Legendary video director and founding Bathory member Jonas Ã…kerlund has spoken to Sweden's Expressen newspaper about the passing of Bathory mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg from what is believed to be heart failure. Forsberg, who was known to have been battling heart problems for years, was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday (June 7). He was 39 years old.
"It's so sad. He had much more to offer," Ã…kerlund said.
Jonas, who formed the band with Forsberg in the early '80s, went on to have a successful video-directing career, having worked with the likes of Metallica, Prodigy, Madonna and U2.
"Bathory came onto the scene extremely early," Ã…kerlund said. "People like Marilyn Manson, Billy Corgan and the members of Metallica have all come up to me and have told me that they listened to Bathory."
According to Ã…kerlund, it was Thomas Forsberg's creativity that made the band such an influence on so many younger metal acts.
"Quorthon had a high cult status," Jonas said. "He wasn't interested in attention, he just wanted to play his music."

: Fucking major bad news! I remember buying Bathory's first album when I was 15 years old (still have it). A great song-writer and one of death-metal's finest--! "Descend from blackened skies, on soundless magic wings, to spread the word of Satan, and live in eternal sin!" \m/POSTED: 10/04/2004 - 06:30 pm / quote |

Wow, **** you shitty Slipknot fan.
Go cut yourself. You have no taste in music and don't even respect one of the most influential icons in metal.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 09:04 pm / quote |

: BATHORY!! Better to comment late than never at all. Another legend is gone as old-school underground metal drifts further and further from people's memories. Wherever I am, it will be alive as will Quorthon's music. The pussy stuff people listen to today makes me want to vomit! I will always try to promote THRASH, DEATH METAL, GRIND, and EARLY BLACK METAL. The black metal scene of today was so heavily influenced by early BATHORY...it's just insane. The fans of REAL METAL are just lost voices right now. The scene was flirting with the mainstream at it's peak but now we're back underground where we belong. It doesn't matter if 95% of the people don't understand, the bonds made in the 80s/early 90s underground metal scenes will last a lifetime. Some of you know what the hell I'm talking about. RIP brother. THANKS for being the metal pioneer that you were. POSTED: 02/15/2008 - 10:38 pm / quote |

These types of comment are insulting; Quorthon was a genius and a true pioneer. But a guy who listens to Slipknot is probably too young to realize this.POSTED: 09/12/2008 - 09:35 am / quote |

Yeah, along with everyone else, slipknot suck.
Quorthon defined the genre along with Venom from Thrash Metal. Kind of funny that slipknot has 8 or so members and they can't write any decent scores.
Meh, at least he's jamming with the crew. Cliff B and Dimebag D. Now if they were on this plane of physical exsistence, pretty good ****ing band.POSTED: 01/30/2009 - 02:26 am / quote |

: someone already said it- better late then never.
Bathory's music is of a rare kind, it has a deep, true feeling in it that is really hard to find.
Quorthon's death prevented him from reaching yet more new places.

: Extreme metal is getting more mainstream these days. But if you ask most kids that go to shows and ask them about Bathory, they won't have a clue. Qourthon is a legend, and so many young people have never heard of Bathory. If you like Black, Viking, or Thrash, you will like at least one Bathory album. Long live the legacy of Qourthon, and let his music speak to all metalheads for years to come.POSTED: 07/28/2009 - 01:26 pm / quote |
