I really do prefer this to the newer Gibson models. The new Gibson SGs have terrible fat and unwieldy necks, this one is not so fat and very comfortable. The Epiphone is less prone to neck dives as the Gibson one as well. Of course the Gibson one sounds better, but with a few hundred dollars you could put burstbuckers or classic 57's or seymour duncans in it and make it sound almost identical. Epiphone is a much better value IMO
POSTED: 08/19/2011 12:58pm

Exactly. I just bought an Epi Korina Explorer as a project guitar. I'm going to replace the pickups, tuners, electronics and nut on it and, after it's set up, the total cost will still be $400-500 less than the cheapest Gibby Explorer.
POSTED: 08/20/2011 05:38am

Personnally, I own a SG, but only for the look of it! That's great, I mean, I know Epiphone can make a guitar THE EXACT same thing. Reading the summary taken from epiphone's web site, they use the same wood, same bridge. Maybe the pickups are different, but that guitar should really sound approximatly as mine. I have a Standard SG that I bought for 1200$. Any way, I didnt have ANY problem with it, I guess that why I paid that much (thought its not really much for an SG)... Im sure it plays really well! Great review btw!
POSTED: 08/20/2011 11:27pm

I have this guitar and its awesome. I play rock and blues and get a fantastic tone from it using a Marshall JTM60 valve amp. I got mine new for a very good price of £169 3 years ago and it has been a great workhorse of a guitar. Its a great guitar for those of us who cannot yet afford a gibson. The one downside I can think of is that the finish seems to scratch quite easily but when it does, it isnt that noticeable.
POSTED: 08/21/2011 07:49am

Replaced the bridge with a slightly heavier unit, really seemed to help a lot, the tone seems to hit a bit harder, if that makes sense. Also has a kill switch for some Morello fun. Try a a P90 in the neck, just do it. So sweet.
POSTED: 08/22/2011 05:09am

Well, the gloss finish is 80% of this guitar's look. And, since we speak about poor man's Gibson, it has to look at least decent, not like a trimmed-off copy, as the faded version actually looks like...
But ratings here at the UG are irrelevant anyway. You can actually notice copy guitars made in China, Indonesia, Vietnam etc. getting higher ratings than original Fenders or Gibsons.
POSTED: 09/13/2011 11:45am

The gloss cherry sg-400 streets for only $350...the faded cherry streets for $300...the $50 difference is the smallest difference between "faded" or "worn" and "gloss" of any model Gibson/Epi makes. Gibson SG faded streets for $700, the glossy version is $1l00, $400 more but you do also get pup covers and trap inlays instead of dots. Gibson Flying V is $250 price difference, $950 vs $1200, for gloss. Vintage brown worn SG-400s are ok,and there is no gloss brown, but if you want cherry color, go for the gloss its worth the extra fifty.
You can actually notice copy guitars made in China, Indonesia, Vietnam etc. getting higher ratings than original Fenders or Gibsons.

And it never occurred to you that the ratings on UG might be relative to the price of the guitar in question? No? Oh dear...
POSTED: 01/19/2012 10:06pm

Just put a deposit on one of these in my local guitar shop. Tried it in store and love it. Each pick up has its own voice which is great. On the rhythm pickup you get a nice warm feel which is pefect for playing Santana. It will officialy be mine in 2 weeks and i cant wait.
POSTED: 10/18/2012 08:58am

I want to add a few quick comments to my review of this guitar.

I have now had this guitar for four months and feel i have started unlocking its true potential.

1) Since buying this i have dropped it thanks to a poorly made strap. I feared the worst until i picked it up. Instead of finding a snapped bpdy i discovered that only the tone knob had become crooked and the jack needed realinging by milliseconds.

Impressive to me.

2) also i have just begun to realise how fat sounding AND fast it is when playing. Its body has made it really easy for me to learn sweep and alternate picking.

The fat sound creates the true classic rock sound i crave in my playing and i am completely blown away.

Since owning this i have moved away from playing Slipknot/Pantera etc. Ive embraced my love of Blues,Country and classic Rock.

I give this guitar a 10. I dont know how you update reviews so this is the best i could do. Thanks
POSTED: 01/23/2013 08:27am
