A7X Drummer Dies At 28

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, drummer for the band "Avenged Sevenfold", was found dead in his home in Huntington Beach, California, on December 28th. He was 28 years old.

Sullivan appears to have died of natural causes, Huntington Beach police Lt. John Domingo told The Orange County Register. Police were notified by firefighters who had responded to Sullivan's home about 1 p.m., according to the report.

The Orange County coroner's office is investigating his death.

The band formed in Huntington Beach in 1999, and was currently working on their fifth album. In addition to playing drums for A7X, The Rev was a prolific songwriter, having contributed the track "A Little Piece of Heaven" to the band's fourth studio CD, 2007's "Avenged Sevenfold".

The rest of the band submitted this statement on their website:

"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Jimmy you are forever in our hearts.
We love you.

M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ"

RIP James Owen Sullivan.

One thing puzzles me though. He died of "Natural Causes" at 28? Something doesn't add up there...

A lot of people I know think they should call it quits now out of respect. I don't think they should however, as in another instance, with the death of Cliff Burton, Metallica went on to make their best album, "...And Justice For All". But regardless of what the band decide to do, it is sad to see The Rev's passing, and I hope people show the respect to his family that is deserved.

By natural causes, it probably means that he did so many drugs so many times in his past, and his body just shut down, or he had a heart attack because of it, or something. Really, it means that he didn't OD, but it definitely doesn't rule out drug use.

Astyan wrote on 12/31/2009 - 08:09 am / quote |
I'm really curious to know the cause of his death. I know some people claim it is related to drugs but I find it rather unlikely, an overdose would've been obvious and immediately reported unless the Police was specifically asked to hide the truth.

Anyway, it's really sad for his bandmates and family. So much talent gone to waste, I hope the band keeps going although I'm not a huge fan of them (I really admire Synyster Gates though, awesome guitarist).

That's what got me asking some questions too.. However, it is plausible to die of natural causes at the age of 28.. As unlikely as it is, it still is plausible..

RIP, you were one of the best drummers and your vocals were also awesome.. Damn

Astyan wrote on 12/31/2009 - 08:13 am / quote |
Oh and dying young of natural causes is perfectly possible. A friend of my brother died at 17 from ruptured cerebral aneurysm. It is extremely rare but it exists.

ItsOnlyGNR wrote on 12/31/2009 - 08:16 am / quote |
Its possible that he had a heart attack or something like that due to his drug and alcohol use. It really is sad though, he is probably one of my favorite drummers of all time, even though a7x isn't necessarily my cup of tea. His drumming really amazes me though, there's just something about it. And his voice is just so intense and gritty, I actually like his voice much more than M. Shadows.

It's pretty obvious that a7x will soon write some great songs about The Rev.

He was far too talented for the rather mediocre talent pool making up that band. Kind of a shame, considering he's not that much older than I am.

And I really hope this isn't some drug or alcohol related death, cause I really don't understand the whole "all the cool kids are doing it!" mentality of drug abuse. I quite like sobriety, thank you very much.

Avenged Sevenfold is my favourite, I'm not sure I want them to continue after this. The Rev had a really big influence on their music and he's written many songs himself like Almost Easy and Afterlife. Take a look at the lyrics at Afterlife, it's the exact situiation The Rev is in atm. A7X is my biggest music influnece and Jimmy was an awesome drummer.

Once again I'm not a big fan of A7X, but they are definitely above the average in terms of talent pool. We all agree The Rev was an awesome drummer, and Synyster Gates may lack the fame of other guitar heroes due to his young age, he's clearly immensely talented.

Justice for All is the first thing that came to my mind when I heard people saying they should quit. Imagine if Metallica had called it quits.

Also, I've seen several sites saying he died of "apparent drug overdose." This guy was a heavy drug user, and at the age of 28, natural causes seems highly unlikely.

Just my two cents.

Condolences to the band & co.

