UG readers placed their votes in our Wednesday question, which ended up with the biggest comment threads we've ever seen on this site. You had us in stitches laughing at some of the funnier replies, and there were plenty of great guitarist nominations too.
We stacked up your votes and nominations, and as expected, you pulled off a definitive list of the greatest rock guitarists ever. There were a few surprise omissions - where is Slash? Steve Vai? Joe Satriani? How about Gary Moore or BB King? They deserve an honorable mention, but your votes say they don't make the cut. Consider it done!
It's a serious list this week, but some of your joke entries were so funny that we decided to give them their own top 10 too. Check out our alternative list of Top 10 Rock Guitarists to see if your joke entry made the cut!
For now, it's time to put your feet up, tune in to YouTube, and rock out.
10. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
The Iron Man is often credited with founding metal, but fate played a big part in defining his sound. An accident at a sheet metal factory on his last day of work resulted in Tony losing the tips of two fingers, and he almost gave up playing - but was inspired to return. Tony tuned his guitar strings down to relieve the tension on his fingers, but the resulting deep sound was so huge that it became a template for metal guitarists ever since.
9. Eric Clapton
How many people can say they've been inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame three times? No-one but Eric, who made it with Cream, The Yardbirds and as a solo artist. If you think that's good, he's also earned 17 Grammy awards and was honoured by the Queen of England for his services to music.
8. John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
If there were a chart for 'top 10 shredders', John would probably rank in every single place. He loves writing on a seven-string guitar to allow enough range for both heavy riffing and crazy solo runs up the fretboard, and even writes many lyrics for Dream Theater records. If you think some of his work sounds like the score for old Sega soundtracks, don't be surprised - he once scored two tracks for the Saturn game "Digital Pinball".
7. Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
Inspired by Eric Clapton, a young Eddie learned all the Cream solos note-for-note and went on to be one of the most exciting new rock talents in the late 1970s. Even Jimmy Page flagged him out as "dazzling". This video does a great job of showcasing the attitude and ability that made Van Halen a household name.
6. John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
John is best known for his time in Red Hot Chili Peppers, but he's released twice as many solo albums and has collaborated with the likes of The Mars Volta and even breakcore artist Venetian Snares. But after first leaving RHCP in 1992, he battled drug addiction and lost all his teeth to a serious mouth infection. By 1998 he had recovered, and was invited back by Flea. "Nothing would make me happier in the world," he said.
5. Chuck Berry
Berry's career could have gone in a very different direction after his arrest for armed robbery in 1944. Instead, he set his life straight and became one of the founders of rock n' roll as we know it. Alright, he didn't quite set life straight — he was sent back to prison several times for offences including tax evasion - but he was one of the first inductees to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on its opening in 1986, and continues to perform today at the grand age of 85.
4. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
Rhoads made his mark on metal history as a guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, but met a tragic end in a plane crash in 1982. After a tour date in Tennessee, a pilot friend talked him into a short plane ride despite his fear of flying. Little did he know, the pilot was jacked up on cocaine and tried flying dangerously close to Ozzy's tour bus to freakout its inhabitants. On the third time they tried pulling this dangerous stunt, the left wing clipped the bus and sent the passengers to a fiery death.
This video shows Ozzy hearing an old master recording of Rhoads jamming over the end of a song. Watch Ozzy's face at 0:55 for what could be one of the funniest moments in YouTube history.
3. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
He might have a penchant for stealing blues riffs from poor defenceless musicians and passing them off as his own, but his ability can't be disputed. Whether he's wielding a pick or a violin bow, Page knows better than most how to make a guitar weep, scream and soar.
2. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Few have achieved as many record sales as Gilmour has through Pink Floyd. His strikingly introspective writing style and expressive lead guitar solos help mark him as one of the best rock guitarists of all time, but his musicianship doesn't stop there. He's a dab hand at bass, keyboards, banjo, harmonica, drums, and even saxophone - but they're all just a footnote next to his timeless blues-driven guitar work.
1. Jimi Hendrix
Did you expect anything less? Thanks to your votes, Jimi Hendrix is officially the UG greatest rock guitarist ever.
Jimi frequently tops similar lists in all corners of the media, and deservedly so. Where previous guitarists considered amp feedback a problem, Jimi instead chose to bend it to his will; where others favoured subtle guitar tones, Jimi cranked up the distortion and showed the world how expressive a driven guitar could be. Couple those skills with a wah-pedal and his mighty songwriting, and you've got a musician whose work will stand the test of time for generations.
Thanks to UG readers for placing their votes and helping us build the ultimate UG top 10 best rock guitarists of all time.
Remember to check out our alternative list of Top 10 Rock Guitarists to see whether fictional legends like Bill & Ted, Marty McFly and Skwisgaar Skwigelf made the cut!
Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get shit for this, but I'd like to see Thurston Moore, J Mascis or Jerry Cantrell in this list. Didn't really expected it to happen, though... but props for Iommi, Clapton and Gilmour.
F*ck yeah, John Frusciante! love that guy! David Gilmour too! My personal favorite guitarist ever is Tom Morello, but I can see why he didn't make this list. There are a lot of amazing guitarists in the world.
John Frusciante is a great guitarist and deserves to be on this list, BUT... better than EVH, Petrucci, Clapton, an Iommi? Come on...he's great but he didn't innovate quite as much like the others.

You're doing it wrong. You're suppose to call this list shit because he's not there.
Not bad UG, I might've swapped out Petrucci for someone else but I'm not the biggest Dream Theater fan. At first I was skeptical about Frusciante being on the list, but the more I think about it, the more he's an excellent choice. Switch Gilmour and Hendrix's positions, and I'd have nothing to complain about.
Frusciante plays with more passion and feeling than any guitarist. He's not my favourite guitarist, but he more than deserves to b on this list. Fuckin legend.
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
Steve Vai did guitar work for the music on Halo 2, millions of people know what he sounds like, even if they don't realize it.
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
Seriously? The guy is/was on the ****ing G3 and is a reference to 7/10 guitarists.
