Be Your Own Pet Vs Emo

Be Your Own Pet have revealed that they turned down a place on the Vans Warped Tour in the US because they didn’t want to play with a bunch of emo bands.

The Nashville quartet were approached to take part in the hugely popular tour this year but the bill just wasn’t for them.

"It's not really our thing," Nathan Vaquez told the Washington Post. "We didn't want to be with all those other bands that are playing. All this emo-screamo stuff seems so overdone and pretentious and not real."

Instead they’ve been opening for their label boss, one Thurston Moore, and his band Sonic Youth and he respects them for their choices.

"Any rock band of 17-, 18-year-olds would love to do the Warped Tour. But they were like: No. Way. They see it as fabricated, moronic music and a propagation of dumbed-down youth culture, and it's who they tried to set themselves apart from in high school."

He added: "They just want to be in the van playing doughnut shops across America with their friends. They know that right now, that's the coolest thing they can do."

Thanks for the info to GIGWise.

Agreed. It annoys me when people say "down with emo" Because hell, there's genres I don't like, but I don't say DOWN WITH THEM! Emo's just a term to allow close minded gits to insult music they don't like. Any music they don't like becomes emo.

Woah I can't argue with there desicion because I wouldn't want to play a tour with bands that I personally don't like but the stuff they said about it seems stupid and the only wanting to play doughnuts shops across the country thing just seems dumb but mostly this seems like a publicity stunt to me

i have no beef with emo per se, but i agree that it's become overdone and a lot of it does seem very artificial now. good for them, turning down warped is something not many young bands would do.

why do you kids attack emo's like dude seriously emo bands never complain about metal or anything else....they are just there to do what they there to do....its people in metal that are making such a big deal out of this.....if it wasn't for other genres of music most of the bands you guys listen to wouldn't be here...just play music...respect the fact that its here....not attack it.....

YYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!

i have NO IDEA who these guys are but this article just expressed my feeling towards "emo" in EVERY aspect. maybe there was a time when it was sincere, "real" music. but now it IS fake, it IS shallow, and it IS as they put it, overdone. i have nothing but respect for these guys for this decision. you see all the other punk and rock bands on the warped tour that saw everything that was going on in ti and were still like "well its warped tour! lets play it anyway!". these guys stay true to themselves and the music, something i dont see enough of these days. wow, i am just so overjoyed that a band finally actually came out and said it. "emo"'s not music, its a fashion.

normally, i would agree with you. but we're talking about warped tour here, which has just become saturated with the kind of bands talked about in the article. "disgusting" is really the only word i can think of to describe that kind of music right now. i know what you mean though, people throw the emo tag around like a label for whatever they dont like, and thats wrong.

i give tons of credit to Be Your Own Pets. They stood for what they believed in and said what they felt. I realy respect that. I would kill to be on Warped Tour, and they turned it down/ That takes major balls.

now i gotta say this... i am "emo" but not b/c it is the "scene" thing to do. I love the music and the message, i write it. I actualy feel what i'm writing. and i do the guitr work for my band. so,.. yes it can be pretentions, fake, and/or played out. No arguement here, but some of it is honest. However it is a shame that bands like Fall Out Boy (who i do like) or Hawthorne Heights (who I can't stand) only play this type of music to make money. They are out their poluting the genre, and bands like Saves the Day are almost unknown.

i'm not trying to start anything here, but emo bands never start anything with metal bands because, well, your average emo kid is skinny and such, but your average metalhead is big. i think it's safe to say that a metal band is way more intimidating than an emo band. and the reason why, you say, metalheads make a big deal about it is because they are opposites. and also, it's not only metal people who make fun of emo, a lot of people do. my dad does and he listens to The Eagles. while i don't like emo (more of the way the kids act) i do like some of the music. again, i'm not trying to start anything, just giving my 2 cents.

as for the article, i don't know the band i do respect them for a decision like skipping warped tour. for it being the most unorganized summer music tour i would have probably made the same choice but on different grounds. only bands on the main stage get food and water(which in extreme summer weather, you need), you play at random times everyday and if you're playing a smaller stage, not many people see you. people who go to warped tour see the bands they want to see and that's it, and with them adding more and more stages every year there's only so many bands people can watch at one time. i watched smaller stages in '05 and there was never more than 20 people at them. anyways, don't know this band but respect their decision.

Emo bands wouldnt dare complain about any other genre because they know they wouldn't win in a publicity seeking slagging match- there's far more negative points about emo music than most genres.
