Alexi Laiho Gets Four New Signature Models

Children Of Bodom's Alexi Laiho, ranked one of the world's best guitarists, has four new Signature Series models introduced at NAMM 2009 from ESP and LTD. The ESP Alexi-Blacky, ESP Alexi-Scythe, LTD Alexi-600-Blacky, and LTD Alexi-600-Scythe will be available from ESP's network of dealers and international distributors.

The ESP Alexi-Blacky and ESP Alexi-Scythe both feature a neck-thru-body design at 25.5" scale, with a light alder body and maple neck with a 24-fret ebony fingerboard. High-end hardware on the models includes Gotoh tuners, an original Floyd Rose bridge, and a single EMG HZ F-H2 pickup. An MM-04 on-off boost switch is also built into the guitar. The Blacky model incorporates a metallic black satin finish with a gloss black stripe and black pearl sawtooth fret marker inlays, while the Scythe model is a white finish with a black pinstripe, and scythe-shaped inlays.

The new LTD versions of the Alexi Laiho Signature Series models offer very similar specifications, only substituting Grover tuners and a 1000 Series Floyd Rose tremolo.

"We've been very fortunate to have a relationship with a guitarist of Alexi's caliber for the last six years," says Allen Steelgrave, ESP's director of marketing and artist relations. "As is the case with all ESP and LTD signature series models, the new guitars are based on the artist's exact specifications, and we've worked closely with Alexi to create these updated versions of his main guitar."

Laiho has worked with ESP on all of his signature model guitars since 2003.

Most death metal guys use only their bridge pickup, and those that do hardly ever touch the tone knob. They focus on having one tone that gets the job done.

Also, about the pickup, what I find to be odd isn't that it only has a bridge pickup with just a volume knob, but that the pickup itself is an EMG HZ when Alexi has signed on with blackouts on his older models.

Highly doubt it. Alexi changes almost all of the harder solos on the older stuff to make it easier to play. He's even said in a million interviews that he doesn't really try live, he just thrashes around and puts on a "show" and that's fine, but still...he is pretty wank lives.

My favorite band, one of my favorite guitarists, but no where near the best...no where near...

I liked the opening music from the '06 headliner better.

Last thing, this is his NINTH sig guitar...just in ESP's, not even counting Edwards or LTD's or when they added the MM-04, OR the Custom Shop models...

Add all that, it's around 40 or so...

I agree I've never been to hyped to pkay someone's creation. It really takes away from the guitar you want out of making it. Although, I'd like to see what they created as far what it's like.

Volume is tone. How much volume you have on your guitar dictates how hard the tubes in an amp are pushed (ESPECIALLY with EMGs). He can probably get a variety of sounds with just a pickup and volume control. I can manage it with my Charvel which has the same specs, but I don't have tube amplification.

how hard you push your tubes does not dictate tone, per se, but more how driven your sound is. anyways, i've never seen alexi use his volume for anything other than to turn the sound OFF.
also, when your running a high-gain amp on its most distorted setting 100% of the time, there isnt much you can do about how hard you push the tubes.

Actually, he designs them, adn plays the Japanese versions live. The reason ESP made this American Scythe is because that was his first ESP custom, and it's one of his most desirable. And really they ARE all the same guitars with different color combos and inlays. There is the occasional pickup difference, but that's it.

Kudos for everything you covered. Although LFR as well as other licensed pieces of hardware are generally made from lower quality materials. But valid point though, I understand what you mean.

On topic, I personally wouldn't consider him one of the 'greatest guitarists'. He's very one dimensional, as stated, and not very versatile at all. And the innovation of his playing is comparable to any other modern 'metal shredder'. Sticking to the A natural minor scale typically, and simply running up scales, utilising simple major, minor, and diminished arpeggios, and fairly sloppily at that. I just don't consider him that good, and as stated earlier, his signature models are blatant copies of Rhoad's Jacksons, only with differing colours.

LFRs are harder to lock and wear down quicker. I know, I work with one on my Kramer (I let my friend borrow the FRII that came with it). They simply aren't as efficient as the originals.

To everyone asking about his pickup, he had passive pickups in his Jacksons with a mid preamp in the guitar. When he switched to ESP he had EMG build him a replica Jackson mid boost which was only in his personal guitars. Then when he switched to Blackouts he continued to use the mid boost and ended up not liking the SDs so he went back to HZs, and for the new models ESP asked if they could use his graphics and have EMG build them a special mid boost to put in the ESP models but not the LTDs.
