Waaahhh. Metal purists are so moronic. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Besides, it's not like anybody besides other crybaby metal purists care about the "sanctity" of a sub-genre.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 07:34am

Deathcore is the cancer of metal. It's like a tumor in the brain turning death metal into hurr durr durr.
Deathcore didn't rescue anything, since REAL death metal doesn't have to be rescued. It doesn't take a purist to notice that deathcore actually IS pretty damn bad.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 08:05am

Slowly dying? It was pretty much "dead" already—it's not like you could ever catch a Death Metal song on the radio. It was always an underground genre, and I doubt its fans give a damn how popular it is. Saying deathcore is good because it made death metal more popular is like saying nu-metal is good because it made metal in general more popular.
No... just not even close to reality.
Death metal has always had it's audience while most people who listen to deathcore hate death metal.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 10:20am

It's easier to delete a comment that might start an argument than ban people that get too heavily involved in one - you can post again if you feel the point's really that important.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 10:53am

On topic: Gave this a listen at college today, liking it quite a lot. I'm a huge TTEOTD fan despite my usual musical interests not lying in whatever genre they are this week. New vocalist is interesting
POSTED: 02/08/2010 11:18am

I just think that metal purists are narrow minded. There was a day and age when Death Metal was a bastard genre, and it was ruining what was considered the old genre [whatever that may be, I'm to young to know]. I know that this has brought about some shitty bands, but it's brought a lot of great bands, and has indeed kept metal afloat in a more popular way, so it's not just old dudes, and weirdo kids sitting in their parents basements with the lights off listening to Cannibal Corpse, hating everything.

On the other hand, GREAT album.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 11:33am

I like deathcore and I'm not even into this album. They were actually better back when they were more "core" than "death." They were doing something more interesting back then in my opinion. Of course it was still deathcore, but I feel like it had a more unique sound, now they just sound like another Black Dahlia Murder copycat band. Also, since Dayton Cantley left, they haven't really sounded like they've had any chemistry at all. Sure they play tightly, but their sound just doesn't pop like it used to.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 11:51am

Its not the similarities, its the differences. Deathcore is a plastic, simplified, badly made version of death metal. And it has breakdowns, very bad breakdowns. and the band members are all from the rural south of america. Or just from america. Infact, only america really makes deathcore.. I'll agree though, this is a huge step away from what they originally were, which is good or bad depending on your taste in metal. There's no need to argue the genre of this, it's a great album that I know the band put a good effort into. It succeeds in my opinion.
POSTED: 02/08/2010 06:55pm

.>
Traditional death metal has the capacity to be plastic, simple, and pretty terrible too. I've heard a lot of crappy death metal bands, and I've heard a lot of crappy deathcore bands. I've heard a lot of crappy metal in general.

Anyway, breakdowns aren't a "hardcore" thing. They're all over music. And there's a big difference between a hardcore breakdown and a metal breakdown, and most of the breakdowns in deathcore are NOT hardcore breakdowns.

Also, there are tons of European deathcore bands. TTEOAT, Sumatra, BMTH, Circle of Contempt, Heaven Shall Burn (if you consider them deathcore), My Autumn... I could keep going.

Anyone looking at the user rating for this album has to give it at least a 25% increase in score due to all the crybaby metal purists rating it down.

That all being said, I don't really like this band. Ironic, no?
POSTED: 02/08/2010 07:51pm

I think possibly the most death metal-sounding album ever recorded was Cryptopsy's 'None So Vile.' The thing is, what death metal 'sounds like' has changed drastically. If you compare this album to that album, it doesn't sound too death metal. But there is no longer such a distinct difference between what this album sounds like and what is heard as death metal. Basically, the shape of genres change and evolve, sometimes devolve (which isn't necessarily bad), and if you are listening to contemporary music and it doesn't fit the mold of what you believe to be a certain genre, then it probably is related to that genre changing. However, this has nothing to say about whether an album sounds good to you or not. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. However, genres are relative and ballpark references to the sound a band might be most grounded in. The best bands tend to not be totally grounded in a certain genre. The ultimate point is: don't judge whether or not a band sucks by the genre with which it is associated.
POSTED: 02/09/2010 12:42am

I said it once, I'll say it again. All music is inherently flawed. No way around it, as there is no one end all, be all musician (whatever form they occupy) or group. Without that apex of superiority, what does it matter if the band is mislabeled?
We have more urgent matters, like the fact that we've been listening to inferior music all of our lives.

The thing is though Deathcore is exectly what metal isn't meant to be: BORING. I can hear the usual Deathcore traits and tick them off as I listen to this album.
"Creature of the Night" vocals mixed with "insane br00tal" lows? Check
ADHD style drumming that gets slightly dull? Check
Riffs jumping all over the place and unable to actually write one that MEMORABLE? Check!
Mosh friendly and "t3h uber br00tal" BREAKDOWN full of diminshed chords? Check!
This is not metal that took ages to write, its metal that has been simplified for mass consumption, for the brootal kids to find easy to listen to without having to jump into the "tru death metal" end of the metal spectrum. It doesnt really offer anything new or different. This album tbh, sounds like Job for a Cowboy or Suicide Silence (SS have better vocals but), there is not distinguishing bands anymore. I am not saying Deathcore isn't metal, it is. Just really ****ing horrible. But there is nothing that can be done about it.
POSTED: 02/23/2010 11:14pm

Skepsis is, in my opinion, Through the Eyes of the Dead's weakest album. It lacks the creativity of "Bloodlust" and the musical strength of "Malice", even if they all do fall under the broader spectrum of deathcore. Skepsis fails to do what the other albums did, entertain and be at least somewhat memorable (I never get tired of the last breakdown on Truest Shade of Crimson), instead, for me, it just fell by the wayside with a myriad of other albums. Now don't get me wrong, Skepsis is a good album by a talented band; it has strong musicianship and some of the songs are good (Inherent Obscurity, Defaced Reality), but they lack something. Maybe it was their sizable lineup changes, but the musical difference between their last album and this one is immediately noticeable; I would venture to say that it showcases a move towards a more death metal sound. Honestly if you have not heard their other material I would buy it, and maybe download this album.
POSTED: 05/22/2010 01:32pm

So if you went to a metal show, and saw TTEOTD along with a band like that, and no one told you they were deathcore, would you talk shit on them? This thread is about that band, not the genre in general.

Listen to it. If you hate it then, say so. If you like it, shut your damned mouth and accept that whether you say it is or not, it IS metal. Subgenre or not, it is METAL. get over it.

Btw, BRUTAL cd. BRUTAL.
POSTED: 10/26/2010 07:21pm
