Kinda disagree with ya there dude. I bought a Blackstar 60 Watt Venue Combo a couple of months ago and sent it back within 3 days, couldn't get a good distortion sound out of it, had no crunch at all. Incidently, I bought a Marshall JVM 50 Watt Combo instead and think it's so much better than the Blackstar. Just my opinion of course, but the Marshall is FAR more versatile.
POSTED: 03/09/2011 11:46am

I have the stage 60 and it took me a lot of messing around to get a good tone out of it, the knobs act in kinda weird ways but you can get some great distortion out of it.
POSTED: 03/09/2011 05:43pm

Excellent practice amp, but be warned that it's not an All-Tube Signal Path. Some pretty obvious clipping diodes in the schematic. Only way a 1-watt amp can have as much gain as the HT-1 does.

Therefore it's actually a hybrid. Just a particularly... odd type of hybrid. The HT-5 does the same to a certain degree.
POSTED: 03/10/2011 12:47am

A good little tone machine for heavy rock players for next to nothing.

Nice full cleans, you can really push the tubes on the clean channel for a nice real crunchy overdrive. The distortion channel also gets nice and heavy so it can do classic metal and thrash metal nicely.

I think a cab would really let it open up. I got the HT-1, and the internal speaker does the job, better than what I had but it's obviously not going to keep up with heavy riffs in drop C with tons of bass and gain through it. However, the HT-1 can be used as a head and is one of the cheapest entry points into valves.

It's also more than loud enough for home. I just cranked it the first day and my right ear was squealing all night XD. The cleans don't go very loud, not a lot of breakup there, usable for the bedroom though as long as others aren't making too much noise nearby, but overdriven it can cause some damage.

The materials, feel and look of it all suggest solid quality. Better than you'd expect for the money, and the thing's heavier than it looks.

So yeah in short... need a practice amp for harder rock, but sick of all the all you can eat digital stuff? Want something that sounds natural and has it's own unique tone? Want a fun little toy? Then it's worth a look.

Full review after I've had a chance to get to know it a bit more.
POSTED: 05/03/2011 07:13am

As good a tone as you're going to get in a starter amp if you're a rock and metal player.

Still want to try it through a cab to see how much of a difference it makes but it's loud distorted.

If you do a lot of clean stuff or want something that can take pedals a bit better, the HT-5 might be a better look, but it's significantly more expensive and you may have more options at that price point.

As a practice amp, the HT1 sounds great.
POSTED: 07/12/2011 11:18pm

Something I forgot to test for my review: the overdrive channel on the HT-1 actually sounds a lot better if you just route the headphone out directly into studio monitors. Sadly Blackstar didn't think to just make cabinet emulation a switch that could apply to the 8" combo speaker and the headphone out!
POSTED: 07/14/2011 01:45am

I bought the head version H1R and run it with my 4x12 KranK revolution cab and it sound awesome. i can crank it up un betroom and no one want to kill me. grab EMG's pickups and a good cab and you can play loud metal. the clean is a fat tone but do the job, adding the reverb correct the thing a little bit. worth my money. the 5w version is a little too loud for home (appartement or bedroom)but have more features.
POSTED: 09/06/2011 10:55pm

larrykboydston

larrykboydston here. First i'd like to say the amp sounds great. That's when it plays at all. My first Ht-1R "died' at 5 months, never having really been "cranked up'. I soon found out that under warranty
the "entry level amp" is not fixed, but "trashed" and replaced with a new one. weeks later I recieved my second new amp. The reverb was non-functional. I had been in touch with Bruce Kier, head engineer, Blackstar Amplification twice before getting the second bad amp. When I e-mailed Blackstar about the
failure of their "automated end of line quality checkwith regerds to my non-functional reverb, there was, and has been no reply since. After almost 2 months I received my third new amp. When I got it home,
after my dealer assured me that they hjad checked this one out themselves, I noticed a "clunk' when I set it down. i could hear and feel something large and loose on the inside. I figured this time that some Chinese assembler had left a wrench or some other tool on the oinside. Silly me ! The speaker was attached by only one of the 4 threaded studs. The one that was attached was only tightened down half of the way. There were no signs of any lost nuts for tyhe other three studs. How that speaker got banged around in shipping without puncturing the cone I'll never know. This time I told myself screw the warranty, and I fixed the damned thing myself. The speaker mounts to cheap fiber board
and was a bitch to work with. I used plenty of glue and screw. Beware if you take the back/control panel off. Besides the 9 screws in the back, there are two hidden screws. They go through the handle bracket, closest to the back of the amp. I did notice that iinstead of the cheap Sovteks that were in the first two amps, they had switched to TADS. Now the only problem is that the clean channel has less than half of the volume as the high gain channel. This amp made
amp of the year(NAMM). Entry level ? I paid $300.00 for the first one. Even an "entry level" Chevrolet is expected to function, not to mention be fully assembled. I would bet the amp that made amp of the year was a real special pick. I couldn't believe the Chinese assembler or inspector signed his name to the one with the "dangling" speaker. It was sold to me as a "tube amp". I know enough to have realized that it was a hybrid. Yea, "hybrid". Two tubes and...1 X 28 pin I.C.,(un-identifiable by it's numbers), 7 x 8 pin
un-marked I.C.'s, small signal transistors, and 2 X STK 830 power transistors(which I haven't been able to find out squat about. That ain't just to run the reverb and the I.S.F. OH, I almost forgot. When I opened the third amp up, the 12ax7 was not but barely plugged in. The bail was not fastened and i can't believe that the tube didn't arc at the socket when tested. That's if they did test it, which I wouldn't care to bet on. I'm going to dump the "bomb" waiting to blow, and build an all tube MOD 102 kit that uses all tubes. It
'll be hand wired without the Oriental touch. Class A,
S.E., cathode biased, 12axy pre-amp and EL-84 output.
Cost is $250.00. The Blackstar folks should be ashamed.
I can see anybody making a lemon, but one customer getting three in a row, and having an amp approximately one half of the year is crap. My review.....Buyer Beware. If you are a praying man.....

strange what you are saying.. i have ordered this amp without hearing it, but read loads of reviews on it. I dont think you can find anyone on the internet having same kind of problems that you had. Mine sounds great, sturdy, small, dont care about ICs, but sounds definitely TUBE, not like just some digital modeling thing.. best deal i have ever made!
POSTED: 09/15/2012 03:33pm

good little amp for home practice, my favorite setting is the clean channel with the gain on full, and the isf fully to the british side, good for classic rock too, the distorted channel can pull off some 80's metal too. for a tiny little practice amp this sounds pretty good.
POSTED: 12/01/2012 09:37am

I've really had my eye on this little practice amp for a while. I'm just wondering if you could get a Pantera/ Megadeth kinda distortion on the HT-1 without a pedal?
