Rock icons Nirvana
officially were announced among 2014 inductees for the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Announced late last night (December 16), the list of inducted artists
also includes former Genesis
frontman and renowned solo performer Peter Gabriel
, Bruce Springsteen
's E Street Band
, Cat Stevens
, Hall and Oates
, Linda Ronstadt
, Andrew Loog Oldham
and Brian Epstein
remain among the nominees that didn't make it this year. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 10 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Ironically, KISS bassist Gene Simmons stated
earlier in October that Nirvana mainman Kurt Cobain
simply cannot be considered as a rock icon due to lack of groundbreaking material. "What, just 'cause you died that makes you an icon?"
Gene asked. "No, no."
As reported, KISS won this year's Hall of Fame fan vote. Singer/guitarist Paul Stanley
was quite vocal about the institution, giving it a decent bashing during a recent Huffington Post
chat. "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is marketing,"
he said. "You've got a bunch of faceless people in a back room who trademark a name that sounds very official. Well, if you had thought of it first, you would have been the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I am one of the biggest Laura Nyro fans. I still listen to that stuff incessantly. Laura Nyro does not belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Songwriter Hall of Fame? Absolutely.
"It's absurd for anybody to look around and hear the acts and artists who cite us as an inspiration, and then tell me that we're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I would certainly accept on their (the fans) behalf because it seems to be a major sore spot for them, but I don't need the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
Sharing a similar stance, Simmons added during a separate Rolling Stone
interview: "It's become a joke. We've been thinking about it and the answer is simply, 'We'll just buy it and fire everybody.' In all seriousness for the fans, for something to be called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is such an insult to Madonna, Blondie ... Who the f--k knows what other disco act is in there? It's an insult to them because they don't get to be in the 'Dance of Fame,' because that's what they do. They're legitimate dance, disco artists. They don't belong in rock and roll."
