This album surprised me, for what it is, it's a good album. And I like their... subtleties. The fact that instead of just saying "We're all too smart to talk to God" they have small repeated by the backing vocalist confusing what's being said. I liked it.

It's different to A Fever which I liked as well.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 05:28am

As much as I would like to, I'm not going to give it a 1 just to drag down it's user rating, since I have not actually heard the album. This band made my life a misery back in 2006. lol

I like that the top review compares it to David Bowie and The Beach Boys, they're both great[NOTE: The Beatles are the most overrated band of all time]. Maybe this album will actually be alright.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 07:44am

Ryan Ross is a great lyricist. His lyrics are both simple and clever. Some of these lyrics can be seen in “Do You Know What I am Seeing?”: “Clouds are marching along, singing a song, just like they do./If the clouds were singing a song, I'd sing along, wouldn't you too? /If you just knew what they could do./Oh, if you just knew, what would they do? ” Another example of these lyrics can be seen in “Behind The Sea”: The men all played along/To marching drums/And boy did they have fun/Behind the sea/They sang (hey! )/So our matching legs/Are marching clocks/And we're all too small/To talk to God/Yes, we're all too smart/To talk to God.”

I can't see how either of those examples make this guy a great lyricist... Perhaps if he was in 4th grade remedial English he'd be at the top of his class, but I assume he's not so... it seems my dog's most recent turds have more substantial lyrics than this guy has ever dreamed of...
POSTED: 04/09/2008 07:53am

this album is just so boring! it completely rips off the beatles to an extent that its just unbelievable and the band appears to have lost the passion that once appeared to be in the music.
the album doesnt progress or develop rather it plods along clutching at the classic sounds they can only hope of emulating.

the lyrics still make no to little sense in the majority of places but now they arent covered by that infectious dance/synth sound that made the music interesting.

my two cents....
POSTED: 04/09/2008 08:47am

first of all, i'm with fifi. why is this on a guitar website if the guitar and/or bass is pretty bad, and extremely repetitive.

Secondly, their new album and video SCREAM sgt. peppers at me. which sucks because sgt. peppers is a GOOD album. It's like they're trying to take the beatles to the next level, but are in reality regressing. If you want to hear some pop music reminiscent of the beatles, but actually good and not just a ripoff, listen to Of Montreal. Other than that, Panic is the new F.O.B.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 09:00am

Spot on. It was bad enough when I first heard Nine in the Afternoon, and thought it sounded like a poor Beatles clone, but then I saw the video and it just said to me that they were trying too much to emulate The Beatles. At least their old stuff was catchy and had a direction to it, I wouldn't skip it on my ipod if it did come on, however I'm 2+ years older now and probably wouldn't listen to them ever again.
Just because he doesn't like a band you do doesn't make him "musically ignorant." He doesn't have to like Meshuggah, and why even compare them to Panic? There is no comparison, they are completely different. Stop dissing Panic as well, they are good at what they do, making nice pop rock. It's nothing amazing, but it's not bad either. Good album too, even if they put a little too much Beatles.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 10:41am

Probably so, duncang.

People shouldn't be allowed to post in reviews unless they've actually listened to and can judge an entire album truthfully.

Honestly, I don't understand what's up with the whole "hate" thing against Panic! and Fall Out Boy. They're honestly not that bad of bands. They're not anything to write home about, but they're really not that bad.

its not that the music itself is bad, people just don't like their mainstream, conformative image, especially when there r truly talented bands out there with much less recognition purely because they stick to their morals and refuse to sell out.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 11:05am

All you haters should really get lives, i mean what is the point of reading a review for a band you blatantly don't like?
Yes, you people have opinions and i think we're all clear of them.
Personally i think its a great album, its really bold and its clear to see that they have progressed as musicians and as people shown in sound and lyrically.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 11:07am

Jesus, grow up guys, don't rate it if you don't even have the album, just be a little more tolerant of people's taste. i like panic, as well as metallica, iron maiden, suicide machines, blood brothers, etc, just don't come here with your negitive ratings.

