Price Paid: $39.95

Purchased From: Guitar Center, Redondo Beach

Ease of Use: It's simple to use, but getting the exact sound you want is a bit hard. // 7

Sound: I use a Squire Mini guitar (I'm only 12 and kind of short, so don't laugh) and a Marshall MG10 amplifier. It sounds awesome no matter what I do with it. Pretty cool. // 9

Reliability and Durability: I haven't had this effect that long (only 2 months) but I stomp on it like crazy, and it even stood its ground on days I was mad and had my heavy boots on. Wow! // 10

Impression: It is pretty awesome! I originally boguht this because of the price, I only had $50 and this was the best I could afford. But I tried it adn I felt like I was ripping Guitar Center off! It was well worth the $40 and then some. Basically, ME LIKES!!! *licks lips*
POSTED: 03/13/2006 08:55pm

Yeah i got it for 40 a few months back. its tone is kinda fuzzy but if you tweak with it you will be very satisfied with it. i use an OLP MM1 through the grunge pedal into a peavey basic 112 bass amp (im a bass player) and believe it or not the sound is better than some guitar amps i've played
POSTED: 07/29/2006 09:12pm

I know for sure you can get a Trivium sound on it. I use it for Trivium all the time. I find it relatively easy to get an AIC sound, but it's easier to get the high-gain setting, because all you have to do is set the last 3 knobs all the way up.
POSTED: 11/20/2006 09:10pm

but ive had it for 2 years, it has a great sound to it, i love it. And it works great for any punk songs, i like it for Co&Ca and metallica stuff
POSTED: 03/07/2007 06:15pm

"If someone would steal my pedal. I would just go get a 15 watt Spider 2 amp."

Don't get the Spider 2... those rape you of tone and never call you back to tell you they had a good time. Personally if you must grab a Spider grab a new Spider 3. but... yeah Personally I would have stuck with the DS, That has a little more versatility, especially if you get the keely MOD up in it.
POSTED: 03/08/2007 12:19am

I am disappointed with one thing... the battery prongs. It ripped after a few battery changes. Getting the plug was required, for an additional 20 bucks. I still like the distortion of this pedal, even after owning it a few months. It's really heavy. I need something for the classic rock songs we play though... either a Bad Monkey or Hot Head.

I personally like the Spider II better. I tried the artist presets on the III and wasn't impressed. But I think red insane is a waste of time and money...
POSTED: 04/04/2007 04:17pm

Does everyone realize that Kurt Cobain never had a "Grunge" pedal? No, he made the sounds himself using his own creative techniques, along with the Melvins, and Malfunshun and all those other great grunge bands. In my opinion this pedal is an embaressment to the grunge scene.
POSTED: 04/10/2007 11:18pm

I agree, i wanted to buy either the death metal or the grunge and i bought the grunge because i thought there was no difference. the pedals sound relatively alike. plus, it sounds nothing like nirvana's guitar sound or pearl jam, or any other grunge band of the day. if they really wanted to make a grunge pedal, it should have been a little lighter on the distorion.
POSTED: 04/22/2007 03:18am

IMO, this pedal has a heavier distortion than digi's death metal. Not a heavier death metal sound, but it's alot more distorted. All in all, it IS an effects pedal, an accessory. You can't do much with any pedal without a base tone, and this one, if used properly, can accentuate just about any tone that incorporates distortion.
POSTED: 05/01/2007 08:26am

Also. For all those line 6 haters. On the Spider 3, the insane setting is shit. It's got too much more than you'll ever use, but there are some good points to it. The red metal setting is okay, and a few of the settings (Although alot of them sound the same.) are usable. The flange/phaser is hard as hell to use, but sounds pretty neat when you figure out the timing on it. The hidden noise gate doesn't really do much for me, but the delay kicks ass.

All in all, it's overkkill, but it's salvagable. Just, stay away from 15-30watt models, they suck ass. Pay the extra and go 75. It's more than just volume.
POSTED: 05/01/2007 08:37am

I have this pedal and i constantly have it on mixer mode throguh an amp, since the amp socket seems to gainy and trebly for me... the mixer socket gives out this perfect cabinet style grunge distortion (muddy like grunge should be, but clear enough for the notes to sing) and it produces a brilliant tone for anything I like to play.
POSTED: 05/20/2007 07:39pm

This is an awsome pedal, it gets the job done day in and day out. My battery input wires snapped off from constantly changing the battery, so now i have to use an adapter simply plugging it into the wall. The sound is a bit confusing, it says its a grunge pedal but it plays too much as something you'd hear from a metalhead. All in all this is a great pedal though, very much worth the $50 i paid for it!
POSTED: 06/23/2007 01:04pm

This pedal is NOT noisy. Get a better amp or learn to EQ properly. I've owned or used a DS-1, MT-2 (Metalzone), ML-2 (MetalCore, still own it), Damage Control Demonizer, and a Line6 Uber Metal. DS-1 is shit, MetalZone is shit. For a $50 or less pedal, the Grunge is surprisingly better. Less EQ option, yeah, and some pedals just sound better through some amps. Perhaps I have one of the good ones (a Randall RH300 head). Someone said it has a "good dry punk sound". I would agree. I don't use this for metal, but it's great for a punk/hardcore sound, and for GRUNGE (obviously) and other brands of Hard/Heavy rock. Don't krank your EQ's or your gain. Keep gain AROUND 12 o'clock... tweak hi and low to your tastes. I keep my Low around 2 o'clock, and Highs around 12. Adjust level to match your clean volume (obviously). This thing gets a bit fizzy on the high end (like many cheaper distortion pedals and amps), but this thing is an absolute "diamond in the rough" for ONLY $50. Yeah, you'll get better stuff out of SOME pedals that are more $$...but the fact that this beats some of them says something. If you're a poor kid and need a distortion box, try this. And I play a lot of hi-gain and modern stuff, too... no shitty classic rock and metal for me!
POSTED: 01/20/2008 11:38pm