The problem with that is that a lot of virtuosos play with passion and techincal ability, I'm not saying these guys don't but Petrucci, Vai and Satriani all play with feeling.
I like John Frusciante, but he doesn't deserve to be on this list. I would also rank EVH a little lower. He innovated a lot, but I feel that Van Halen really isn't a very good band. I would swap Paul Gilbert with Frusciante. I think honorable mentions are also needed for Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alex Skolnick, Robert Johnson, Brian May, Joe Satriani, Chuck Shuldiner, Jerry Cantrell, Dave Mustaine, John Lee Hooker, and John Scofield.
No Jeff Beck? Richie Blackmore?? And has the world forgotten about an Irish lad by the name Rory Gallagher?? Hendrix credited him as the best guitarist in the world in an interview in the 60s. I mean there's so many great guitar players out there in the artistic community of music that I think you can't throw them on a 'list', there's just too many. And all are great respectfully. I think Hendrix deserves #1 though in this case as a he was so ahead of his time and his influence has touched EVERY guitarist to come after him.
this, UG proves once again that 90% of the site is beginner to intermediate level guitar players that vote for things they can play rather than anyone actually good
Steve Vai should definitely make the cut. The dude was writing scores for Frank Zappa at only 18 years old and used to challenge fans to bring whatever sheet music they could so that he could site read it, and flawlessly at that. Not to mention he's done work with so many other bands that its mind boggling, he seems to be the best guitarist that nobody knows about. That being said I think Randy should have to number 1 spot, Jimmy is a legend but since his time there have been much better players.
Jimi Hendrix is the MOST OVERRATED guitarist ever. Yes, he is great and extremely talented, but he isn't number one. Anyone can light a guitar on fire. Anyone can smash it on the ground. Anyone can add distortion and use a wah-wah pedal, which was was brought in by Cream and Eric Clapton. And most of all, anyone can play a guitar upside-down like Hendrix. Sure, the body is upside-down, but he reversed the nut and re-ordered the strings so it's still EADGBe even though the BODY is upside-down. Hendrix can be no. 2 or no. 3.
I've seen a ton of Vai, Satriani and Tremonti voting. I didn't see much people include Hendrix compared to the list. Voting was tainted by UG. Overall not a bad list, just not accurate with what was voted.
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
Are you mentally challenged? Vai played with David Lee Roth from 1986-1988 & Whitesnake from 1989-1990 when both of those bands were selling out 15,000 seat arenas on a nightly basis.
Ultimate fail.
this, UG proves once again that 90% of the site is beginner to intermediate level guitar players that vote for things they can play rather than anyone actually good
No, YOUR comments prove that you only care about virtuosos with little to no feel.
Solid list... usual suspects, but for good reason. I would have swapped Pettrucci for Jeff Loomis, but this is a Rock guitarist list, not q metal guitarist list.
I know that some people are saying that guys like Satch and Vai should be on here and the only reason they are not is because they were not as famous. And I think they are both great too ( I have seen Satch live). But I think if you are going to make a list like this then popularity should be a factor since you are only picking ten out of all guitarists.
I'm sick and tired of people who know next to nothing about guitar and rock history revering Hendrix like he's some kind of god, and mostly because he died prematurely. He really doesn't deserve nearly this much recognition. Technically, all he did was popularize what hundreds of garage bands have been experimenting with before him. Musically, all he did was wank the blues scale ad infinitum, most of his tracks being covers. He didn't come up with anything new, he just stood on the shoulders of lesser known artists and made a lot of noise, literally as well as figuratively.
Why's everyone complaining at Hendrix being first? Yes he's at the top of pretty much every greatest guitarist list ever, but bearing in mind that nobody can agree on the greatest guitarist ever, I'd say he deserves to be there. And I'm glad to see personal favourites like Randy Rhoads and Tony Iommi on there, even if I'm in no place to judge fairly whether they deserve to be there...
I would put Paul Gilbert in there, and high up too. Not just because he can shred with the best, but because he has fun, he's a nice guy and he makes pretty simple songs. Petrucci needs to go since he's nothing but a wanky note***** in a band full of wanky note*****s and has absolutely no feeling whatsoever. Frusciante deserves to be above him, because Frusciante understands space, subtlety and feeling.
Ultimate fail.
this, UG proves once again that 90% of the site is beginner to intermediate level guitar players that vote for things they can play rather than anyone actually good
This made me laugh. So you think the guitar players on this list appeal to "beginner to intermediate" guitar players and that only advanced players know how to appreciate Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc?
You're going through a phase where you don't quite understand the guitar as an instrument or even music in general. Lots of kids go through it. You think that people who can play scales really, really fast but have no imagination are somehow better than players who play with passion AND skill.
Maybe you'll get over it and maybe you won't. I suggest opening your mind and at least trying. Discovering how amazing the guitar is is so much more rewarding than being a mediocre, boring guitar snob.
The comparison I always make is this - Who would you rather read a book by - a brilliant author or someone who can type 200 words per minute?
Well, here's the first list i even seen I can agree with. a great balance of genres, with my absolute fav (John Frusciante), with the undoubtedly king Jimi Hendrix at no. 1! Good job
Yeah well I wasn't even alive then. My point is that if everyone knew who Steve Vai was, he'd be in the top 10.
There are reasons some of these guys always make the top spots and that reason is because of what they contributed, think of all the chords and licks that both Jimi and Jimmy came up with, yeah it might be basic but this is what countless guitarists took influence from and its really hard to top aspiring a person to play no matter how bitching your riff is.
Listen there is no such thing as the greatest guitar player ever if there were then they could play any song and any genre it's all opinion ya of course some of these guys are one of the best but there's other people that don't get any credit and in every list there's someone different so what is it did they get any better?
Is the list the top 10 greatest guitarist or the top 10 most popular guitarists?
I don't believe Angus Young and Joe Satriani are "Top Ten" guitar players, but I think they're better than half the guys on this list. Steve Vai too...