I can kinda see how he died of "natural causes" even at such a young age. A Rock drummer's physical risks are the same as any marathon runner's. The heart, lungs, muscles and metabolics are driven quite far in such intense music. Without proper precautions and afterward methods, it's not really a surprise that the body gives up.

Once more, R.I.P.

I admit that I don't like post-Waking the Fallen Avenged Sevenfold. What I despise even more is that now people will compare them to Zep, due to the passing of their drummer. I don't much like Zep but it is common knowledge that much of the world believes Led Zeppelin to be one of the greatest bands ever. I don't ever want to hear the term "greatest bands ever" and hear Avenged Sevenfold anywhere in that category, BUT the matter at hand is human life, and between music and human life we all know what matters. It's tragic to hear of Jimmy Sullivan's passing, especially at 28 and also during the holiday season. Tragic as hell. Rest in peace.

By natural causes, it probably means that he did so many drugs so many times in his past, and his body just shut down, or he had a heart attack because of it, or something. Really, it means that he didn't OD, but it definitely doesn't rule out drug use.

Yeah, or that in Ca, drugs is classed as a natural cause of death.

I think the best thing for Avenged Sevenfold to do is to keep going and keep making music, regardless of this tragic loss. Metallica kept going after they lost Cliff, so why can't A7X do the same? After all, A7X looks up to Metallca. I know Cliff was a bassist and The Rev was a drummer, but still there is so much potential left in the band and they were supposed to release a new album soon. I am sure that Jimmy would want the band to keep going and not stop just because of his death. True they lost an amazing drummer, and song writer, but they can't just call it quits when they are this young.

KEEP GOING A7X!

FYI regarding the natural causes thing: all that means is that it was neither a homocide nor a suicide. That's why the autopsy was inconclusive and they're awaiting toxicology for results, which will take weeks. I wasn't totally suprised by the news, but I am very sad. Not only was he a phenomenal drummer, but I really always felt he was the personality of the band off stage. Some of those youtube clips of him are priceless.

This is really a terrible loss to music.
However, I think it is ignorant to call Jimmy the only talented member of the band. All of them have talent, but they will definitely be different without Jimmy involved if they decide to continue music, which I hope they do. Rather than take this as a time to pronounce Jimmy the best and the rest of the band as lackeys, I think this would be a better time to pass on respect to Jimmy, his family, and the four other guys in Avenged Sevenfold who are suffering a loss that is hitting them immensely harder than us.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — An autopsy is inconclusive as to the cause of death for Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan.

Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Tuesday that the coroner's office ordered toxicology, microscopic and laboratory tests to help determine why Sullivan died. It's expected to take several weeks to get the results of the tests.

the first thing I thought of when he died was, comically, "now the stallion duck has no friends," but a few seconds later it made my already irritating day even worse. I feel bad since he was only 28, and having known OF him for six years, I had expected for him to live a lot longer. I will miss him.
But he's done pretty damn well for a guy who used to live in a Laundromat. "You know, you'd think living in a Laundromat would mean you have such clean clothes...but that's not true." -The Rev

On an ironic note, this is what he sings in "Afterlife": "I am unbroken, I'm choking on this ecstasy/Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live."

RIP dude.

Eh, actually I'm right and you're almost right. It doesn't necessarily mean drugs. He could have had a heart defect, or an aneurism. Drugs or alcohol are only a possible cause, not probable. Hence, as I noted, it was listed as natural causes because it was neither murder not suicide. Re-read what I posted.

I'm actually having arguments with friends that are deciding to talk sh*t about A7X at this time. If you can't respect life, then who do you expect will honor yours when you die?... My two cents

I personally hope A7X do NOT make any more music after this.

The Rev fuelled the bands sound, he was the backbone, and the guitars worked off his drumming.

He really made up the band, and their sound will never be the same without him.

Such a sad thing. 2009 claims another.
RIP Rev.

