I don't share good impression about MG series of Marshall despite they have a dozen "by the way" effects! Old MG series is wasted money if you're looking for muscle sounded amp. Maybe they are cheap but they are also weak. Just for home noob use.
I have plenty of friends that have been playing for over 10 years for most of them and they still use the Marshall MG series for home use. Maybe you had a bad one, but most do not have that issue.

Or get a better amp and you don't need pedals. The amp must sound good without pedals and after that you can add some pedals if you need them. Pedals should be added to already a good sound. They are effects, not the main sound.

So buy a good amp first, then if you need, buy pedals. Because you might notice that the MT2 you bought gives you teh br00talz through your MG but once you plug your guitar into Mesa Recto, you'll notice that the amp has so much better distortion that it makes the MT2 sound like crap, not to mention it sounds crap already but you might not notice it until you buy a better amp. So you have $100 less money. And that money could have been saved for a new better amp.