Like seriously The Chili Peppers guitarist is on here? The only person from the Chili Peppers who deserves to be on any list is Flea...And David Gilmour??? Slash would wipe these two off the list and take both their spots LOL. crap list.
no bucketead, :/ seriously ?? the guy has more emotion, technique and intelligence on guitar than most of the guitarists on the top 10 list. disappointed !!!
John Petrucci has no feeling??? What?! You obviously haven't heard much of his playing. Paul Gilbert is phenomenal though, he should really be on this list, but to say that John Petrucci plays with no feeling is absolutley ridiculous.. Listen to The Spirit Carries On, Breaking All Illusions, Under A Glass Moon...come on.
Jeff Beck? It's a shame, he doesn't seem to have be in the same level of popularity as Clapton, Page and Hendrix. I don't hear to many people talking about him, while at the same time he's one of the most famous guitarists of all time.
you are a fool and probably not a very experienced musician to call hendrix overrated.
not many guitar players in history have been more emulated. the chops he had for a player in the late 60's are impressive and the guitar would not be where it is today without him. you also have to consider he came up with a huge amount of material and classics in the short 3 year span he recorded before his death.
very happy to see randy rhoads on the list. his track is soloed but you can tell it's him playing easily. very few guitar players can be identified this easily and to have your own style/sound is way more important than technical shredding.
These lists are so stupid. There is no "greatest guitarist ever". When you reach a certain level in playing guitar you can't differentiate whether one talented guitarist in one band is better than a talented guitarist in another band. At that point it becomes merely a contest of popularity.
Voters don't know the difference between rock and metal guitarists, just like they didn't know the difference between a rock chick, radio pop princess and an old drag queen on the hot chick list.
This list is exactly what I pictured it to be. Its funny that when a magazine composes a list nearly identical to this, everyone on here bitches and complains. Yet, when given the opportunity to create a list, they pick the same people that they bitched about a magazine editor picking. This list, like all of the "best" lists, is a complete joke and shows how closed minded the average music listener is.
I actually don't disagree with this list. Mostly because Randy placed high, and I was pleasantly surprised to find John Frusciante. The more I listen to him the more I like him.
Maybe because he's the most influential guitarist in history? Often imitated, never duplicated. Not to mention a genius. If you don't think he's a good player, listen to I'm The One from the debut album. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY has the feel/tone/swing combo like Eddie does.
Tbh guitarists/musicians of their calibur its a bit redunant looking for better and best for all of those monsters and others that didnt make the list its all about style/feel/taste ect... just seems a bit dumb making a list like that there all the best at what they do realy.
Decent list. I disagree with the inclusion of EVH, but that is my own bias, not a big Hendrix fan either, but he deserve his spot on this list. I'd have liked to see Mr. Alvin Lee on here.
Jimi Hendrix? I'll very likely get a lot of hate for this, but really? His claim to fame was innovation caused by cleverness. He wasn't really a great guitarist. It's like saying Kurt Cobain was a good guitarist.
chuck berry ?! wot...
he is maybe legend for some people just because of being a rock n roll guy, who started it, like jimi - also started new style.
but he definitely should not be on this list.
A rockn'roll guitarist who should be there - Angus Young or Saul Hudson with no doubt.
"Manic depression is touching my soul
I know what I want but I just don't know
How to, go about gettin' it
Feeling sweet feeling,
Drops from my fingers, fingers
Manic depression is catchin' my soul
Woman so weary, the sweet cause in vain
You make love, you break love
It's all the same
When it's, when it's over, mama
Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress, caress, caress
Manic depression is a frustrating mess
Well, I think I'll go turn myself off,
And go on down
All the way down
Really ain't no use in me hanging around
In your kinda scene
Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress, caress, caress
Manic depression is a frustrating mess
Ow! ow!
Music sweet music sweet music
Sweet music sweet music
Hooo!"
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part
of a "mainstream" band.
What I like about this list is that Dave Gilmour is so high up. Bravo. And even though I'm no great listener of RHCPs Frusciante is seriously great. Bravo again. Rory Gallagher is a personal favourite of mine but hell it's only a list anyway.
My favourite is Richie Sambora (bon jovi) and hes not on here but im not fussed. I agree with the top 10 (besides its lack of sambora). they're all talented. And no Slash is better. Hes great but sometimes i struggle to stay concentrated long enough on his playing.
Should replace Petrucci with Carlos Santana. Santana is clearly the better song writer, has the better tone, and plays with more soul, even if he can't "shred" like Petrucci. Nothing about Petrucci's songs is memorable.
There's a difference between "greatest" guitarist and "best" guitarist. You don't have to be the most skilled guitarist to be the greatest, i.e. Hendrix. Certainly not the most skilled or technical player but makes up for it with innovation, originality and charisma.
Also, glad to see Iommi on the list. Should be higher imo. He's the man
Well Iommi and Page are on the list so I'm pretty much satisfied. The rest of the list is pretty damn solid too. Everyone complaining is either an elitist or retarded, all of these 10 people deserve to be in this list in my honest, humble, unsalted opinion.
Personally bummed to not see Slash or Brian May on here, but definitely have to say that the top 3 on this list is the most accurate I've seen on any list, anywhere. Kudos UG and voters.
Where the FUCK is Dimebag Darrell in this Damn list!
For the same reason The Rev isn't on the "best drummers evar" list, simply because you're dead doesn't mean you're good.
I think that statement is a bit unfair Anchr. Dimebag Darrell was pretty amazing and is sorely missed by the guitar world. I would say it's more accurate to state that he is not on here because he would belong on a list devoted primarily to top 10 Heavy Metal guitar players. Fair enough?
Why is it always lead guitarists? When will we rhythm guitarists have our day?! We provide the core of the all the music you love! There would be no solos without us! QQ
I just happy UG had real voting for once inctead of people voting for a toilet bowl o something....great list, nice surprise to see John Frusciante on here
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here.
Yeah well I wasn't even alive then. My point is that if everyone knew who Steve Vai was, he'd be in the top 10.
Well the problem is you not knowing guitar history, then. Not Steve Vai not playing in mainstream bands.