They've known eachother since they were kids and theyve been a band since before 1999 so these guys are like a second family. It just sucks to know that The Rev is gone now. A7X has been one of my favorite bands and a big influence on me for a long time. I just hope that this is the end of them. If James' family, friends or bandmates happen to be reading this, my deepest prayers and condolences go out to all of you. In Loving Memory of James Owen Sullivan.

Tragic news, upsetting that somebody so young and gifted would be killed, but you've got to think they feel like total dbags signing a letter like that with those ridiculous stage names: M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, and Johnny Christ. I think that really takes away from the sincerity of their message.

For him to just be gone so soon and so abruptly is just too much. My heart goes out to the band and his other friends and family. I know this must be extremely hard for all those who knew him well. There's no way A7X can replace him, he was just too much. I just hope they can figure out what to do and press on with whatever decision they make.

I agree with most people that it maybe was brought on by previous drug abuse, but the actual dying part was not because of an overdose or etc. I feel it's like the wrestler Eddie Guerrero who just simply died because of drug abuse from 20 years ago.

Or it could be like Dave Williams from Drowning Pool who abruptly died at 32 because of an undiagnosed heart condition. It could be anything, but the bottom line is that the rock world just lost an incredible drummer, and while I would never say replace the Rev, I will say that I hope A7X can find a "permanent fill-in" for the Rev and continue to make music because that's what the Rev would want

RIP REV

I genuinally almost cried when I heard this - and I didnt even do that when Michael Jackson died and i was meant to go see him. He was an immensely talented drummer - you only have to listen to the intro to 'Almost Easy' to hear that - and he will be sorely, sorely missed.

Anyway, I reckon A7X will continue. AC/DC, Metallica, Alice in Chains and Evile have all lost band members and continued (The only band, to my knowledge, that won't continue in these circumstances are Pantera - Anselmo has ruled out any reunion even if it's only for a gig.) I fully believe that they will find a new drummer and record the new album they have in the pipelines, probably as a tribute to Sullivan. I also believe that they will want to continue for Sullivan's sake - bit of an old cliche, but I wouldn't be surprised if they came back and said 'We are gonna do this new album because The Rev would want us to'.

However, I also believe that we will see a definite shift in A7X's musical direction. The new drummer will bring his own ideas and influences to the table and this will bring about a change. Whether good or bad, we will have to wait and see.

Once again, my thoughts and prayers are with his wife, his family, the band and his friends. R.I.P Jimmy, you were an absolute king.

Can we all be realistic here? Pay your respects but don't be foolish enough to call him one of the drummers or metal songwriters ever. People with any musical knowledge, especially in the drumming department are going to laugh at you and point to people such a Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and jazz drumemrs like Steve Gadd. The worst thing you can do for a deceased musician is overrate them to the point that a lot people hate their music. For specific examples, see Kurt Cobain and Dimebag Darrell. I'm not trying to be an ass here but respect talent but don't make it out to be more than it was. When you overrate something, people realize it and will stand against it.

I've got a list:
1. Overdosing on illegal or prescription drugs
2. Alcohol Poisoning
3. Not in Rev's case, but being extremely obese.

BUT, I have heard somewhere that he had stomach cancer. Until that has gone through and been either clarified or dismissed, let's drop the other ideas for the time being. How horrible would we all feel if it was stomach cancer. Come on now.

Either way, R.I.P.

Nobody asked for your opinion on drugs or alcohol. "All the cool kids are doing"...drug abuse? Trust me anyone that abuses drugs would not call themselves cool or advise anyone to do it. People (like myself) that choose to smoke one every now and then certainly don't do it because "all the cool kids are".

It's obvious also that you wouldn't know much about a talented guitar player Sinister Gates, AX7 isn't exactly my cup of tea but he can play the shit out of a guitar.

So next time unless someone asks for it, keep your jaded one sided and biased opinions to your damn self.