P.S i know i'm like the 100th person to say this, but still
POSTED: 04/09/2008 11:39am

Well Pogo I'm definitely a diehard metal fan, and even though this isn't music I'd listen to on a day to day basis, I can admit that after seeing one of their recorded live performances they write interesting and fun music, and are good performers. There's a lot of ''fun house'' styled song writing and I like that.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 11:52am

Grow up. And to the guy who namedropped Meshuggah, nobody cares. Get this: I've never HEARD of Meshuggah before, and I'm still not impressed that you listen to them. So good luck impressing the people out there who actually have heard of them.

And for the record, I think "Pretty. Odd." is decent... the decision to include Ryan Ross as a vocalist was a good one (not that any of you have heard the songs he sings on, you just watched the 'Nine in the Afternoon' video on YouTube and then came straight here to bitch), because Ross's voice is less over-stylized and fake sounding. However, I think Fever was a better album overall.
There are a few great tracks on here though, but not enough. Completely lacks the energy of the last album, it's just not as fun to listen to for the most part. 7/10 effort, but if I want to hear experimental pop this isn't gonna be what I go to in my CD player, I'm gonna turn on Dog Problems or Satanic Panic in the Attic/The Gay Parade.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 04:00pm

People shouldn't be allowed to post in reviews unless they've actually listened to and can judge an entire album truthfully.

Honestly, I don't understand what's up with the whole "hate" thing against Panic! and Fall Out Boy. They're honestly not that bad of bands. They're not anything to write home about, but they're really not that bad.
its not that the music itself is bad, people just don't like their mainstream, conformative image, especially when there r truly talented bands out there with much less recognition purely because they stick to their morals and refuse to sell out.

i second that. even though i'm still not a FOB or PATD. though i must say i think i'll put PADT ahead of FOB anyday.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 05:01pm

How did Meshuggah even get brought into this?

Anyway, its a good listen, it gets really repetitive at some points but Ross' work on the album is much better with the guitar part and vocals. Personally, I like Fever better, even though it was way over-produced with the overlapping vocals, but the techno beats were something different and cool. They aren't technical in any sense of the word, but thats what Mars Volta and Tool are, they are a good pop-rock band.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 05:10pm

And you called ME immature!?

Also, it's not ignorant (the newest buzzword around here, may I add) to think that Meshuggah are bullshit. I see where they're coming from to. If you don't immediately like it from your gut then you do just see it as pointless chugging and that's totally understandable, really.
haha man, you crack me up. Obviously someone with a poor understanding of music wouldn't like Meshuggah, therefore he's being ignorant. And yes, you are and continue to be immature.

Uuuh...

I don't even know how to respond to this. I have a friend, who doesn't know anything about music. He doesn't know what a time signature is, what a key is, anything. He still loves Meshuggah. Your argument is just completely and utterly wrong. Someone with no understanding of music whatsoever can love Meshuggah just as much as someone with the highest qualifications available can hate them.

Trust me on this one, though, saying that ANY band is not 'real music' is just ridiculously immature.
haha whatever man, think what you like. And about the Meshuggah thing, I meant some people that have no knowledge in theory can't appreciate them on the same level of those of us who do. And so someone who isn't a huge fan of metal wouldn't like them if they didn't understand the underlying genius. Tons of people love them without knowing that genius and that's cool too.

Lol, this argument is so jokes. I'm gonna save this whole message board.

It's a review, not a bloody fan club. Reviews are meant to be objective. People who don't like the band are MEANT to read them, because that is how we gauge whether we should check someone out.

In panic's case, its obvious only the fans could be bothered making a review. They are an utterly rubbish band; even attempting to change their style and 'widen their playing base' has only furthered their inherent crapness.
POSTED: 04/09/2008 07:52pm

In all honesty though, you can't be serious comparing this band to Meshuggah. Honestly. Why would you even try? They do nothing alike, there is nothing relative between them and if you like one chances are you will hate the other. What's the deal man?
I wasn't comparing them, read one of my latter posts.

