Adele Breaks The Beatles, Pink Floyd US Chart Record

Adele's second album "21" has spent 16 weeks at the top of the US Billboard 200 chart, meaning that it has now broken records set by both The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

The Tottenham bred soul singer has now matched the success of the soundtrack to the 1997 film "Titanic", but beaten The Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall", both of which topped the US charts for 15 weeks a piece. Adele now has the record for the longest running US chart topping album by a British artist.

Last week Adele sold 104,000 more copies of "21", in addition to the 17 million copies that the album has already sold globally.

New research recently revealed that Adele's singles were the most popular karaoke tracks in 2011. The singer's chart topper "Someone Like You" was the most sung song of the year with one in four singers choosing the track, according to the Lucky Voice website.

Her cover of Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love", from her debut "19", was also the second most popular choice after it accounted for 10 per cent of three million tracks chosen by 100,000 users. Adele has also been named as one of the favourites to win big at at this year's Brit Awards by bookmakers.

Adele is the overwhelming favourite to pick up the gong for Best Album for her second LP "21", with William Hill giving her odds of 2/7.

While I'm inclined to believe that the impact The Beatles and Pink Floyd have had on music is and always will be far greater than hers, you have to take into account that those two bands were HUGE back in their prime, and if their type of music wasn't what was "popular," they never would have attained the success that they did. I've honestly never even heard any of Adele's songs, so I'll reserve judgement on her for now/

Of course the Wall and Sgt. Peppers are better but we need to make room for newer artists. The reason Adele's album has sold, despite the fact that it's nothing spectacular is because the music industry has been deprived of honest, from the soul music that can still be commercial for years. I'm really confused as to why people would freak out and say she isn't legendary like the beatles or floyd, when of course she's not legendary because she's relatively new and is current. The beatles weren't 'legendary' when they were going, sure they were loved, but I think they achieved legendary status over time and people kept enjoying them.

Why can nothing of our new generation be allowed to one day be compared to stuff from the 60s, 70s, or 80s? Sure the best stuff isn't always mainstream but give the present a chance, otherwise nothing will be good and future generations will be told that they have nothing to look back on in this generation and think 'wow, that was great.'

I'm glad to see that most people have been rational about this. What the people who are upset about this fail to realise is simultaneously a lot bigger and a lot smaller than at was in the 60s. Bigger because we have a hell of a lot more people, smaller because we're all connected through the media (particularly the internet). Of course modern albums are going to sell more than albums 30, 40, or 50 years ago. It wouldn't make any sense if they didn't. It doesn't diminish the quality of those past albums, it doesn't lessen the impact of those artists, and it doesn't automatically mean that these new artists are going to be remembered as musical genii in several decades to come. Music isn't about selling records, it's about music. If you've got your panties in a bunch over this, I feel sorry for you.

Kudos to Adele for reaching this milestone, and kudos to the public for giving it to someone who can actually sing.

You don't even have to listen to Pink Floyd to know that they are far better than "mediocre stoner rock." Just read the lyrics to something like (and I hate to use the most cliche song of theirs, but...whatever) "Wish You Were Here." "Did they get you to trade/your heroes for ghosts/hot ashes for trees/hot air for a cool breeze/cold comfort for change," is one of the most moving things I've heard to date.

But this isn't about Pink Floyd, its about Adele, and while I'm not the biggest fan of her second album personally, I know why so many are, and its because she's a talented lady. Congrats.

Keep in mind that during the times of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, there was TONS of competition for the charts.

In the times of Adele, there are none. Even though she is an amateur compared to those greats, she doesn't really have any competition, which is why nobody can knock her out of the charts.

The only reason this bums me out is because Florence and the Machine and the Black Keys just released pretty stellar albums. I think Adele's pretty good, with an amazing voice, but "Rolling in the Deep" aside, nothing that's made me want to listen to her all the time. I think Florence has a much more powerful voice, and both Flo and the Black keys are making more interesting music.

lets be honest 90% of artists that made it big 20+ years ago wouldn't be famous if they started out in 2012. The focus in genre has changed from rock to pop and will probably stay for some years to come. In 20-30 years people will probably see katy perry and adele the way we see the beatles and pink floyd with the younger generation getting older. Talent plays little part in making popular music and Adele is setting records because people enjoy listening to her.

Not trying to discount this, as I do enjoy Adele's music (it takes quite a bit to grab my ear if it's Pop), but this isn't really a real measurement of popularity.

There were less people listening to music back then, therefore, there were less plays. Reaching that many weeks at that age was considerably harder than it is today with the amount of exposure that a popular musician gets on mainstream media.

While still noteworthy, it's not as impressive as the Beatles' stay on the charts during their era due to the fact that that staying power was hard to maintain in the days of limited markets.

Adele isn't that great of a singer. She's good, yes, but outside of pop music there are literally thousands of people who she "couldn't hold a note" to. And I'm hardly a Pink Floyd fan but to say that Adele has better song writing capabilities is questionable when every one of her songs is about the same thing.

Of course the PF are not great singers ( I personnaly think they did, Gilmour ha a very good and powerfull clean voice, while Waters had a tortured soulful voice especially on the Wall album, you cant always judge a voice by range or octaves, emotion and intention is the key) but we're talking about music wich includes:

- singing of course but lyrics too ( Waters lyrics are upthere, few writers can pretend to be on the same level),

- instruments ( they are all great musicians especially Gilmour who's in the top ten of the best guitarists ever, when Adele cant even play harmonica),

- and most of all there's composition, and sorry but the depth of a Wall or a Dark side of the moon will never be matched by a trendy girl singing the same old songs about being dropped by her boyfriend ( not even written by her)...

so man just quit talking about something you dont know about, if you think you can judge a rock band by the singers technical abilities, go back to american idol and feel free to pretend Celine Dion is the best artist outhere because of here vocal skills
