I read the first review...as soon as I read "wet the appetite", I knew I was going to be listening to drivel (it's whet btw, you can't "wet" an appetite). Knights of Cydonia is not "old Muse" btw. The new album sucks baws.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 09:05am

It's not a terrible album, but in my opinion it's their weakest release. It's a half baked album. It sounds as if it's building up to something special, but before you know it, you're listening to the last track.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 09:17am

It's a great album in general, just not a great Muse album. Muse can't ever return to their Showbiz or Origin days but what they are doing now is at least decent and worth a listen. I'd rather they just did what they want and produce a few solid tracks each album like they do than become a tribute band to their early work.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 10:54am

The thing about Muse fans is that they seem to find an excuse for everything bad they make. I like Muse; although Resistance and this one are kind of bad. Yes, both have a couple of good songs, but not enough to make them good albums. What really irritates me is the fact that they say "Oh they changed their sound but they're still amazing" or "I first didn't like it, but this song is a grower" while listening to that god-awful "Madness" song. Face it, if that song was done by any other artist you didn't even know, you wouldn't give a **** about it. That's what happens with 80% of Resistance or The 2nd Law, and that's what pisses me off about those albums and Muse's fanbase.

I know I should respect everyone's opinions, and I usually do, but these people who blindly follow bands really irritate me.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 12:33pm

Being a fan (or "true fan", "big fan", whatever you want to call it) =/= liking. I'm not into all their albums, but I own the ones I'm into. It's also certainly different from "a band you know nothing about".

I don't feel people should review the album relatively to their opinion on the older work of the artist. In my opinion, you need to look at the album with quite a clean slate. If you know that an album won't be in the same style as previous work, why judge it negatively on behalf of that? That just seems rather stupid to me.

About the album itself: I think it's one of their better albums. It's got a few "weaker" tracks (read: unsustainable and big freeze), but also a few small masterpieces. A lot of instrumental layers, and Bellamy pumps his vocals out with great range and power as always. Great riffing and a good concept.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 04:02pm

very undeserved score. this album is great. The problem is most of you are judging this album based on what you think it should be, not what it is. Since this is ultimate guitar, the majority of you are probably metal heads who don't understand anything outside chuga chuga music. it's unfair to blast a great recording because you're butt hurt that it's not the same thing as showbiz or origin of symmetry.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 04:28pm

You're foolish. if someone legitimately likes a song, why should you care? what makes your opinion more important than anybody else? it's a good album, a great album in fact. But muse has grown out of your tastes. their not the same band they were when they started. You also can't make assumptions like, "if someone else made it you wouldn't care about it." That shits never happened, but muse made this song and i like it. Madness has a U2 flavor to it and i like U2. Your opinion doesn't matter and neither does mine, but i feel i have to call you out on your bullshit anyway.
POSTED: 09/28/2012 04:36pm

I hate how anyone that hates muse calls their fans, "fanboys." First of all, If I say that I love this album, it does not mean that I'm a fanboy. I like this style, and always have. They just never made muse songs with this style. Now that they are getting better by expanding their horizons, people jump up their throats and say it sucks. Not only that, but I get attacked for saying that I love the album.

To anyone that is even reading this, I provided my side of the argument. What gives you the right to hate on my opinion?
POSTED: 09/28/2012 04:37pm

Really? We're doing this? You're saying as an absolute that nobody who ever listens to Muse would be bothered about Madness if it wasn't made by Muse. You know this for certain. Cos it sounds a bit like you're stating your opinion as fact. I'm as underwhelmed as most other people with Muse's last 2 albums, but Madness is a great, inventive pop song.
POSTED: 09/29/2012 08:28am

I love how people say that this album is somehow a risk or an "evolution" of their sound, since when was trying to appeal to a mainstream audience a risk? Haha seems like the opposite of a risk to me. Muse is trying to cash in on the dub phase, which is fine; and honestly I don't even hate the way they've used dub-step. It's actually one of the best aspects of the album even though I typically have zero interest in listening to dub-step. I just don't think the album is any good, it has nothing to do with this not being OOS or Showbiz, I actually liked most of their last album too, this one just isn't very good imo. There are bits and stretches of song's that I like but the only song that I like from start to finish is Animals, and even that song could have been better (maybe one of muse's best songs) but the chorus was a bit of a let down (due to that pesky overused united states of Eurasia type chord progression.). To those who think you shouldn't compare this album to previous albums, I say you are morons. Why shouldn't I hold them to the standard of their previous work? Isn't it kind of weak, or dare I say fanboyish to suggest that I shouldn't take into account previous works or their clear musical genious on other albums, into consideration when deciding if I like this album? In the end this album sounds more like a Bono/Queen/dub-step knockoff/mainstream appeal then it does a Muse album. The fact that Supremacy was clearly made in the James Bond Vein, and begs to be in the new Bond film is all you need to know about this album.
POSTED: 09/29/2012 08:38pm