Ok, i'm just going to make a point here.

I've passed my fourth grade theory Exam. I did year 12 composition. I play bass at a 4th Grade level and Guitar at a 3rd.

However, I don't play music like that. I enjoy it sure, but I much prefer to crank out some Brand New or Say Anything. Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin. Early Blink 182, Yellowcard.

These bands are not extremely hard musically (Say Anything being an exception really). However, lyrically they are amazing.

My point being. Just because I know my theory doesn't mean I use it. Sure the music is obviously easy and not neccessarily hard to follow, as well as predictable. But it's what I enjoy.

What you know isn't what you play. The lead singer is a multi-instrumentalist. They all played instruments other than their own on this album.

just learn your stuff man.

And so someone who isn't a huge fan of metal wouldn't like them if they didn't understand the underlying genius. Tons of people love them without knowing that genius and that's cool too.

haha you crack me up! First of all I'd say any band that requires its listeners to be theoretically schooled and have a deep understanding of music PHAILS from the start because making music for musicians is like making furniture for carpenters. Pointless, unappreciated, and it doesn't at all contribute to society. And the way you (in another post I didn't quote) say lacking theoretical knowledge is the same as being ignorant is just... what?

But that wasn't my main point. Who are you to decide what's genius? I have deep theoretical knowledge, I'm rather fluent in most styles and genres and I find Meshuggah to be, eventhough they are nice guys, a lot of intricate and complex noise. I don't think it's genius, I think it's complicated and challenging to play but genious to me has shit to do with complexity. To me, Sinatra's vibrato is genius, Zappa's horn arrangements are genious, KISS lunchboxes are genius.

And even though I have absolutely no difficulty whatsoever playing or learning a P!ATD song, doesn't mean it's shit. Their songs are catchy, people enjoy them, that means they're serving a purpose as musicians. So what if they rip off the beatles, the beatles wrote some complex shit aswell and to me P!ATD sounds fresher than most popular bands these days.
If you think music has to be difficult, complex and hard to listen to to be considered genius, then I'd say have it your way, I personally pity you, just don't
POSTED: 04/10/2008 05:03pm

Sure, it's not right to just come and make immature comments like "I haven't listened to *insert band* because they're gay and suck compared to *insert other band*" and things of that nature, but we all have a right to comment. That's what the comment box is for. It's not called a "comment if you only want to kiss ass to *insert band* and praise them unconditionally" box. I listened to the first album, tried to like it, and then I didn't. I heard them live and I wanted to claw my ears out. I again tried with the second album and found it to be better, but in a negligible way. That is my comment.
POSTED: 04/11/2008 12:16am

Dude, I got pissed off at the thought that you're muscially illiterate if you don't think Meshuggah is the ultimate music, and that all other bands need to be Meshuggah in order to be relevant. That's just so dumb. And when I argument about something I back my case up, I don't just say "Fuck off n00b you know nothing about music" etc.

My grudge wasn't that he had different views, it was that he made some very elitistic remarks about his views being objectively enlightened and better than everyone else's, an attitude which I hate with a flag in the air.
POSTED: 04/13/2008 08:37am

The titles of the song leave a lot to be desired too, I mean they arnet exactly well thought out. Every title expresses the utter crap that exists within the waste of space on m friends hardrive.

