Love,Peace and Chicken Grease, What does Chicken Grease have to do with the Digitech RP-80?If this guy would spend more time playin his axe, instead of complaining about the fact that he couldn't change the order of the fx in this unit,he may have more time to tell people what fx are actually available to the player.I happen to own an RP-80 and I don't care how many effects and in what order or what level they are set to. A little less talk and a lot more action would be refrehing in this review.Fx are no substitute for experience..
POSTED: 08/25/2006 04:38pm

This pedal is absolutely disgusting. As soon as I plugged it in, the pre sets sounded horrid. After soem tweaking it still sounded fake. And I tweaked everything, built effects from the ground up and even worked with the EQ in it and on my amp. I could not get this thing to sound decent at all.
POSTED: 04/03/2007 11:02pm

DONT BUY IT! I got talked into believing that i needed one to get my playing in time, but the guy at the shop was a dickhead. Get a decent distortion pedal or a good wah cause this is terible. The wah is non-existant, Also the flange is alright ON CLEAN but everything else is crap. My pedal is broken after having it 6 months (and barely using it cause my amp sounded better) so im gonna take it back to the shop and see if they can do anything. Ive used it to record dome guitar straight into the computer but the distortion is so bad its not worth it. SO DONT BUY IT!
POSTED: 07/03/2007 11:31pm

yeah, many pre-sets are bad, but i like it because i can use it to single out the effects intead of buying a pedal solely for them. The single effects themselves aren't top-notch, but they work in case i need a little effects to fill in, mostly like the reverb, some wah, and the tremelo. Just don't solely rely on the presets if you get it.
POSTED: 07/11/2007 02:25pm

it realy depends on your tweaking.. of course most multi effects have crappy presets that's why thy have the option to mix and match the effcts you like, got a digitech rp80 2 days ago and i used it right away in a gig it didnt let me down.. and i find the presets bad.. distortion? i dont use it coz i have separate one.. i use this for the modulations only but i checked them out, it does sound a bit fake but i edited it and now it sounds better..

I have an old dirt cheep (Abilene) strat copy that I installed a humbucker in the centre pickup position and wired it so as to be able to have it in or out of phase with the other pickups to get a jazzy cancellation effect. I have been playing guitar on and off for about 30 years and had been in and out of a couple of bands in that time. My best guitar was a $50 unknown brand that I put a fat SD pickup in the bridge position with an old Fender copy valve amp andused to get a good Hendrix sound from that combo. After that I had a Washburn solid body unit that was far too clean for my liking. I sold it and the valve amp at a great financial loss. I am now only a hobby guitarist and have a small Peavey practice amp which has a ceramic valve front end and it sounds great.

I have been playing around with the RP-80 with some success. As mentioned in this forum by many. It is not good for gigs, though I did program some side by side combinations so I could switch quickly back between rythm and solo, but if you have big feet or wide shoes, FORGET IT.
I had in the past used seperate pedals for gigs and it was a nightmare getting those set up properly for the first few weeks of doing gigs.
It is nice to have all the combinations set right in a single click of the foot.
I found the wah on the RP-80 sucks, especially compared to the Hendrix wah I had used.
The distortion is a little poorer than my seperate unit.
But the chorus is an improvement over my chorus box and much easier to set up.

Though I miss the Hendrix wah pedal, overall I enjoy using and sometimes abusing the RP-80.

1. you need a decent tube amp and a single coil guitar for this pedal (49 EUROs at Thomann) to sound great.
2. you have to act professional and organize your setting sets into correct order at a gig to avoid stepping through the sets.
3. you should use it as just another fx pedal in the line: EQ, noise gate, tremolo and chorus are fine +. Wah and Ya whatever are shitty. Delay is nice, but you need to use the ridiculous expression pedal (too small, too close to the knobs) here for live work.
Amp simulation - fuzz - overdrive is so-so. There are better ones.
POSTED: 12/28/2007 06:16pm

i bought this pedal last summer and the first time i plugged it in i was amazed. i was so happy with the presets that were already on there. i later learned that i could tweak them and the way to tweaking them so that they actually obtain the sound youre looking for is to listen to the sound you want, choose the amp model, put whatever effects you have on it, and what i dont think maost people realize is how much the eq tweaks the sound. I do agree that the wah isnt what it could be and the ya isnt very useful at all. this pedal is capable of about 99.999% of sounds you could ever want. I do agree with grimbear74100 on the fact that you need to strategically organize your presets. The only thing that i really wish that this pedal was capable of doing was the ability to run a chorus and a modulation at the same time so i could really match that eddie van halen sound. this pedal is my life. i wouldnt even want to play my guitar without it.
POSTED: 03/07/2008 07:29pm

Pretty good for the beginners, I'm completely content with it for now, but if you get serious you'd rather use some analog pedals or whatever. You can actually change the order and effect range is pretty wide so I think you'll be able to get the sound you want if you try. I think it's a bit better than Zoom, but I haven't really tried zoom.
POSTED: 10/30/2008 12:45pm

i have this pedal still, but im currently looking for a new one. It's good for exploring new sounds and effects, definitely a beginners pedal. the sound is pretty decent, some of the effects sound the same though, and through distortion, you kind of have to play around with the effects to get the best results.
POSTED: 08/09/2009 05:10pm

My parents bought this pedal for me on my birthday about 5 years ago. This pedal is really awesome if you have a good cabinet. I play it, usually the Rectifier model, through a KXR 100 - a solid-state KEYBOARD AMP - and it makes any commercial store target or walmart guitar sound awesome. Better than what a Spider III can do, anyway.

However,

I wouldn't recommend it plugging it in directly to your speakers, and I definitely would NEVER use its amp or cabinet models for recording stuff. In terms of that, it's really yucky.
POSTED: 09/22/2009 05:03pm

I had this 4 years ago and it served me well. Did some direct recording with it and eventually sold it, as I moved up to better gear. I thought it sounded really good. Bottom line folks is that you CAN get any of these cheapo processors to sound good if you configure them right and you don't drown your sounds in tons of modulation and delays.
POSTED: 10/10/2009 03:23pm

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I think Fender guitars sound better with effects petals because of their single coil pickups. Plugged my Strat into this thing and it sounded MARVELOUS. Plugged in my Les Paul and it was too muddy. Now I know some of you metal players prefer a thick, muddy sound, but not me. Paid a whopping $40 for this box, and was better than what I thought. I Especially like the Adjustable Delay for a rockabilly-1950s-Blues sound. Maybe not as good as a Echoplex, but it'll do.
POSTED: 01/06/2010 12:04am

This pedal is definately a steal at the price that I paid for it ($80 CDN) but one major issue that I have with it is the durability (or lack thereof). By now all of the parameter adjustment buttons have broken off. They used very thin plastic tabs to connect them and believe me, if u adjust this pedal as much as I do, they WILL break eventually. Now I have to take a piece of plastic sprue from one of my old model kits and stick it inside the housing just to adjust something as simple as patch volume, and don't get me started on the drum looper button. Once I get it turned on, it's easier just to unplug it and then plug it back in than to fiddle with the button to turn it off.
POSTED: 03/15/2010 12:35pm
