Alex Soria of influential Canadian rockers The Nils was killed when he was struck by a train earlier this week, according to a a spokesperson for Mag Wheel Records, reports MuchMusic. Bob Mould reportedly cited The Nils as an early influence on Husker Du, and their sound was key to the development of Canadian bands such as Change Of Heart, The Doughboys, and Sloan.
Alex formed The
Nils in Montreal in 1978 with his brother
Carlos at the age of twelve. The band went on to record the critically acclaimed "
Sell Out Young" EP and self-titled album in the late 1980's. After several years away from the band,
Alex revived The
Nils to record 1997's "
Green Fields In Daylight". In more recent years

Chino, which released one album in 1999.