I remember buying a fever you cant sweat out before it blew up in to the mainstream. I was playing it in my car with my 16 year old little sister (who is an avid listener of hardcore gangsta rap) and her first impression of it was that it was too annoying. I loved it the first few weeks it came out and wasnnt too suprised that within a month or two everyone was makining a fuss about them. Their unique blend of dance beat techno rock was addicting and fun. After a few months my sister tells me she watched the new video where they are in a strip club and admits she changed her mind about them, and says she likes them. I found it pretty funny, and gave her shit about it bc i accused her of only liking it now that it blew up on MTV and not noticing how cool it was when i first showed it to her. By this time though, i grew tired of the album, and found a few of the songs to be pretty bad. So coming in to pretty.odd, i had my doubts about it. What were they going to do this time? Do the same cabaret inspired dance techno sound....again?? I thought to myself, surely if they do that it wont be anything close to what the first one was, and that this would be the last time anyone hears of panic again. But to mine and everyone's surprise, they completely hack their old sound and go in an entirely different musical direction, for the better. Sure the new sound is obviously beatles inspired, and the band openly admits that quite proudly bc hell, the beatles are the greatest band of all time arguably, so i dont see why anyone could see this as a bad thing. I understand that the old sound was in many ways innovative and quite original, but after time it grew as quite repetitive and annoying. Something else i have noticed is that everyone that compares it to the beatles mentions particular songs that sound just like a certain beatles song, and i find that to be quite false. Sure the ispiration is clear and they're are simular elements ( slower time counts with simple precise guitar riffs) but panic still succeeds in making it entirely their own. I never thought i would be saying this a few years ago but, i cant wait for what panic has in store next!

Panic's first album was great! I bought just after I write sins not tragedies was released and before people even knew who this guys were... It took a while until I really got into the album (like 5 or 6 listens) but from then on it really grew on me, making them one of my favorite bands ever...
When pretty.odd. came out I bought the CD on day 1! I was very disapointed... The irreverent, wacky sound that made me love them was gone. Even so I kept on listening and once again after a few listens I started liking the sound and really seeing the lyrycs hat also made that first album so damn awsome were still there!
Now I really like both albums and these fellows are my fav band at the moment. If you just listen to it carefully you'll end up liking it, unless you're a metallica/iron maiden/slayer fan...xD jk I love all those guys too...
POSTED: 05/18/2008 03:51pm

honestly, if yours saying that this band is not creative then u don't know what creativity is. it

doesn't matter how small or how big it is these albums have some creativity. FOB has it, PATD has is, Metallica has it, Apocalityca has every band has it.

And on another note, when u say a band sells out because they become mainstream then u obviously don't have a clue. Although a lot of us want to make it in the music industries, lets face it; its not the most high paying jobs, you have to pay the bills some how and if that means product placement in music videos or signing to a major label you have to make money to survive and that doesn't mean that your selling out it means you are doing what you have to do to survive and thta is NOT i repeat NOT selling out!
Not every album has that "creativity". If you do a Copycat just because it will give you some cash (remember all post-grunge crap bands?) you are rolling around a bussiness. Music isnt a bussiness, is a expression, an art. Every entertainment sound out there is just that, sound. PATD is trying to sell innovation but they arent putting any effort at all. EFFORT. they are young, inmature. They cant get a perfect 10 in every record they sell, thats absurd, pointless (remember kobain?).
POSTED: 06/23/2008 01:29pm

The P(!)ATD boys completely ditched their old style (their record winning, acclaimed and inevitably "richer" style, mind you) for what they seemed to want to do, and my respect for them has skyrocketed because of that. If they were attempting to feed off the Beatles' success, then.. well, whatever, I like how it sounds nonetheless and I still respect them.

While we're all complaining about We're So Starving, I'd just like to mention that a good lyric doesn't necessarily have to beat around the bushes of the Amazon to be 'good'. If it's any consolation, the syntax of the sentence was correct, the words used are real ones and it's pretty blunt for all those AFYCSO fans that died inside upon hearing the opening chord, stripped of harpsichords and accordions and synthesisers as it was. What did you expect, "Oh, clock faces meet their twins and the globe pirouettes through another vast and starry abyss. But appearing as they are amongst the demise, floral-shirts with vintage hearts imprinted on their sleeves, they return. Fear not, adolescent hearts, remain poised, composure kept." It's only an introduction..? May I please direct your eyes to, perhaps, Yahhh - Soulja Boy, to show you just what a bad lyric looks like. Kthx.

