modelling amp? no thank you

Older modelling amps used low-fidelity, low resolution models. Recent modelling in the Fender Mustangs, Peavey Vyprs, and Line 6 HD PODs are much higher resolution and simulate more variables, more realistically to achieve much higher fidelity than before.

I know a guy who gigs with his Mustang II, replacing his Fender Tweed. Despite its 40 watts solid state (similar to 20 watt tube) it can be heard well over drums at the venue where I've seen him play. He gets incredible tone out of that thing with a slide. When I asked him about his new amp, I couldn't believe it wasn't a tube amp.
POSTED: 02/01/2011 01:01pm

As for the actual review. Seems like a pretty good amp for what your going for. Don't think I'd have much use for it myself though.
POSTED: 02/01/2011 08:37pm

This amp is amazing. People need to try it in store, it is definitely a huge step forward more than anything we've ever seen before. The FUSE interface is just like Amplitube in real time with your amp, and the tones you can get are the best I've ever heard. Seriously, you look at the competition for the same price, and they are toys compared to this. You can go deep and change the bias realtime and everything. F'ing amazing.
POSTED: 02/16/2011 12:11pm

For metal it kicks everything. The recto model on the Tube one is AWESOME.
But it is useless for anything lower gain, IMHO.
POSTED: 03/18/2011 08:58am

Wife got me this for a xmas present. I was astounded with what this amp can do for the price. I have gone through lots of amps over the years and this is definitely one of the best for what I do. Then I hooked it up to my laptop and a whole new world of sounds opened up. I have several modelling pedals and the Mustang provides the most authentic sounds so far.
POSTED: 03/18/2011 10:24pm

Got rid of my Vypyr 30 for the Mustang III. When you get the MIII dialed in properly it surpasses the Vypyr in regards to metal. I had a hard time getting anything like a full on Doom sound on my Vypyr that likens to Acid Horse or Acid Witch, and the MIII can do it easily. Just have to really dig into the settings and setting the volume levels properly.
POSTED: 03/22/2011 02:06pm

I love the constant tube vs solid state BS. You CAN NOT compare the two against each other unless your looking at the exact same head and cab but one with tubes and one solid state. A decent tube setup will probably run you close to $1000 I bought my mustang III for $309CAD. I opted for the mustang III over the Line 6 Spider IV for a couple reasons

- Fender = 100W, Line 6 = 75W
- Fender has more presets/adjusability
- Fender after taxes was $150 less then the Line 6 before taxes.
- Fender came with Fuze software, Ableton Live 8 Lite and AmpliTube programs.

Tube amps are nice if you can afford them, but they aren't going to make you some awesome kick ass player. For jamming at home or recording onto my computer this Mustang III will do it better then anyone.
POSTED: 04/06/2011 03:49pm

Tribe1, Its funny you mentioned the Vox NT. I've been playing mainly acoustics but wanted to get into electrics so I got the Mustang III. At first I thought I was way over my head with all the effects so I also got a Night Train15. Well after a weekend that I had free, I was able to mess around with the Mustang. Long story short, I took the Night Trin back and now just youse the Mustang III. I think it sounds better and with more options. The Night Train 15 is a great amp but for the 700 bucks for the combo I think my mustang for 259.00 is great
POSTED: 07/01/2011 08:45am

They're completely different animals... it depends on what you need it for. I bought my Mustang III for practice/gigging with band/home. If you want to play at home, a valve amp may not be a good idea, since it needs hi-volumes to saturate the valves and get good distorsions.
POSTED: 08/23/2011 08:15am

Tube or not, if the amp sounds good then it's a good amp. I hate it when people say that it's tube or it will sound like crap. But I believe that a good solid state amp can be as good as a good tube amp. Don't judge products before trying them.

Digital modeling is not my thing (I want the amp to have one to three sounds that you can tweak instead of 50 different sounds) and I've not played through Mustang but if it's good then it's good. And it's everybody's own opinion.
POSTED: 08/23/2011 10:43am

I agree there are quite a few good SS amps. But there's no way an SS amp could sound like an all-tube: it's not a matter of fanciness, it's a matter of physics. When saturated, transitors react completely different from tubes: they 'break' the sound, instead of making it round and mellow. SS amps lack harmonics when distorted and, generally, they sound 'colder' and more 'artificial' than all-tubes. Last but not least, they have a tendency of making every guitar sound the same, thus taming its character and own tonal virtues. That's why pros always use all-tubes. Of course, for bedroom practice it is better to choose an SS, unless you live alone in a manor 50 km away from any other form of human living. But I might suggest you some Vox, Marshall or Orange amps, all-tube and low-wattage, that are an ideal solution for your bedroom... Of course, in case you really care about your sound.
POSTED: 08/26/2011 12:01pm

With the way modeling amps are anymore, I doubt if10 out of a hundred people could consistently identify tube vs SS. I have always been a tube guy, but I bought a Mustang V head and wow! I don't even bring my foot pedals anymore. Lighter, more versatile, no tube expense, no warming up or cooling off, no biasing, no tube rattle or microphonics, and I can fool most all of my tube buddies. I don't care what people play but I would say in most cases improving skills will improve your tone more than tube over a good SS modeler. i.e. mustangs.
And you can have just 3 or 4 tones to tweak if that is what you want.
POSTED: 12/13/2011 03:39pm

I went to a guitar store with my mate to try out some lower priced modelling amps a few weeks ago. He's very much a beginner, so I thought an amp that could do a bit of everything, be loud enough for small gigs and quiet enough for home use would be the best option. I recommended to him the Vox VT20+ and we tried that out. In store I wasn't actually that impressed. We then tried the Mustang II, and my god, that thing sounded excellent. We were using a mid range Fender Strat with what felt like really old strings, and the cleans were still unreal. I was then really surprised that the overdrive and distortion settings were great too. I'm a fan of tubes and all that, but this amp is the real deal. I've not heard such a clarity from an amp at such a low price. I don't need another amp and I'm thinking of buying one. If you're not a tube snob, you will appreciate the Mustang series.
POSTED: 04/27/2012 06:51am

I used to own a Mustang II. I traded it in for an Egnater Tweaker 40 (Tube). I don't gig, and I can't turn it up loud enough to activate overdriven breakup. Plus, I miss my headphone jack. I'm trading it all in for a Mustang III tomorrow.
POSTED: 03/09/2013 01:36am
