Alice In Chains To Premiere New Video

Alice In Chains To Premiere New Video

Alice In Chains is likely to premiere the video for the song "A Looking In View" at the band's official web site today (June 30), according to a date posted at the site. Two short teasers for the clip can be viewed here: Video 1, Video 2. Meanwhile, sources tell The Pulse of Radio that an official radio single called "Check My Brain" will head to rock stations in mid-August.

Alice In Chains' first collection of all-new studio material in 14 years, "Black Gives Way To Blue", is set for release on September 29 through EMI Music's Virgin Records label. The disc will feature the recording debut with the group of singer William DuVall, who first got behind the mic for the band's 2006 reunion tour after original vocalist Layne Staley died in 2002.

The album title first appeared on Amazon.com without any prior announcement from the band, who made their signing with Virgin official a couple of weeks ago through a press release that did not reveal a title or release date.

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell recently told The Pulse of Radio that Alice In Chains was "really proud" of the new record, adding, "Regardless of how it does, it's a win already for us, 'cause we really dig it and we stand behind it, and each other."

Alice In Chains will play a small, intimate gig at London, England's Scala on August 4 — two days after playing the second stage at the Metallica-headlined inaugural Sonisphere festival, set to take place on August 1-2 at the legendary Knebworth Park, United Kingdom.

Alice In Chains will next perform on July 18 at Comerica Park in Detroit with Kid Rock. The group has yet to air any of the new material live.

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

It's two short teasers, how would you know?

Unless they've updated it, then I'll check it out.

How does a long song equate to a being more commercial? They have a couple of songs this long already (Frogs and Sludge Factory).

I didn't mean its length making it commercial, I just meant I hope they dont go for a mostly commercial sound on the new record. And yes, I know they have long songs already, but this should have only been about 5 minutes long, it kind of dragged on towards the end. Still an awesome song.

Since this is the first song people are hearing from the album, the band probably chose one of the catchier songs from the album.

I agree with Suav Nitebeest, its definitely probably one of the more catchier songs, and I'm sure their are a few more songs like this because when you're coming back, especially as an old gigantic successful band, you HAVE to get mainstream success,or you didn't comeback,so I'm sure this will be more Dirt than Jar of Flies...but If I can get just acoustic rhythm with a blues guitar solo somwhere...that'd be nice

William is doin a good job on vocals, even though it is kind of hard to hear AIC without Layne.

With that said, I enjoy the song! I think that it is heavy and sounds like the stuff on their self-titled album...even though it would be nice to hear more of a style from "Dirt"! Great riff, and it is nice to hear Jerry playing again

This is better than any of the music being released these days. I'm sure the rest of the album will be quite superb. William Duvall sounds like Layne here and there but brings his own style aswell. I'm already humming the verse and chorus. The bass sounds thunderous in the fisrt verse too. Excellent all around.

the song is really good, but i'm disappointed there isn't a guitar solo and the song sort of got repetetive towards the end. on the other hand, i have no worries about this album. especially after hearing this song.

I wasn't big on William DuVall singing Layne Staley's bits, but figured I'd enjoy him more on stuff that was actually written for/with/by him. Happy to know I was right!

The song certainly did sound like AIC. However, William Duvall is just missing that grit to his voice that set layne staley apart. That said, I liked Jerry's solo stuff and i'm sure this will be damn good.

It's an okay song. They wouldn't trail blaze with a song like this in the current market. Definitely not on the level of Wolfmother for instance). They are trying too much to rely on Jerry's vocals in the mix and need to turn him down a bit so Will can stand out with more clarity and presence. Overall, the vocals sound kinda early 2000s generic to me.

The drumming and guitar work is definitely Alice in Chains slow/heavy style. If this song were shorter I would probably like it more. It is definitely no smasher like Man in the Box, Rooster, or Down in a Hole. In a way I don't think it really stands on it's own feet. It would be a decent transition song between two better songs on the album. I don't think it is filler garbage like the song "Sickman", which is why I use the term "transitional" to describe it.

Jerry's guitar sound is definitely his trademark three amp setup (one producing lows, one producing mids, and one producing treble). It is the type of tone he uses on repetitive rythm tracks it seems.

Overall, I think it is an okay song, but I don't think it is all that great. Perhaps the desperation is gone; and with it, the magic, but I will wait for the full album to decide.

PowrSlave wrote on 07/01/2009 - 01:09 am / quote |
Oh, and I also think it sounds overproduced. The vocal layering is way, way overdone. Then again, I still thik they found the best production balance in Facelift, so what do I know?

badacidvacation wrote on 07/01/2009 - 01:16 am / quote |

this new song is great. i can't wait for their new album. first album in 14 years, and i can already tell it will be a big success. but in all actuality, i can't be saying much. i haven't heard all of their old songs, only the most popular ones like Rooster, Man in a Box, and a few others. but i'm sure the rest of their songs are just as great as those.

all in all, this album sounds like it is going to be a great success for AIC, and it's great to see them coming out with new music.