Lists like this are absolutely bollocks, as when you reach the level of skills that these guitarists have reached there really is no one who is better than the next, they're just strong in different ways.
Also for everyone wondering why John Frusciante is on the list, listen to his music - really listen. There is incredible amounts of passion and feeling in every note he plays. Technically he's not very strong, but the emotion is absolutely unmatchable.
When i got to the end of the list only missing the number 1 spot and had yet to see Hammett on the list i was terrified. I am so incredibly happy that he didnt make it and Hendrix got the number 1 spot like he undoubtedly deserves.
sry for saying this, but i don't understand why Hendrix is on 1th, I don't feel any special feeling from his guitar playing, could someone explain please? and John Petrucci he is a bit overrated, he shouldn't be over Tony, that's for sure
John Frusciante is my most favorite man and guitarist on the face of this earth. You don't know how happy I was to see him on this list! Now he just needs to move up on the Rolling Stone list.
Where the FUCK is Dimebag Darrell in this Damn list!

I would like to see michael Schenker. And I know I might get flammed for this but mike mccready also.. and Ritchie Blackmore. And Pat Travers. And Leslie West- ok ill shut up now.
The only guitarist I would love to see on this list because I think he deserves it is Shawn lane just because of his phenomenal talent (not just because he is fast) he was just as gifted as Hendrix I think that if Shawn was still alive guitar music would be in a much better place right now
lmfao I was able to name half of this list before I read it. Jimi at #1? On what scale are we judging greatness here? If fame = greatness, this list isn't too far off. Petrucci should be a little higher on the list, in my opinion. Still, they're all fantastic musicians; Tosin Abasi will always be #1 to me!
Gilmour is perfect at 2 because he's just to perfect. He's never played one note too many or few. He's always played the exact right note. So not Rock n Roll of him and his only flaw.
I am trying to like John Frusciante him as a player but I just do NOT get it. He is sloppy but not a good sloppy (like the almighty Page) his vibrato is not impressive (like a Gary Moore/David Gilmour) His note choice is very cliche going for the Hendrix vibe without the finesse or cleanness of Hendrix's runs. He is certainly not as innovative or dazzling like an Eddie Van Halen, or unique as a Tom Morello or Edge, His rhythm is certainly not immaculate like Eddie's, or Malcom, Hetfield, or SRV. And his tone is so bleh. If you're looking for a guitar legend, he is not it. He's a bro player for people who don't really know the history of electric guitarists. Songwriting? sure thats an argument. The RHCP are a great band and his solos fit the songs but thats where it ends. But guitar playing? Give me a break. I'd put Mike McCready, Kim Thayil, or Jerry Cantrell far above him. Hell even Slash has written far more iconic songs and solos and he isn't even on this list..and this dude is?
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
Vai was in Whitesnake and the David Lee Roth band[/b]
I know this is a best of "all-time" list, and therefore I wouldn't expect to see him on this list since he is a more modern guitarist... but I think Mark Tremonti should be on this list.
of course they always count influence when voting because , animals as leaders, between the buried and me, protest the hero, fall of troy and ...well so on - have the best nowadays ...like all these guitarrists? don't agree with the order - fusciante it to close to the top =)
...Frusciante? I like the Chili Peppers, but C'MON. He's not one of the top 10 guitarists of all time. Where's Alex Lifeson? Well, at least it's not just Misha Mansoor, Tosin Abasi and the guys from BTBAM 800 times over and over again(from what I can gather they're the only metal guitarists anyone listens to anymore).
This list is why I'll never respect ANYONE'S opinion on UG.
Eddie Van Halen at #7 behind the guy from the Chilli Peppers?! I see we're not aiming for innovation and influence here. LEGIONS more guitar players site EVH as an influence over Frusciante...
Oh, I'm also glad to see you played it safe by listing Gilmour, Page and Hendrix in the top 3... Obviously people here are listening to too much generic classic rock radio, where the hard on for those 3 never ends...
If I wanted another predictable list like this, I would've bought the new "rolling stone magazine 100 greatest guitarists" which has basically been the EXACT same publication since the first edition of it...
Iommi at #10?!!
Nevermind everyone else's list that includes some obscure, interchangable guitar player that sounds boring Iommi started IT ALL and hes in at lousy #10...
there definiately are guitarists i'd like to see on the list.. but out of those who made made it there my top three would be:
1.Van Halen
2.Page
3.Rhoads
Um, I wouldn't call Clapton or Gilmour rock guitarists.
I'd say Petrucci, Iommi and Rhoads are also in the grey area between rock and metal. So do we now have have top10 rock guitarist list with just like five actual ROCK guitarists? Well.. there's no one to really draw the line..[/b]
I'll probably get downvoted for this... but I'm SO glad Kieth Richards isn't on this list. I like the Stones but he is the most fapped to, overrated guitarist ever.
what about flea?? omgIsnt he a bassist? This is for guitarists.Try reading the article before making silly posts.
oh i'm sorry, for a second there i thought the bass guitar was a guitar. sorry. And where does it say anything about bass guitars or bassists in the opening few paragraphs?Nowhere thats where.
To me, these "Best Ever" lists should have far more to do with influence than technical ability. Anyone can learn to shred if they practice enough, but it takes far more than technical ability to change how people play an instrument.
That's why Hendrix will always rank above guys like Vai and Malmsteen.
pretty decent list. i want to name some lesser known guitarists so all you guitar lovers can enjoy these amazing talents, along with the legends.
Paul Waggoner (between the buried and me)
Thomas Erak (fall of troy)
Tosin Asabi (animals as leaders)
Nick Drake
John 5
and some more famous honorable mentions:
Dean DeLeo (STP)
Johnny Marr (the smiths)
Robby Krieger (the doors)
Nice! Dean DeLeo!