Dear God, I pray James The Rev Sullivan is in a little piece of heaven in the afterlife making the angels scream. He seized the day in bat country then burned it down, his unholy confessions trashed and scattered. We gave him the strength of the world and he gave a us a second heartbeat. He is MIA, but will walk on through thick and thin to the wicked end.
A Synyster man who will leave his Shadows behind and stirkes with a Vengeance, fearing no Christ for he is a Plague. Rest in peace

James Sullivan. Taken from us too early, blessed with the talent and love for music. He is and always will be one of the greatest musicians ever to grace our ears. But as all good things, it appears as if he was too fragile to walk the earth for too long. We may remember him as he was, a great musician and overall a gr...eat person. He was graced with the ability to show emotions and express himself through his music, everyone felt it. We all dread his loss, but there will always be a place for him in our hearts. As my greatest influence out of anyone in Avenged Sevenfold, I feel truly devastated that he is no longer with us physically. He will always be remembered. My thoughts and condolences go out to the entire Avenged Sevenfold Family.

He will never be forgotten. Not in the hearts of his fans. Not in the hearts of his friends, his family. And most of all, he will never be forgotten in the hearts of his bandmates. They will never be 'Avenged Sevenfold' without him.

Everyone mentioned is and will always be incomprehendibly sad, yet proud of you, Rev. You changed the music industry. You changed the world.

Rest in peace, Jimmy Sullivan. Our hearts will always beat for you, just as your body, mind, and soul did for us since 1999.

Rest in peace James. We love you.

Put aside the fact that he was an extremely talented drummer in a band which has been going up and and up in recent years, anybody who is a fan of A7X will know just how close the five members are. They grew up together, they have been best of friends for ever and ever. Any interview u see with them they always mention how they are best friends and how much they love each other. For any one of them to die so suddenly is an unbelievable tragedy. Imagine if your best friend was to drop dead out of nowhere. This is truely horrible news.

NOBODY better make fun of this. Death is very real, and very tragic. Its always funny until it happens to you or someone close.

R.I.P Jimmy. You helped create unique music. Music so unique, people who are typically judgmental can't comprehend

Whether you liked Avenged Sevenfold, Pinkly Smooth (his other band), or Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan as a person, at LEAST have the common decency to see the tragedy in his death, and for the fans who feel sorry for THEMSELVES, think about how the band and Jimmy's family feels. Your sadness is nothing compared to theirs.

In the very least, I am sad for his death. Me and a few of my other fellow A7X fans spent time mourning for him. Although there's nothing we can do about it, at least we can care and try to understand that we don't deserve any sympathy. Jimmy, and his friends/ family do.

Rest in peace, favorite drummer of mine. Your songwriting, drumming, vocals, and most of all humor/personality, will never be forgotten by those who truly care.

Why is it we have so many ****s in this world who need a good hard lesson in learning to respect the dead?

Whether you hate them or not, look at the wider ****ing picture - we have a very talented guy who was in a very successful band who has died suddenly at the all-too-young age of 28. You cannot deny he wasn't talented, and you also cannot deny that A7X are a very successful band. It's tragic that he died so young and when the band were about to record a new album and possibly scale even bigger heights than previously.

Forget all the points that you might have against A7X, The Rev or anyone else and just pay your respects, for ****'s sake. If you can't do that, then there is no point in commenting on here and we don't want you around.

Anyway, rant over. As said above, it's an absolute tragedy that he died and my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, his family and the band. R.I.P

fyi, dying of natural cause in a context of investigation means the defunt neither was murdered nor commited suicide. So saying someone died at 28 of natural causes only means that, and is not, in whatsoever way, implying something unusual.

One of my favourite drummer and singer (Pinkly Smooth was good too) He will be missed.

I'm not really sure if they'll be able to find a replacement, not that there aren't drummers that could handle the job, but they were all really close and it is way more important than any aspect involving musicianship.