AWEE MAN!! I absoluetely LOVE AiC, and I was kind of skeptical about the new singer (i thought they should change the name, in honor of Layne, but then thought Van Halen...), but i heard "A Looking In View" on the radio (not 100% legally, but whatever haha) and it was MUCH MUCH MUCH better than expected. A lot heavier. I don't buy albums at all...but this may be an exception...

KurdtStaley wrote on 07/01/2009 - 02:05 am / quote |
pretty much exactly what i was expecting.. it's funny how people have read into this so much and have such ridiculous opinions on what the band is gonna be like when they don't know shit about it.

more than anything, i think the lyrical content is what's going to change, since that's what Layne influenced the most.
Obviously the sound isn't going to change much, only a retard would think that, since the sound is practically all Cantrell.

The song is alright but I was hoping for more of a Dirt sound, the song dragged a little bit and kind of had a death metal feel to it. The new singers voice kinda misses where Layne was so good cuz it misses all the blues in Laynes voice Would give it a 7/10.

pretty much exactly what i was expecting.. it's funny how people have read into this so much and have such ridiculous opinions on what the band is gonna be like when they don't know shit about it.

more than anything, i think the lyrical content is what's going to change, since that's what Layne influenced the most.
Obviously the sound isn't going to change much, only a retard would think that, since the sound is practically all Cantrell.

Um, are we not calling vocals sound anymore? Cuz uh, the original voice is gone, I would call that quite a change IMO, considering who it was and all... It sounded OK I think, better than what I expected.

I must say I've slagged Duvall off everytime he opens his mouth and sings Layne's words but he really puts in a solid performance here, can't wait for the album

Wow I have been waiting soo long for this, I was jumping about like a lunatic during my first listen! A lot of the music/riffs were actually revealed in the weekly studio updates they did so its cool to hear it all come together. Saying that for a 7 minute song I was expecting a classic Cantrell solo so I cant give it full marks. And I dont think we have heard the best of William just yet, Im sure he will really let rip in some of the other songs.

I don't want to be too critical, because I'd like to support Cantrell's effort to keep AiC going. I think the song's not bad, and I'll definately pick up the album, but it's clear Duvall isn't quite what Staley was. Cantrell controls this band now and Staley's tendencies towards the underground will be lost. I think Duvall sounds a bit too generic...not bad by any means, but a little generic. That concerns me because I would hate AiC to start sounding like one of the many generic bands that have MISERABLY failed to reproduce their early sound (Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, etc. etc. etc.), and become a parody of themselves. But let's hope that won't be the case, and let's give Duvall a chance. After all, it's difficult enough to fill the shoes of someone as talented as Staley, and it's not his fault Staley is gone...Duvall is just doing his best to honor his predecessor's memory.

No Layne, No AIC

No open-mindedness either I'm guessing? At least give it a chance dude, if it sucks, then you can say that about it. I know where you are coming from(and unfortunately you are probably right) but hey, here is to hoping for the best eh? I mean, Killswitch(completely different situation, considering the singer and all, but same basic principle) seems to be doing ok with a singer that wasn't the original(although Howard has been around in the band longer than Jesse was). But again, I know it isn't Layne, and probably won't work in the long run, just be open minded at the very least..

This isn't Layne but it's still a damn good song. They're definitely going into Dirt territory here. I'm liking it a lot

Ok so everybody agrees that you can't beat Layne Staley's voice, he just had that extra something that made AIC, well, AIC. But for f u c k ' s sake this is a hell of a lot closer than the last wannabe. (I dont even remember his name lol) Duvall isn't Layne, but he isn't bad either. 2 thumbs up for AIC. They're back.

I correct myself, Duvall WAS the last wannabe... now I'm nervous. Hopefully he can pull off this new album.

this song sucks tbh! the riffs good singings okish. and structures strange ,but if it had a solo it would have been an amazing song!

As somebody already mentioned, it's more like Jerry Cantrell solo work then 90s Alice. It's not a bad feature. I really enjoy both Jerry's albums, but... Vocals are way to much concetrated on Jerry, harmonies are not quite the same(Layne had a unique feel to it) and Staley 'goat-like' vocals are really missing. Anyway, it's still a ****ing great song. Hope the rest of the album have more 'AiC vibe'. Will see.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5 on initial listening, but there is something haunting in the combination of riff and layering of the vocals that is classic AIC. Reminds me more of songs on Dirt (like Rain When I Die, minus the bass line) than Facelift or Tripod.