Also some more guitarists who more players should know about/appreciate
Michael Gurley (Dada)
Marc Ford (The Black Crowes)
Tim Mahoney (311)
Scott Holiday (Rival Sons)
Tom Schulz (Boston)
I think I were to write a top 10 for Rock Guitarists, I'd probably work it out like this (and if I had time to type everything out, I'd provide some well-thought out opinions)
10. Alex Lifeson
9. Adam Jones
8. Jimi Hendrix
7. Hide
6. Adrian Belew
5. David Gilmour
4. Steve Hackett
3. Steve Howe
2. Robert Fripp
1. Frank Zappa

Dimebag wouldn't be in the top 10 Heavy Metal guitar players even if you were to only pick from mainstream Metal. Maybe if you were to ask some of the dumbest and most entry-level Metal fans. But he wouldn't even be in the Top 100 if you were to ask metalheads who know more than a handful of bands.
Generic, uninteresting riffs and shred-wank for solos don't make "pretty amazing" unless you add "in an over-hyped band, and dead"
Not trying to be a GNR fanboy, but Slash really should be on this list.. His guitar work doesn't seem difficult, but if you sit down with the Appetite Guitar Tab book, you will shit your pants 10 times over trying to learn some of it..
WHY NOT RORY GALLAGHER!!?? wtf! have you not heard Walking on Hot Coals, EVER? Irish Tour?? no? obviously not!! come on... he outshines Chuck Berry any day!! id pick Santana over Chuck! i like the guy but come on.. please keep this in mind for the next Top 10!
I disagree with Randy Rhoads. He's released two albums, Malmsteen did more for neo classical than he did, just because he's dead, he's on the list. I'm not saying he's not a phenomenal guitar player though. He is. Just listen to that solo, but someone else deserves to be on the list. Dimebag, Wylde, SRV, Peter Green, the talented one from Priest, Hammett Hannemann, Slash, Buckethead, even James Iha would be worthy.
what about flea?? omgIsnt he a bassist? This is for guitarists.Try reading the article before making silly posts.
oh i'm sorry, for a second there i thought the bass guitar was a guitar. sorry. And where does it say anything about bass guitars or bassists in the opening few paragraphs?Nowhere thats where.
oh, i'm very sorry.
come on you two, just be thankful that you got through a UG top ten list that didn't go something like
10. Noel Gallagher
9. Noel Gallagher
8. Noel Gallagher
7. Noel Gallagher
6. Butt sex with Noel Gallagher
5. Noel Gallagher
4. Noel Gallagher
3. Noel Gallagher's genitals
2. Noel Gallagher
1. Being raped by Noel Gallagher in a dark alleyway
decent list.
I can't agree with all of it.
I think there are some key guitarists missing.
There's Slash, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jim Moroson, Zakk Wylde, and probably more that I can't think of right now.
I think it'll be cool if we all make our own lists in the comments and appraise each others with the little + and - boxes. Me first.
1. Guthrie Govan
2. Jeff Beck
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Allan Holdsworth
5. Frank Zappa
6. Shawn Lane
7. Stevie Ray Vaughn
8. David Gilmour
9. Randy Rhoads
10. Dweezil Zappa
11. Me
I like most of those musicians listed. Its just that the top ten format is too limited. By the way where the **** is Dimebag in this list? He is easily one of the most influential popular musicians of all time. Oh and where is Zakk Wylde? I guess they couldn't have too many shredders on one list.
Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get shit for this, but I'd like to see Thurston Moore, J Mascis or Jerry Cantrell in this list. Didn't really expected it to happen, though... but props for Iommi, Clapton and Gilmour.
this list is valid if we're still living in the 90's...but now we have the likes of jeff loomis and guthrie govan and a whole new generation of players that can play better..just saying
Love the Frusciante pick on the list but there are some good ones, specifically Lifeson that are missing. Jimi is #1. No one had the ability, musicality, and foresight that Jimi had. Eric Clapton shit his pants when he saw Jimi and then produced mediocore music for the rest of his career.

Good to see John frusciante in the top ten, he's definitely one of the most emotional and spiritual players of all time. A little annoyed at people just judging him on his work with the peppers when he does so much amazing solo work as well
I'd say that the 30 best guitarists of all time are pretty evenly matched. past a certain point, the number one guitarist is left to opinion. There isn't a single man on this list who doesn't deserve to be there, despite the fact that there are people who aren't on the list who also maybe deserved a mention.
Sooooo Mad : You never asked yourself if he was doing that on purpose? You're basically bashing at music itself, trying to make it perfect and full of order. This is ROCK music. Please read the title. And here i thought rock was suppose to be a statement of freedom and expression. I guess I have clue :-(
Since the list is 'the GREATEST rock guitarists' my vote would have have Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler and Pete Townsend. But everyone has a different opinion on matters like this.
I cant take this seriously when there's no Slash or keith Richards for that mattter. Clapton is awesome but hes a blues player, and all you metal heads suggesting metal players, the list says "Top Ten ROCK Guitarists". These lists are pointless anyway because they are based on subjectivity.
I'm kind of disillusioned by this list a bit. I guess the people voted though, and I love John Fusciante, but I don't understand why so many people are going mad over him on this site. If someone could confirm that it's for his writing, style and contribution then it would make sense to me, cos I assumed this list was for who could technically play the best, in which case there are many better guitarists. Gonna get flamed for that, but f_ck the haters.
I think quite a few people seem to forget that these lists aren't about guitarists who can shred modes at 355bpm. More so about how well their guitar work is constructed and how memorable it is. Would like to see George Harrison on one of these lists at some point.
Is it a new trend to say Slash is overated and that he sucks? Slash can play heavy riffs, rock riffs, blues, and even flamenco, and it's all natural to him. On top of that he gave us some of the greatest solo ever. Oh but I forgot, he's not the fastest... you're right he sucks.
I cannot express how happy I am to see John Frusciante and John Petrucci on this list. I figured you guys were all stubborn a**holes who refused to acknowledge that good rock music existed past the 1970s.
Not a bad list I guess. Really have a hard time with frusciante being up there, he is a great guitarist but no. 6 I cant wrap myself around. Someone I would have liked to seen up there is Gary Moore but that's just me.