Jimmy was the heart and soul of the band and its a shame to see him gone. No matter how he died, 28 is still waay to young of age for someone to even have death on their minds. Horrible news. RIP Jimmy. I hope this doesn't spell the end for A7X, I don't think he would have wanted them to stop though.

Still, not trying to be harsh but his death may have been his own doing, he always came across as a bit crazy and he didn't have the best upbringing and was probably involved in drugs when he was young.

What's the big deal about that band anyway? No loss for music, but it's really sad someone died at such a young age from natural causes. From someone that tattoed, being in such a band I'd expect he died of a big drug overdose, but at least he didn't.

natural causes doesnt necessarily rule out drug overdose. In fact at 28 years old it seems like the most valid explanation. Yes, I know, its possible to die of natural causes at a young age, but its a slim chance.

Damn, this sucks. My interest in Avenged Sevenfold has decreased over the past few years but The Rev always stood out to me as a talented musician and all around cool guy. R.I.P. Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan.

If Avenged Sevenfold replace him (which I think will be hard not so much because of his drumming but the uniqueness of his vocals and other talents he brought to the table) that is their choice, but I wouldn't be devastated if they stopped making music. Not trying to bash them, just saying I think it would be understandable.

Shadows has a voice that (admittedly may take a little getting used to) is unique to the music industry and is amazing haveing said that. Synyster Gates is probably the most talented guitarist of the time at the moment, just watch him play.

You can't say some of the creativity he's come up with doesn't make him skilled. He is. And then theres Zacky.. It's not just Syn that comes up with guitar duels.. He does too. The third paragraph of the article says the coroner's office is investigating the death, that means cause of death is unknown until all the results/facts are obtained. "Natural causes" at that age are very few, and rare. Un-natural causes are much more likely, as in druga and/or alcohol.

it is sad that such a talented drummer had to die at such a young age. right when avenged sevenfold was in their prime. but it was most likely because of drugs or misuse of alcohol. i mean the autopsy was inconclusive, but its kinda logical these guys were party animals! its such a shame that drugs can destroy a life. even great drummers like the rev.

Two words. Micheal. Jackson.

Ok sorry not JSUT two words but i need to explain myself.
Micheal Jackson was beaten down by the media and practically everyone else for the rape thing. He was either hated or ignored by a large part of the community... until he died. Then he was magically forgiven and everything he had supposedly done was overlooked. He sold more CD's when he was dead than I alive, I think.
This isn't a Micheal Jackson bashing comment, i'm just trying to make a point.

That point is simply irrelevant. Michael Jackson remained to be the greatest pop artist in musical history, still having many millions of fans. A7X are a somewhat popular metalcore group. I'd see your point if you had used an artist similar to Avenged's status, but to use Michael Jackson was a stretch that turned into a complete tear.

Damn, never seen so many comments in response to one article.

It's gonna be hard for A7X to move on further without Jimmy. Especially considering their latest material was revolving to include him more and more, i.e. the backup vocal-work he put into their latest self titled.

Natural causes, I doubt it. Most likely a heath ledgers scenario, alchohol and something potentially harmless such as a sleep aid or some medication not mixing right. However, I severely disagree outright with anybody incinuating his death was drug related, considering the band was started to escape a lousy life in cali. They went back to their hometown when they had the money to sustain a decent life there, but if they were druggies, they would've stayed there to begin with and got dead-end jobs for drug money.

Either way, he'll be missed.

Jesus this is terrible and so unexpected. Avenged Sevenfold are the greatest band of the last 25 years and I'm not just saying that as a fan, musically they are genious as well. The Rev and Synyster Gates in my opinion are the most talented in the band but now The Rev's gone. I really, really hope they continue but you could almost guarantee they will take a while off, even though they're halfway through an album but even if they do continue I don't think they'll find a drummer as good as he was.

Also, anyone who is confused about the 'natural causes' that he died from-natural causes simply means anything that didn't involve human intervention. So basically just about anything you can die of. They generally say natural causes if they have no clue or don't want people to know for some reason.