I love this album. Style aside, Brendon's voice has shown a lot of improvement. Ryan's monotone is actually tolerable, enjoyable even, and I like that he's trying. Harmonies sound better (go Jon.), quality is clearer, there's instrumental variations and experimentations and interesting lyrics. I like it. Soulja Boy is just as clever as Panic at the Disco. They both know how to sell their product to a prospective market, potentially the most important thing in the music business now. Neither one is, however, marketable to the entire populous as artists like Michael Jackson or Prince were. Surely those two artists were immensely talented, but talent doesn't guarantee you fame. If talent did give you fame, heck, more people would know who Ali Farka Toure is.

That said, I would like to know how Panic at the Disco is so popular, so please explain it to me. I've been studying pop music for years, and if any band doesn't make sense to me, it is this band.
POSTED: 01/21/2009 03:21am

I'm not gay, but I do agree that is fairly derogatory to use the word as an insult.
POSTED: 02/02/2009 01:58pm

That statement is redundant, considering a sexual orientation is not an insult, nor a compliment.
Good job. And this is just one example of pointless comments.

Obviously people will hate PATD, due to excessive radio play, stereotypical scene fangirls (whom I can't stand, either), and the fact that they got discovered by that idiot Pete Wentz. I don't care, I enjoy both of their albums.

First of all, as of now, they have nothing to do with the emo / pop-punk style. They are pop-rock. They aren't your average pop-rock group, though. They pay close attention to composition of songs, such as complex chords (not just power chords like you may believe), odd time-signatures, and the addition of various instruments. It's obviously not the most complex music ever, but it's more impressive than a lot of the crap we hear on radio these days, hands down.

Oh, and by the way, I am not necessarily a listener of this style; I mostly listen to Radiohead, indie rock, and various jazz artists, and I can even go as far as listening to the death metal band, Necrophagist.

This review really pisses me off, due to it's immature behavior that makes me feel embarrassed to be a teenager, as well as a human being.

Honestly, I don't understand what's up with the whole "hate" thing against Panic! and Fall Out Boy. They're honestly not that bad of bands. They're not anything to write home about, but they're really not that bad.
They are that bad when compared to greats like Meshuggah or King Crimson.

Lmao, you're so coooool for listening to bands like that. Woaaaah.
I was just claiming those bands make panic look like nothing more than a couple of 14 year olds who cannot play their instruments, not that I'm cool because I listen to them.

Oh, and just because someone's not a virtuoso, that doesn't mean they can't play their instruments.
Also, Meshuggah makes PATD look like 14 year olds? What are you saying? They look old? You clever person, you.

May seem catchy, innovative and "a step in the right direction" for people who have never listened to or even heard of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, which is a shame.

The classic output from those two bands are around the same age as a middle aged human. While the music sounds dated now, the themes are still relevant, and the music catchy and inventive.

To say Panic at the disco has borrowed or paid homage to these bands is bullshit. This album is a shoddy ripoff and the video for nine in the afternoon gives the impression that their brainstorming session for this plagiarized pile was to listen to a few tracks off Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band and produce a fanfic-based sequel.

This band is nowhere close to being as inventive or good as their PR make them out to be. Their only consolation is that at best, the talented bunch of young men who did this stuff 40-50 years ago have settled into their roles as gentlemanly grandfathers and feel flattered by this bunch of plagiarizing hacks.

Morrissey seems to have similarly mellowed out by now. Maybe Panic's next studio effort can be a rip off the Smiths' classic The Queen is Dead?
POSTED: 02/02/2009 09:24pm

I was bored the other day so I thought I'll download this album and give it a listen, and I am now happy to declare that it truly sucks ass.
I admit my opinion isn't neutral, I tend to hate most stuff classified as emo but it's not unusual for me to come across a nice song in a genre I can't stand, like an effort that I can at least admire... and that's really not the case here, just a pile of horribly overated crap.
POSTED: 02/03/2009 10:11am