Eddie Van Halen is the only the 7th greatest guitarist!? That's f***ed up. The man invented so many guitar playing techniques that John Frusciante never even dreamed of. John might be a good guitar player and everything, but hell, even Slash should be up there instead of John F***ing Frusciante!
I still think Steve Vai is better than anyone on here. The problem is that no one knows who he is, kind of like Joe Satriani, because he was never part of a "mainstream" band.
10.Dimebag Darrell
9. Rory Gallagher
8. David Gilmour
7. Freddie King
6. Tom Morello
5. Eric Clapton
4. Frank Zappa
3. Jimi Hendrix
2. Roy Buchanan
1. Brian May
pretty decent list. i want to name some lesser known guitarists so all you guitar lovers can enjoy these amazing talents, along with the legends.
Paul Waggoner (between the buried and me)
Thomas Erak (fall of troy)
Tosin Asabi (animals as leaders)
Nick Drake
John 5
and some more famous honorable mentions:
Dean DeLeo (STP)
Johnny Marr (the smiths)
Robby Krieger (the doors)
I love you. +1 for Robbyh Krieger, a huge influence of mine, Johnny Marr is an underrated god, and John 5 is unbelievable. THIS LIST. Im not a huge STP fan, mainly becuase most of their riffs and song are pretty simplistic. But Robby Krieger DEFINITELY deserves to be on here.
John Frusciante should be on the list. Lots of people don't understand how original he is. Not the usual ripping off dead blues players guitarist unlike some others.
Personally I'd switch Page and Gilmour, but they're both such incredible guitarists that it's fine. I'm so glad Frusciante made it; he deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.
I think that Ron Asheton is seriously overlooked as a guitarist. Search and Destroy, TV Eye (the riff Tom Morello later stole for "Sleep Now in the Fire", cough).... and listening to the live stuff, where Iggy just goes off doing his own thing and Asheton had to improvise, it's like damn. It really shows his mettle, aside from the incendiary shit on the records.
But yeah, why always overlooking Asheton/ Iggy & The Stooges?
I think a few of the most overlooked guitarists that deserve at least some mentions in the comment section are
Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult)
Mick Ronson (Mott the Hoople, David Bowie)
Paul Kossoff (Free)
Davy Knowles (Back Door Slam)
Also I'm somewhat appalled at the fact that Duane Allman, Billy Gibbons, and Allan Collins are not getting praise.
My top 10 list would be
10. John Fruciante
9. Ritchie Blackmore
8. Duane Allman
7. Eddie Van Halen
6. Tony Iommi
5. Jeff Beck
4. Dave Guilmore
3. Jimmy Page
2. Eric Clapton
1. Jimi Hendrix
There are definitely plenty of alternatives that could've made it on this list and many of the replies show a lack of understanding for the generality of the question... It's not "top 10 metal guitarists" or "top 10 shredders" or "top 10 alternative guitarists" or even "top 10 60s-70s classic rock guitarists", it's just "top 10 rock guitarists". In accordance with the question, I think this list is surprisingly solid, if a bit predicable. *shrugs*
you wannaaaaa fuuuuu**iiiiin kidding me ?!!!!?!?!!
I scrolled down and waited for SLASH to appear...
and was sure hes number ONE, but nooo hes not even on the list, this isnt flaming. this is REAL LIFE!
if slash isnt even under the best 3.. this list is just dumb Sh*t sorry, but no
I know that there could never be "one" best guitarist, but Michaelangelo Batio does things on the guitar i've never seen before. he sweeps UPSIDE DOWN!
The guy from the chili peppers a BRO player for people who know nothing about the history of electric guitar players, decent songwriter, but terrible player compared to the greats. His vibrato is non existent (look up Gary Moore for an example of what pro vibrato sounds like), his go to riffs are hendrix rip offs without the finesse or clarity of hendrix. His rhythm is certainly not impressive like a pro of SRV EVH Malcom or Townshends calibur. Just because he plays with his mouth hanging open like he is struggling to hit a note does not make it good. Good songwriter? sure, the Chilis are a great band, but thats where it ends, sorry broskis. PS his tone is bleh. Give me Tom Morello way before this guy, at least he was innovative and unique.
It's hard to compare one player to another since they have their own style and it's hard to accept if your favorite player is not included on the list most likely because we really don't know this guys especially if you where born in the 80's how can you appreciate players way back from the 70's I like Paul Gilbert,Satriani,Petrucci and Vai because I always listen to their music but if I was born late 50's I might said oldies are still goodies though!!!!
2 or no. 3.
THANK GOD!
I thought i was the only one who thought he's a little over rated.
not another slash fan who reckons slash is the best -.-

All I have to say...I understand that most people always give Hendrix #1...Page #2... Clapton #3... Etc. But please for the love of god, Am I the ONLY one who thinks they should at least list some NEW INNOVATIVE GUITARISTS. Re-doing the same list over and over and over with a slight variation here and there doesn't help with new guitarists...Please, for the love of god. Give guitarists like Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan, A spot on this list. I understand most people will not even take the time to look these two up. But...Just GIVE EM A CHANCE MAN!
Dammit where is cobain :p I will say the list is pretty decent and to anyone complaining about people who should be on here, while may have a good argument, should realize people are going to vote for who they know. I, personally, would have liked to see john5/John lawery on this list, but unfortunately who he has played with, with exception to the dlr band have pretty much killed his chances. Anyone who don't believe me check the link. I think any guitarist can appreciate this.
To me, these "Best Ever" lists should have far more to do with influence than technical ability. Anyone can learn to shred if they practice enough, but it takes far more than technical ability to change how people play an instrument.
That's why Hendrix will always rank above guys like Vai and Malmsteen.
if technicality is what that matters, then paul gilbert, malmsteen should have been in the list
Frusciante has written RHCP's finest albums. Mother's Milk, BSSM, Californication, By The Way, Stadium Arcadium. Apart from being credited some of the greatest hits and singles the Peppers have ever been noted for, (Under the Bridge, Californication, Otherside, Scar Tissue, By The Way)Frusciante has written eleven solo albums. Needless to say, he has definitely put himself in the position to be seen as a musician who is always original and hardworking. The Red Hot Chili Peppers on the other hand have released ten albums while writing and working on an eleventh while on tour. They would not have been around (and still touring) for thirty years if people thought they were the "worst band ever".