True, Keith Moon and Bonham aren't drummers at all...

Saw these guys in Glasgow and again supporting Maiden at Twickenham. The Rev was indeed a central part of the band, but I hope they carry on. Someone else said it first, though I can't find the comment now. It's arguable that 'Tallica didn't reach their peak until after Burton died.

...And Justice For All was not their best. It was either Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightning. I'm not saying that Metallica should have stopped after that, but after Cliff died they went in a different direction.

As for The Rev I heard that they might be suspecting drugs as a cause for his death which would not surprise me. He seemed like the kind of guy that would do drugs and such.

you know, saying that an album is the best really isnt the right thing to say because maybe there are some people that like that album more than another, but saying that something is the best is really just your opinion! also, i dont really listen to a7x but still sad to see a great drummer pass away

The good ones always die so god damn young!
I don't know why the good people always have to die suddenly. Why can't it be a serial killer or rapist or something? This is why I don't believe in a "God". A good "God" wouldn't let things like that happen. If he was so high and mighty he could control things like that.

But, none the less,

RIP Jimmy, your amazing talents and short lived life will live on forever in our hearts. You'll be thoroughly missed by many dedicated fans and friends.

It's possible. Many people have underlying problems that they are unaware of until it really effects them in death or something else very serious. But, they'll find out in the optopsy(sp?). Right now they're just saying that it LOOKS like he died of natural causes.

the rev's maybe one of the best metalcore drummers out there. i respect the man's talent. i wonder what happens next to A7X. maybe they should release their fifth album dedicated to THE REV and all the fans of their music. and i think THE REV recorded some of his stuff for the fifth album. hope to hear it mixed with the other members' stuffs. Whatever their decision is I am sure that it is for the best. By natural causes, it probably means that he did so many drugs so many times in his past, and his body just shut down, or he had a heart attack because of it, or something. Really, it means that he didn't OD, but it definitely doesn't rule out drug use.

according to mtv news the autopsy was inconclusive, and they're waiting on the toxicology results, so he might have OD'd...i'm sure when the results come back the fans'll be updated one way or another.

This just sucks...I mean in my personal opinion The Rev was the best part of that band. I really don't believe they can write great music without him.

As for comparing them to Led Zeppelin, I think Zeppelin quit because they weren't all that great without John Bonham. John was on another level, kind of like the Rev is to Avenged.

Obviously I'm not going to say that he was the best ever, that's way too cliche and unfit for him, even Bonham doesn't really attain that title well, but he was a great versatile player.

You make a very good point, just what i was thinking except you managed to put it into words.

And I'm not an Ax7 fan, but it really is a shame for anybody to die so young without fully realising their potential, condolences to Ax7 and to Revs family.

A message to all those who don't like Avenged Sevenfold or Jimmy, fine its personal taste but just leave these forums alone and leave it as a tribute to a fine drummer instead of having a go at the band.
Its also ironic how he always said when he was a kid that he would be a rockstar and wouldn't see 30...

This isn't cool.

But if he was such a prolific songwriter, how come he only did Piece of Heaven lol.

He did much more than just A Little Piece Of Heaven, on their self titled cd alone he wrote A Little Piece Of Heaven, Brompton Cocktail, Afterlife and Almost Easy, 4 of the 10 songs on the album, including 2 radio hits. Not to sure about the rest of their albums, but be sure to hear more works of his on Nightmare.

Jimmy was one hell of a musician, he wrote Almost Easy, Afterlife, Brompton Cocktail, A Little Piece of Heaven, Welcome to the Family, Fiction, and Save Me
as for COE and before, idk what he wrote
but i wouldnt be surprised if he did major contribution to it, because theres alot of Jimmy-ish style in it
and i cant forget Pinkly Smooth
i wish he made more music in there with Brian (Syn Gates) :/
RIP James, your legacy lives on through your music
and hopefully you influenced alot of musicians to make unique styles