I agree in principle, but I think you're being a bit presumptious. I'm a long-term Muse fan who's still making his mind up over the album, but I know one thing for certain: at first I didn't like Madness, but it really has grown on me. The rest of the album is hit(hugely)-and-miss(again, hugely ) for me, but in Madness's case I have a legitimate opinion that runs counter to your theory. So change it, bitch.
POSTED: 09/30/2012 01:12pm

I agree that reviews should always be as objective as possible. However, that's not to say that someone can't dislike this album objectively. I for one like it, but parts of it let me down, and I can understand how an impartial listener may dislike it. Fact is, everyone is going to compare this album to what they know of music and the music they like - including Muse fans - so you're never going to reach total objectivity in a review of it. The best you can hope for is that people are educated, clued up and sensible enough to judge the album as objectively as they can.
POSTED: 09/30/2012 01:18pm

The entire Resistance album was amazing. I can tell a lot of work was put into each song and it was a great album. I don't know who you're are talking about.

This album was still a good album, however, it was the first album that I've ever rated a song 4 stars on in my Windows Media Library. I loved a lot of songs and every song is a good song. I didn't like about 4 of the songs but the fact is they are STILL GOOD SONGS.

Madness is strange, but it's a good song. The band wanted to try something new, stop being a whiny little ****.
POSTED: 10/08/2012 09:00am

Here's the thing, folks - Muse's own sound is long gone, and it's not coming back. Instead of incorporating other genres into their own style but still being distinctly Muse, they've become a mere cover band. There's no more 'Hmm this has got a bit of flamenco in it', or 'I hear The Shadows in the this one', it's 'Fucking hell is this a U2 cover or what?', or 'Did Brian May write this?'. They've crossed the line between influence and emulation.

Now i won't lie, there have been a couple of songs on the past two albums i've really enjoyed. Animals, MK Ultra, even Madness was quite nice, but the rest of it doesn't gel with their back catalogue. If Animals was on Origin of Symmetry, i think it'd fit in quite well, maybe as a back to back with Screenager. MK Ultra is a bit of an Exo Politics twin. They clearly know how to write good music still, but they're lending too heavily from their influences.
POSTED: 10/08/2012 10:23am

I donīt like what Bellamy is doing with his voice in songs like Follow Me, it just sounds weird. And iīm not too fond of madness, follow me, liquid state and explorers.
Ignore the fanboy-ish name, but I really don't get the hate. Yes, people say this is a "filler" album with only a couple of great tracks, and that the fans only listen to it because it's Muse and if it was from any other band we wouldn't listen to it, and that the songs are "growing" on us meaning we don't actually like them. Seriously, I was heavily disappointed on my first listen of the album. I really only liked Supremacy. Now after listening to it multiple times I must say the tracks do stand out more, such as Madness, Panic Station, Animals, Big Freeze and Save Me. Just because you don't like a couple of songs they did doesn't mean Muse are completely in a wrong direction, or the whole album is complete garbage. Personally this album is a complete step up from The Resistance (from which I only really listen to Resistance and Exogenesis, occasional MK Ultra) since I'd go out of my way to listen to more of these songs rather than forcing myself to like them as we all did whilst in denial from The Resistance. Just my opinion.
POSTED: 10/09/2012 05:35am

Prime example why people are downloading instead of buying... I've loved every album from Muse and to be honest I want my money back Ģ60 (Special collective Edition) down the drain and why should I have to suffer and be out of pocket! when I have supported in buying there product and not going to lisen to it?... I feel like doing what Stan and Kenny did in 'The Passion' on SOUTHPARK .. rules need to be changed that artist have to take responsibility for the rubbish they call music and should offer refunds like any other business do if a product is not attemptable this album is not the Muse I recognise I would say Supremacy and Follow are the best songs on the album and would consider buying at a later date if the price is right!
POSTED: 10/09/2012 07:58am

Those comments you seem to quote from other fans are, in my opinion, true. I didn't know what to think of Madness or some of the other songs on the album, but I did feel they grew on me. I had the exact same feeling when I listened to Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" for the first time but I think about everyone agrees it's one of the best Zep songs ever, and that's says something. If you think Resistance and 2nd Law are rubbish, then just don't listen to them and don't go to the Muse concerts. I don't think it's their best album to date either, but it's a good album all the same. And at any rate way better than much of the shit that's brought out by, for example One Direction who already compare themselves to the Fab Four.
POSTED: 10/11/2012 05:59am

The whole album has a sense of doom. Survivals title explains itself, he will survive the end of the world. Explorers, all the land is owned, they reached the Earths limits so he wants to leave. Panic station, wouldn't you panic if the world was about to end? Follow me, I will bring you to safety. Save me... Pretty self explanatory. Unsustainable, the whole facts and reality behind the scenes. (Although the science might be false). All the songs have a deeper sense of the worlds doom, each with a unique point of view. Although I don't understand them completely...
The "mess" I hear about in unsustainable represents the final end. The chaos of it all. The tiny insane spot surrounded by the universe, trying to be heard. My favorite, next to panic station. Survival has a great sense of an eery determination to survive it all.
POSTED: 05/10/2013 01:11pm