GameSkate wrote:
Frusciante, lol. How guitarist from worst band ever can be so good?
of course hendrix is going to be number one. he always number on because most of the idiots making these lists are old nostalgic losers who have nothing better to do than piss everyone off.
Brian May has to be in here, his guitar composition was impeccable and above a few of these guitarists. Some of the comment's about frusciante are hilarious, the man is a wizard on the guitar, i scratch my head on his solo work but the stuff he did for the chili peppers was amazing, the guitar in under the bridge is some of my favourite from any guitarist. I may get shit on for this but i do believe dimebag should have an honorable mention, the guy was a genius, say what you like about pantera, but that guy knew how to ****ing play, his tone was horrid at times i must admit...
Hey metal heads, blazing speed is not an indication of great guitar playing. It's all about tone: Clapton,Page and BECK. Where is Carlos Santana?
Yes, EVH belongs on the list and high up. Yes,
Jimi is #1. Ask the rest of the people on the list!
I was pleased to find the list a bit decent, somewhat expected and fair. I disenjoyed the brief biographies of a few of the artists and its mention of mostly tragedy-seeing as it's not needed at all for the article and only draws attention to the negatives instead of epic ****ing guitar playing.
Am I the only one that thinks these lists are all the same? It's like seeing a list of "Best Albums of the 1990s." You know that Nirvana's "Nevermind" is going to be named number 1...
As said before: Rory Gallagher
AND Stevie Ray Vaughan.
He's kind of a blues guitarist but if Hendrix (kind of blues too, but absolutely deserving place 1) is here, why not Stevie? I mean just listen to his version of "Little Wing" or "Couldn't stand the weather".
He's awsome!!! Maybe instead of Berry...
Just the fact that Hendrix got #1 spot is.. kind of just strange and out to lunch. Hendrix was really good, but better than Gilmour? Frusciante #6?! What the hell? If he's going to be on the list he should be #10. Where is Alex Lifeson? You could even put Synyster Gates on this list over Frusciante.. He's good, but seriously top ten? #6.. just way out to lunch once again UG..
this kind of lists always generate disguises, and i think is impossible to define who is the best of all times, there's a lot of styles and genres
Yeah, but the least U-G could do would be to put the guitarists in the 'correct' lists.
For example, as I said earlier, this is a ROCK guitarist list. EVH is a great guitarist, but he's not a ROCK guitarist so he doesn't belong anywhere in THIS list.
It's nice to see a list of "Top 10 Guitarists" that includes people who's professional careers started before 1990(except Frusciante, but he is brilliant).
they should get rid of these lists as every single time its the same guitarists its boring and repetetive as there is no such thing as the greatest guitarist this list is just the most famous ones for their sh***y 5min long guitar solos
For me it would be
1.Jeff Loomis
2.Petrucci
3.The Ammott Brothers, and music is completely opinion based, everyone has different tastes, who cares if your guitarist arent on there?
I wonder wehn josh homme dies/gets as old if he'll be in the top 10, i mean he has written more music then the rolling stones. His been in Kyuss, Queens of the stone age, eagles of death metal, them crooked vultures, masters of reality, green monarchs, and a couple others. That my friends is modern greatness!
Ultimate fail.
this, UG proves once again that 90% of the site is beginner to intermediate level guitar players that vote for things they can play rather than anyone actually good
you guys are idiots. guitar is not all about shredding. these guitarists that you mentioned have taken speed to such limits that the guitar seems more like a way to prove your speed rather than to play music. look at the great stuff the guitarists above did. they are true legends. and i'm pretty sure anyone you mentioned would have bitchslapped you in the face for underestimating tony iommi
Ultimate fail.
this, UG proves once again that 90% of the site is beginner to intermediate level guitar players that vote for things they can play rather than anyone actually good
You and the above poster obviously don't know what your talking about. Speed doesn't mean crap if you can't convey emotions.... It's an instrument
Hendrix Was no doubt a legend and a grand push forward for the world of rock and roll, as well as a slap in the face to most guitarists at the time. However I would not place him at number one on this particular list.
There's always going to be disagreements on such a subjective topic.
Personally the list seems pretty reasonable - even if Clapton (in my opinion) has done nothing worthwhile since around 1976.
I think should consider a list for bassist too on here. Afterall, the bass is still a guitar nonetheless and in some ways has different playing styles than guitar. Also, some bassist have set an influence over future music, such as Roger Waters from Pink Floyd as one example. Anyway, this was a good list.

Pssst. Wana know who's a better bassist than Roger Waters? David Gilmour. The stories are legion about Gilmour playing bass tracks all over Floyd's albums.
Can't really complain about the list. Of course, I may swap one or two guys out based on personal preference, but that's just preference.
Yeah, you always get people who say these guys make these spots/lists because they're expected to be there, but there's a reason why they're expected to be there, they've quite clearly earned the spot.
All polls end up in a pissing contest. I have never got into Clapton and Hendrix , I guess Page deserves to be there, I love RR, but...
I just want to say that in 1977, Metal ,hard rock was on the ropes, Judas , Scorpions , AC DC, Nugent and Rush were doing there best. Then EVH was unleashed and everything changed, so please weather you think your budgie can tap better, you can't knock EVH. What makes a legend, Slash and Steve Vai have sold more Les Pauls and Jems, than Frusciante has got kids to buy a Tele or Strat.
I like , Paul Gilbet,Jeff Beck,Satch. I bought a Strat because of Dave Gilmore. Guitar playing has and is evolving, so should Polls.
so disappointed john frusciante made this list, and ahead of EVH and Petrucci???? BAHAHAHAHAHA laughable...respectable guitarist...great band...top 10??? clearly whoever finalized this list was on more acid than frusciante....
I knew what was coming, Iommi, Hendrix ect but I like to see Frusciante there.
Whenever I bring him up all I get are "You heard that solo in can't stop? He's so shit". That being said, once again, there are do many defining factors that make a good guitarist that you can't just have a definitive list. Hendrix might've been more influencian but Petrucci is probably more technically skilled, you see what I mean? Now I'm off before I start another flame war.
Great UG, you made nostalgia numerical...Whoopty Doo! Looks like a list of the most well known guitarists from people who don't listen to rock/metal. Z.Wylde, Dimebag, B.May, KFK, Hanneman, Kisser, Richards, Slash, and Tommy Emmanuel are on my list of super-sweet shredders...
Jimi Hendrix is the MOST OVERRATED guitarist ever. Yes, he is great and extremely talented, but he isn't number one. Anyone can light a guitar on fire. Anyone can smash it on the ground. a bit predictable, but at least they're all respectable guitarists in their own right. in the end its all opinion. Tbh I find all the metalheads who complain about all their favourite shredders being excluded from a rock list more annoying than the list itself. I cant smoke a joint and listen to someone shred 2000 notes a second....its just a buzz kill. But its just an opinion.
I'm so happy to see John Frusciante on this list he made like 76 or something like that on Rolling Stone's top 100, of course he'll always be number one to me!
The only guitarist I would love to see on this list because I think he deserves it is Shawn lane just because of his phenomenal talent (not just because he is fast) he was just as gifted as Hendrix I think that if Shawn was still alive guitar music would be in a much better place right now
I couldn't agree more about him being a phenomenal talent and deserving of recognition, but he's much farther from rock than Petrucci, and he barely belongs on a list of "rock" guitarists as he is prog/metal.
If this were Jazz/Fusion guitarists, Shawn would be number one. All day, every day.
How about George Lynch?? how many of these guitarists in the list can say of themselves they have evolved like him over the years? also, his mighty-in-your-face sound?
Personally, I don't think he's the worst guitarist in the world. But he definitely deserves to be kept at arms length of any top ten lists. Hell, maybe away from a top 100.
Bit gutting about the lack of Brian May in this list though, even if he is a personal favourite.
It is actually a good list, I just don't think John Frusciante should be up there... Kirk Hammet should take his spot.
I don't think either should be on there, I don't rate Hammet at all (well, I used to when I was 15 but there are so many better players out there). Personally, I think Hetfield is better than Hammet.
In terms of who's missing - one glaring omission is Guthrie Govan, that guy is just fantastic. And not just because he can play fast, but because his music is genuinely interesting - he gets some very cool sounds out of the guitar and he's massively versatile as a player.
1. David Gilmour
2. Brian May
3. Ritchie Blackmore
4. Hendrix ( yeah only 4th but for me he's the pioneer of eguitar, but on an artistic point of view isn't as gifted as others on my list)
5. Jimi Page
6. Slash
7. Randy Rhoads ( a bit to high on my list since his career is short as hell)
8. Iommi
9. Van Halen
10. Prince ( yes...)
i do agree with others comments their are alot of great guitarists missed off the list. Can you really have ten best rock guitarists??? Surely there are more than ten that within their own right are great???
Noo! I'm so sick of the over rated Hendrix being number one. He doesn't deserve to be on the top 100 in my opinion. Sorry. I'll probably be hated. Steve Vai, Jason becker, Synyster Gates. Even satriani and malmsteen though I'm not big fans. I AM happy that Randy got on this list though. It's about time.
I'm not here to say who's wrong or not; all art is subjective.
But why am I seeing people talk crap about John Frusciante? If you don't like his music, that's fine, but to say he sucks? He is a musical genius, in my opinion, and I'm not just talking about his work with RHCP. He is about to release his 11th solo album next month.
As for Jimi, I'm biased because he (like Frusciante) is one of my heroes, but look at his influence, his body of work, his legacy, and think: he released his first record in '67 and was dead by '70 at only 27 years old. I have no problem seeing him at #1.
*gets on soapbox
Some of you have taken something as beautiful and freeing as rock guitar and have turned it into something like politics; if someone doesn't share your views, they're stupid. Be happy that you've found music that really speaks to you, and hope that others find the same for themselves. Art is subjective.
I don't choose to enjoy an artist because they're supposed to be the best, because they got a spot on some list. I listen to an artist because I LIKE that artist. That's all that matters.
Not to be overly meticulous, but seeing how this is supposed to be a top 10 for rock guitarists, I wouldn't have included Iommi, Petrucci and Rhoads since they mainly play/have played metal. Still a pretty nice list though, but I'm very disappointed that neither Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Gary Moore made it.
I was surprised found John Frusciante (who is deffinitely more pop-punk-funk than rock guitarist) at the higher rank than Van Halen, and haven't found Richie Blackmore at any rank at all.
The best list I've ever seen so far.
I agree very much with it. I would have liked to have seen Joe Satriani, but it's not the end of the world. Also, I'm really glad that the most overrated guitarist of all time, Slash, isn't on it.
I do NOT understand why all of you idiots think that this list isn't good. It's actually very good!
For everyone who thinks Frusciante is over-rated and shouldnt be on there because of his 'simple' riffs then watch this video and have your minds changed forever. He more than deserves to be on there as his live performances really showcase his true skill. His solos/funk/tone are truly recognizable. I'ld put him equal to hendrix as 1 for their influences. Every band/guitarist I meet cite frusciante as an influence.
My one comment on Frusciante in comparison with a great guitarist is that he always kinda looks like Carlos Santana at Woodstock. No matter how many videos you show me of him, I just can't see him making a top 10 and Satriani not even making the list, in any kind of comprehensive rock list. After all, it's arguable that Satriani taught most of the most critically acclaimed guitarists of the 80s. Maybe I only think that way because I'm a Metal/Hard Rock guitarist and not a Funk or Jazz guitarist.
Satriani can play every style of music possible including jazz and funk along with rock and metal and i reckon he can play any style better than any other guitarist, he's number one for me, but thats just my opinion. everyone has their own taste