It sounds like a can of bees thrown at a wall. And plus, with most equipment nowadays, you pay for what you get and with most decent pedals priced around the 100-150$ range you can imagine what you get for 40$. the only thing DigiTech is good or "bearable" for is effects. Don't buy this pedal. save up for a few more days and get something with quality. It must be a bunch of newbies posting for this because anyone who knows anything about tone absolutely shuns this pedal. Unless you want that "my Peavey Rage 158 is in a tin can filled with bees and i play my jay turser with a quarter instead of a pick sound" Please don't get it. It's absoluely horrible. I'll admit, if you are a beginner learning how to play some higher gain music then sure, it's great. But other than that, it belongs in the dumpster.
Actually, I just think your an idiot rich boy who obviously has a retardation when it comes to setting up pedals or is too pampered by mommy and daddy's wallets to have to buy their own gear. I've been playing for eight years, been on three tours of New England, and recorded a full length album, and the DigiTech Grunge is proudly one of my line-up. You claim to know about tone, but my money is on the fact that you are Marshall/ Gibson humping freak saying that all the tone is in the high price pedals. If you actually took thirty seconds to set the pedal, you would have seen why I am saying this, so go have daddy buy you a $150 pedal so you can feel like you're not a newbie anymore and shove it up your a**. I'll be right here with a good DigiTech Grunge pedal.
POSTED: 08/30/2008 08:48am

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I've worked my ass off to buy my gear. The only thing in my gear that was bought for me was my wah pedal for my birthday. And that was all i got! And no, i don't believe that tone only comes in a 200$ package. I actually use a DigiTech RP200 for effects. Nothing fancy that's worth a mint. I have nothing against that product. My guitar is not top of the line, far from it actually. I hate marshall, i don't have a liking for gibson either. I never had an awesome amp to work with until now. I needed to use pedals to get a good sound so i'm not "retarded" as you say. Maybe I haven't toured anywhere or recorded an album. How many people can say they have? But that doesn't make your rant credible since I've seen a bunch of bands that are "on tour" and have really bad tone. That doesn't mean they're bad musicians at all. It just means that their tone is bad... My parents are far from rich, I should be going to college this year but I didn't have enough money and neither did my parents which means that yet again I am saving up for what I want. I take my time setting something up when it comes to sound because I can't stand it when my tone is not perfect according to my liking. I don't just crank the gain, bass and treble and get rid of the mids completely like a lot of people do. I'm man enough to admit that i used to do it. Sure, hasn't everyone done that in their beginner days or the first experience with an EQ? I've been playing for over 5 years now but i guess not having 3 extra years of "experience" makes me a ****ing simpleton when it comes to everything. That's 5 years of "actual effort-filled, dedicated" playing unlike some people who like to think their years in experience includes the year or 2 long break you took from playing because you got bored or you were just too lazy to pick up your guitar instead of a game controller. I have never heard the Grunge on a great amp. Heard it on everything from 15W up to decent halfstacks and I have never, EVER said or thought "Wow, y'know maybe I was wrong about this pedal. It must have been that shitty amp it was being played on last time that gave it that hacksaw sound." It seems like no matter what way you set up your pedal and amp, what pickups you have, what kind of guitar you have, what wood your guitar is made of, it just overall sounds bad. Oh and by the way, New England isn't very big...
POSTED: 08/30/2008 12:49pm

And I play a lot of hi-gain and modern stuff, too... no shitty classic rock and metal for me!

you do realize kurt cobain, the most famous grunge player, owned a DS-1, yet ur saying that this pedal is better for grunge and that the DS-1 cant do shit.
POSTED: 08/31/2008 01:34pm

the ds-1 / ds-2 / MXR Distortion / EHX Big Muff (NYC) are the best distortion / fuzz pedals for grunge, and are REALLY good for punk.
as an owner of a DS-1, and a Grunge pedal, I can tell you all that the Grunge pedal is crappy, it was made for Cobain, Cobain through it at the crowd at the only show he used it at, total peice of shit...buy one of the pedals I mentioned earlier, any one of those pedals are all really good.
POSTED: 09/29/2008 11:19am

Oh and by the way, New England isn't very big...

most of the people fanboying this pedal are using sh** equipment. Are you really going to accuse those guys giving this a bad review of not knowing what a distortion pedal is/does. For the money, this thing can be beaten easily by any boss distortion hands down. I've played on one side by side with my setup (used to be all boss pedals, now is just a Mesa Mark IV) and the distortion that this pedal could produce was thin and weak compared to several different boss settings that i use. If you buy this pedal be prepared for hiss-town and forget doing solos above the 12th fret of anything unless you want peoples ears to bleed from the high end.

Recommended: Boss: DS1, MT2(use with caution), OD20, etc. Please don't waste your money on "Mah it's not that bad..." equipment when much better can be had at the same price.
POSTED: 05/10/2011 12:55am

I love how everyone thinks this pedal is amazing. One of my friends had it. Pure garbage. The name says it all. "DigiTech" is exactly what it is, way too digital.
