Chili Peppers' Flea Teaching Thom Yorke To Surf?
In a lengthy interview with the Guardian newspaper, Thom Yorke has revealed that Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist and Atoms For Peace collaborator Flea has been teaching him to surf. And while, by his own admission, he is still "pretty crap at it", he states that he finds it a useful technique for relaxation: "I used always to try to force things, in the studio," he says. "But it's like, you can sit out there on a board for ages waiting for the right wave to come along. You can't get angry about it. You know it will happen eventually and you start to understand the waiting itself might be part of it. Part of the fun... " The singer also reflected on the introspection of his lyrics, and how he has been looking outward, rather than inward since Radiohead's 2000 album "Kid A": "To begin with, writing songs was my way of dealing with shit. Early on it was all, 'Come inside my head and look at me'," he says. "But that sort of thing doesn't seem appropriate now. Tortured often seems the only way to do things early on, but that in itself becomes tired. By the time we were doing Kid A I didn't feel I was writing about myself at all. I was chopping up lines and pulling them out of a hat. They were emotional but they weren't anything to do with me." The interview coincides with the announcement that Flea's day job band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, will be performing at this year's Orion Music Festival, curated by Metallica. The line-up will also feature Foals and Deftones alongside the Bay Area thrash giants. Metallica and Flea themselves joined forces back in 2008, when the Chilis bassist joined the band on stage for a rendition of Fight Fire With Fire in LA:
