I dunno about the 4x10, but a tubescreamer into the Deville 2x12 sounds absolutely incredible for a really driving hard rock tone (with the right guitar of course) I don't own one yeat (just played a mates 2x12) but I'm saving up as we speak for the 4x10 and a tubescreamer, I just fell in love with the cleans and the way it sounds with the TS.
POSTED: 12/06/2006 07:51am

i just got the 4x10 after trying out both that and the 2x12. the 4x10 just sounded a bit warmer, but there wasn't a huge difference in sounds.
POSTED: 01/07/2008 06:16am

If you are looking for that type of tone, you definitely want to either overdrive the clean channel with a ts-808 (or something with similar qualities) or just crank the clean channel. The overdrive on this amp is really intense and loud as hell and I only use it when I want to use the wah pedal. The clean channel on this amp has that warm + crisp + ringy tone.
POSTED: 01/12/2008 06:12pm

I have this amp, and its ridiculous. if you put it on the drive setting, crank the bass and midrange, but set the drive to verrrrry low (like 1.5), it has a pretty clean but grainy sound that's very tube sounding. then hit your boss os-2 overdrive/distortion pedal, and youve got an all-tube, warm, heavy sound that puts this-price-range marshalls to shame. i play pretty much everything (i was jamming dragonforce then switched to velvet revolver this morning ) and between this amp and my os-2, i can sound like anybody.
POSTED: 01/27/2008 02:49pm

Just bought one last week. It is sweet. Amazing cleans. That's what I look for. I can get a pedal to make anything dirty but I have to start with a good clean sound. The spring reverb (long tank) is very lush almost too thick but you can turn the level down. BTW, this baby is LOUD! Sweet controllable feedback even at lower volumes (facing the amp). The 410 has a much sweeter sound than the 212. You can find 212s at pawnshops every day of the year. You rarely see a 410, unless someone has abused it.
POSTED: 04/03/2008 09:55am

To my ears, the 2x12 is a darker sounding amp than the 4x10. The 4x10 has better high-end sparkle. Again, this is just to my ears.
POSTED: 05/10/2008 02:18pm

Other than that, this amp is amazing. Beautiful, sparkling and warm clean tones, and with a good overdrive or distortion pedal, you can get some really lush, warm overdrives, too. Excellent amp. I have played few that match up to this one.
POSTED: 06/27/2008 11:57am

Just got my 4x10 three weeks ago and have practiced and gigged with it - it has tone for days and kept up with my partner's Randall half stack (T2 or V2 - not sure). The reactions I got from just taking off the amp cover were great (lots of wows!), it got even better when I cranked it up and started in on Zep's "The Ocean" - even I was impressed with the sound this amp makes.
POSTED: 01/13/2009 10:03am

I work in a music store and we got one of these in. The clean tone is what you can expect from a fender tube amp, which is freaking sweet, and the drive is a real broken up sort of sounding distortion. Great for not just blues and clasic rock but can even fit that sort of ruff 90's grunge. But yeah chuck a pedal in front of this amp and you can easly go heavier. The tubes seem to boost the pedals quality and creates a really full surounding sound. Thinking bout getting one. just a matter of money. Sick as amp though.
POSTED: 04/17/2009 08:28am

This amp is mediocre at best. Would never purchase new. I bought a used one so I could have something small for school (I am a music student), but it is not really that small (definitely kind of a beast). It is heavy as hell; wheels or a portable dolly would be necessary. Cleans are good but not as sparkly and responsive as other better quality fenders. Bass response is pretty horrible and almost farty at times. The reverb is amazing. Tone controls are pretty responsive but it is difficult to make this amp do more than a few different things. Good for some styles of music, definitely not all. Would never buy again and would almost be happy is someone stole it because it would give me an excuse to buy a new amp. If you want a good sound and you want fender choose one of their other amps because they are all better than this one.
POSTED: 11/04/2009 09:40pm

this amp is the shit!this amp can battle any half stack and any other brand easyly.i use a fender hot rod deville 410 hooked up to an extra 412 cab with celestions(i highly recommend it sounds ammmmmaaaazing)and i use an sg custom with emgs hooked up to a fulltone ocd pedal, the sounds of this combination are awsome!!!!!crystal clean and really loud wich i love and when i need to play really heavy stuff the ocd is there ive never been a fan of pedals but the deville takes pedals better than 89% of other amps out there.i love this amp, this amp can seriously take any style of music you throw at it even heavy metal, youll need a good pedal though because the gain on the devilles suck!!at least i think so...i know this is not a marshall but i can make it sound like it with my ocd pedal so i can have the best of both worlds..fender clean and british distortion.
POSTED: 10/29/2011 09:44pm

I got one of these little fire breathing beasts for $300 used...it has a broken #1 input jack and did not come with the footswitch, but other than that it's in great shape. VERY loud, huge clean tone, and the drive/more drive channel isn't as bad as everyone's making it out to be...especially since the recommended fix for the gritty tone of this ALL TUBE AMP (in fairness, the rectifier *is* solid state) is to put a solid state drive pedal in front of it for more "tube like" drive...am I the only one who sees the bass ackwardness of this? Not that I feel it's necessary, but I plan on getting a 12AX7 powered Behringer Vintage Tube Monster OD pedal to get that extra push...it'd be nice to have a tube driven top end boost, and it has 3 way EQ for more tonal flexibility...kinda like an additional channel on this 2 1/2 channel tube beast...you can't beat that natural tube grind, especially for $60! Back to the amp...great reverb, killer cleans (4x10 sparkle for days), nice drive, the more drive is a bit gritty but still very usable...not a metal amp by any stretch, but it's an overall great amp (especially for what I paid for it)..can't wait to see how it sounds with a 2x12 extention cab!
POSTED: 03/24/2013 08:32pm
