Slash's sound isn't bassy, and the APH-1 isn't either.

Slash has enough meat but his tone is very mid and treble related. Go see him live and you won't call his tone bassy.

I think its a common mis-coneception about his tone, its very easy to get carried away with bass, Try the Vintage Modern Marshall Slash uses and you'll see what I mean, thats not a bassy amp its made to rip through the sound.

Its got enough of every frequency but yet has emphisis on mids and highs for clearity.
POSTED: 09/03/2009 03:50am

This pickup has no problem cutting through the mix, I think you soaked your amp in bass.

I use the APH-1s in 2 guitars and in both postions neck and bridge, the corner stone of these is that they cut through the mix. My rhythm guitarist cannot hang with my set up the Vintage Modern and Seymore equiped Guitars, I slice through the sound like a fat chick through pie on a depression binge.

While I agree with your rating I do not agree with how you got there and I knew where you went wrong when you said its bassy, with the tone rolled all the way down it can be bassy but up to 10 it cuts through anything.

I don't think there is a more balanced pickup than the APH-1, it has every frequency nailed.

I think your review is suffering due to the fact you are using a solid state amplifier, I beg you to try a tube amp with these and I challenge you to write a similar review once you do, you will not be able to.

Hm, I've played a TON more with it since I reviewed this, and I've got to agree witj you. The sound is rich, cutting, singing, and sustaining. No bassiness.
POSTED: 10/13/2009 12:22am

The APH-2's are the Slash Edition of Alnico II's and they are wired hotter. They are his signature sound.
POSTED: 12/09/2010 07:08pm
