notes so my preference would be the EMG pups. Either way it BOILS DOWN TO PREFERENCE!
POSTED: 12/09/2009 09:30pm

I also have another lp custom with EMG 60,81 set up and I really like the sound of the blackouts a lot more. So much that I want to get another set to replace the EMG's. I always loved emg's and got blackouts from my wife for Christmas and have totally loved them(after being quite synical towards a new set up, I wanted EMG's lol). Super quiet when nothing is played and amazing tone and sustain. They put the EMG's to shame. It really does depend on your style and ear though. I loved EMG's until I started playing serious drop tunings(which I have found the blackouts pickup a lot cleaner tone. The EMG's got more muddy the lower I tuned).
POSTED: 09/07/2010 04:15pm

I have these in My Les Paul 7 string and they sound amazing. I have them wired with a killpot and I didn't even need to rout a battery pack because it fits in the back cavity with a little foam.
POSTED: 12/12/2011 07:57am

The battery isn't that big, it'll fit no problem.
I squeezed one into my Jackson RR1 under the volume/tone controls. And that's ALOT tighter than a les Paul.
POSTED: 04/25/2013 06:50am

I didn't really agree with Aleksi's review. That person said that the EMG 81 pretty much sound the same in any guitar you shove it in. I know with active pickups the wood, body style and bridge don't have as much of an affect on the tone of a pickup, but I've also noticed that the EMG 81 sound best in heavier darker woods like mahogany. I had an EMG 81 once installed in a basswood body guitar and it didn't sound all that great, but when I put the 81 in an alder body guitar it sounded 10 times better to me. Basswood tends to lack low end and really brings out the highs in a guitar and the EMG 81 has a lot of high end and not so much low end so unless you want a naturally super bright sound with not much low end then I'd avoid using basswood for an EMG 81, but for those of you that want an active pickup that works well with a basswood body try a Dragon Fire 81c/85c set, they work great in my basswood ESP LTD M-100(not M-100FM which is an agathis wood).
POSTED: 05/21/2013 06:12pm
