Active Rock Chart Features First Female Vocalist At #1

Memphis-based hard rock band Skillet are celebrating their first-ever #1 Active Rock song with "Awake And Alive", which went from #4 to #1 this week, reports Billboard.com. In the Active Rock chart's 14-year history, this is the first of the chart's 143 #1 songs to feature female vocals, as drummer Jen Ledger sings with the group's frontman John Cooper on the track.

Skillet recently released a remix EP, "Awake And Remixed", which features alternative versions of songs featured on the band's RIAA gold-certified album, "Awake". The album, Cooper says, is about trying to keep the faith in a challenging world.

"Every time I turn on the TV, it's like, 'Really? Another sex scandal?'" Cooper told Audio Ink Radio. "This is absurd, from wars to violence going on all the time. It's a scary time to be alive, and it's an easy time to lose your faith."

Skillet is currently on the Avalanche Tour 2011, alongside Stone Sour, Theory Of A Deadman, Art Of Dying and Halestorm, which tours various U.S. cities through April and into early May.

It's good to see that Skillet's getting some recognition, although I do wish the publicity had come when they were promoting Comatose, which is a much better album in my opinion. Still, "Awake and Alive" is the most well-written song on their new album so I'm happy to see that it went to number one.

Just so everyone knows who thinks Skillet is a dumb name.. The band kinda does too. At least john cooper does. They called it skillet at first because the band was the result of each individual pitching in their musical ideas. The name stuck though. Glad they're getting some kinda recognition.. And if ya ever get the chance go see them live. Best stage presence i've seen for a rock band. And they interact with the crowd a ton.

Actually, I don't think she's hot at all, and every song I've heard by them had a guy singer. I think Active Rock might just be like modern rock/generic stuff. Hopefully this will mean that the good stuff wil now be filtered through this active stuff.

I'm surprised Paramore hasn't been on this list, or Evenescance. Those are both quite popular bands that have done well even on the pop charts. Grace Potter and the Noctournals are also having a lot of success on VH1 at least, idk if they're active rock though, if my definition is correct. They'd deserve the recognition too much to actually get it though. Plus their singer IS actually hot and not average looking.

Active Rock I just found out are music stations that play new rock bands as well as some classic rock bands that blend well with newer sounds. They allow more Heavy Metal influence in their selections. SIRIUS radio's Buzzsaw is an active rock station

This would lead me to beleive I was right. Post-Post-Grunge waste products that don't do their influences justice. Someone else stated "Pirate Rock" in another news thread.

Good for them, but it's just further proof that the industry has spread out and watered down these charts (I never understood the difference between contemporary rock and mainstream, or how a band can chart on both or some on one and not the other). Everybody can have a #1 hit on some type of chart! Especially when they're #1 on a chart that few people have even heard of.

It's sad, but the charts are almost meaningless anymore.

It's kind of a half and half thing on the original 'awake' version, and I doubt much will have changed on a remix. Although it is slightly more than backing vocals, I do agree its a bit of a technicality issue xD

and all the other bands have such profound lyrics? I mean come on Korn is one of the most successful metal bands and nearly every song is based around someone hurting his pussy feelings. And bands like Three Days Grace. Mudvayne. Papa Roach. All these bands have the common gene here. They got their feelings hurt by someone so now they write songs about it which even though they are professional sound uneducated and amateurish.

I wonder if anyone really listens to Skillet or just assumes that they are talentless simply because they are on the radio. If Alter Bridge was played every 25 minutes on the radio would you say the same thing? They blend symphony with hard rock and are quite good at it. Their lyrics are actually meaningful, whether you're Christian or not. Ben, when he was with the band, was an excellent songwriter and him and John together are brilliant. Jen is also the background singer and drummer and live the quartet is phenomenal. They also tend to get quite heavy. I strongly suggest looking deeper than Monster (possibly their worst song).

Christian music is usually pretty annoying and no one gives it the time of day but these guys have done pretty good and they absolutely ARE talented, I saw them in concert a few years ago and it was pretty amazing musically. I never said those other bands have profound lyrics, just pointing out the facts about Skillet. I also wouldn't say Korn's lyrics sound uneducated and amateur, especially old Korn, but Davis' songs mostly do talk about the same subject, which gets old.

It's just hard for me to respect a band that rhymes "man" 8 times in the same song. It doesn't even sound like they're trying.

Skillet is a great band. There are those who don't think they're great cause either they're Christian or cause they never heard of them. Listen to the band first then make a decision and even if you still don't like them no need to hate on the music just move on.

This news post is.. IDK, just not very interesting (LOL active rock), I guess. I've known Skillet for quite some time, and I just find them not horrible just a tad boring and predictable.

But they seem to have some fans almost wherever I go, so they must be doing something right. My advice: If you are going to give them a listen, stay away from hero and monster. God, I hate those songs.

I agree. Skillet is great! Just like Switchfoot, all they want is to be a bridge to the non-Christians to show them that Christians can still have fun. People don't need to be so disrespectful about it. They're doing a great job at being that bridge, if they weren't, they wouldn't have a number one song right now. And for the people that don't understand, it says to "feature" female vocals, not "completely female vocals for the whole song." Jen is a great singer, and is very successful for a 21 year old, she sings back up and has a few solo parts.

and all the other bands have such profound lyrics? I mean come on Korn is one of the most successful metal bands and nearly every song is based around someone hurting his pussy feelings. And bands like Three Days Grace. Mudvayne. Papa Roach. All these bands have the common gene here. They got their feelings hurt by someone so now they write songs about it which even though they are professional sound uneducated and amateurish.

First off, there are hundreds of other bands out there that do actually have pretty good lyrics. Plus, having hurt feelings and love are pretty much what songs are about. It isn't like they're narrow topics.

I love the comments about how anyone insulting Skillet is hating on them because they're Christian, or because that person "didn't give them a chance." This seems to me like crediting Daron Malakian as #1 vocalist for a song off SOAD's first album... only SOAD is awesome and Skillet is not

personally, i love Skillet. Awake isnt their best album, but its still good. and i expected comments like this, because there is no such thing as a band that everyone likes. you either like their music or you dont. then continue with life, and listen to what you like instead of bashing other bands

Yeah I know! They play the same open C power chord over and over again! It's SO AMAZING! Honestly I've seen this band a few times at Sonshine and I must say, for a Christian band, they are really out for attention. Plus the lead singer says the word "Awesome" in every sentence. Also, they don't help their fans understand some of the publicity they get. At this Christian music festival, a group held up signs that said "Jenny can I get your number? 867-5309". Their pyrotechnics show was okay though...
