I'll have to check out the album simply because of that.
Plus Blackadder was awesome.
POSTED: 06/21/2011 09:17am

No mention of Bertie Wooster? Another TV outing for his piano playing. I watched the documentary on the making of the album - pretty boring if your your not into jazz/blues from the early 20th century.
POSTED: 06/21/2011 09:38am

to give this album less than an 8 is stupid. its a fantastic, genuine blues album from someone who has loved and been involved in the genre his whole life. People will say 'you only like it because it's hugh', but the truth is, they only hate it because its hugh
POSTED: 06/21/2011 11:49am

Quite well written, Mr. NeonBlueAlex.

I haven't really listened to this album but, being a huge fan of House MD, I'm really impressed by the fact that this guy play both the guitar and the piano very well, in addition to being a great actor and apparently writer too. How is it that some people just sleep their way through life, just getting by... And some people are Hugh Laurie.
POSTED: 06/21/2011 03:56pm

I agree with one of the comments that the rating should be higher. At least an 8 if not a 9. Speaking from my personal experience with the instrument arrangement, I found it fascinating, almost like the experience of seeing an impressionist painting. The arrangement added beautiful musical effects. The switching from guitar to piano seems appropriate to me because of the mood of the pieces. Hugh Laurie's vocal production seemed appropriate for the style of music he was singing. I recall hearing him sing a snippet of a Gilbert and Sullivan song during the premiere episode of Season 6 (I am betraying that I am a die-hard house fan here) but I recall he did actually sound as if he had had some vocal training but I could be mistaken). In any case, I was very interested in the thoughtful way you analyzed each aspect of the cd and learned something about how to write a good, helpful review as well as some stylistic insights about blues music. So thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
POSTED: 06/22/2011 07:59am
