Most Students Study Finnish Because of Metal, Claims Latest Research
Recent research conducted among the University of Vienna students came up with some rather interesting results, revealing that a vast majority of Finnish language students, a whopping 97 percent to be precise, is in fact studying because of their love of metal music. According to the YLE report, the students are willing to cope with one of the most complex languages in order to better understand their favorite artists, naming Children of Bodom, Nightwish, HIM, Lordi and Stratovarius some of the most influential figures. "For 97 percent of them, the primary target of interest was heavy metal music. This somewhat surprised us," said Marjut Vehkanen, Secretary General of the Helsinki-based Centre for International Mobility. "There's a lot to memorize at first, but if you study hard in the beginning, then you'll find it's a very logical language." A Norwegian professor located in Italy, Siri Nergaard, told the Wall Street Journal back in June that "it's quite a well-known phenomenon that students in Italy study Norwegian because they're interested in metal," only further supporting the latest research claims. Choosing a university or a specific studies program can often prove as one of life's crucial decisions, only showing just what kind of impact can metal music have on its fans. Studies in Finnish are currently available at over 100 universities in around 30 countries around the globe.
