Where are all the rock acts? has this become the pop/hip-hop/hall of fame. I think is cool that they induct some rappers in there sometimes, but when there are more rappers than Rockers inducted....

wow the rock and roll hall of fame has really lost its credibility over the last few years. i really never had much respect for the hall, because they didn't let black sabbath in untill 2005, which is ridiclious!!

If the Beastie Boys dont come in first over those acts(Mellencamp is acceptable) then the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be burned down.

Beastie Boys weren't always rap dude. They use to rock out back in the day. Hell, they still do.

Leonard Cohen and The Ventures are the only 2 that sure-fire deserve it. If Madonna gets in and one of them doesn't then they should just change the name or burn the building down. Rock ain't there. PS- Where's Yes, King Crimson, Steely Dan, and Jethro Tull? Ugh...

Madonna?! OK, she's good at what she does, but that's never been rock or roll. So she plays a Les Paul in one song, and knows Gogol Bordello, but thats about as rock n roll as she gets.

Well done to the Beastie Boys though, they deserve it.

For some reason Leonard Cohen still seems to be underappreciated even though he is maybe the only lyricist to ever rival Lou Reed and Bob Dylan in terms of utter lyricism.

weak line up this year. Beastie Boys Deserve it...

I may be stereotyping, but i'm pretty sure Madonna hasn't even written most of her songs (like most pop-acts)I dont know how thats hall of fame worthy...let alone the fact shes not even rock and roll...

With that logic it's not a stretch to say Brittney spears could make it into the hall of fame 10-20 years from now..

i'll listen to tupac and bone thugs over MOST metal anytime, keep an open mind dude, i think that's what the R & R hall of fame is doing, recognizing iconic artists from all genres, cuz say what you want about her, Madonna is Madonna (coming from someone who doesn't even listen to her), she's one of the biggest music icons from the last 30 years...rock n' roll doesn't have to be just guitars and solos, as long as it rocks, as long as it moves you

Where is Rush, Bad Company, Peter Frampton, Iron Maiden, Journey, John McLaughlin(guitar god), Foreigner, Styx, Boston, Kansas, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull. The list goes on and on. Ridiculous!!! This maybe the worst list ever that they have nominated for 2008. This will be the first year since televised that I won't watch. Un- F*****believable. The outrage is mind boggling. I did not even consider any of these people that they have nominated for 2008. Not a single one. Man, were we all F***in wrong.

The definition of rock and roll has changed over the years. Get over it. EVERYONE listed there is rock and roll. And even if they aren't the R&R Hall of Fame is for music and all things related to it. Bands aren't the only people in there, journalists are, too.

Not even more than one. Tell me one Percy Sledge song besides "When a man loves a woman". He's in the Rock Hall. It seems that the pinheads who put together the list of nominees are pretty much out of touch with every generation.

+1 KINDA.
But I always felt that, while they obviously deserve it (don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan. Fave Band Ever!), I feel it would kinda kill a bit of the "Rush Feeling". Their preference was to stay out of the mainstream, and they never tried to be the most popular band in the world. I think that, if they were added, they would get attention that would make the special feeling lose a little edge.

But, on the other hand, +1!!

I'm sorry fella, but the key words in rock and roll hall of fame are ROCK AND ROLL. Rock music should ALWAYS take precedence over other genres at this thing. Rap is not rock and roll. Disco is not rock and roll. They aren't honoring "pioneering artists" they are trying to sell tickets to a damn dinner. Here, read this:

The main criticism is that the nomination process is controlled by a few individuals, such as founder Jann Wenner, former foundation director Suzan Evans, and writer Dave Marsh, reflecting their tastes rather than the views of the rock world as a whole. A former member of the nominations board once said:

At one point Suzan Evans lamented the choices being made because there weren't enough big names that would sell tickets to the dinner. That was quickly remedied by dropping one of the doo-wop groups being considered in favor of a 'name' artist ... I saw how certain pioneering artists of the 50s and early 60s were shunned because there needed to be more name power on the list, resulting in 70s superstars getting in before the people who made it possible for them. Some of those pioneers still aren't in today — but Queen is.

The rock and roll hall of fame is the biggest joke the music industry has ever had. I think that they should at least induct maybe the rock acts in before the rap and stuff. I still do not know why John Mellencamp is on the ballot and Rush, Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, Heart, Judas Priest, Peter Frampton, Aerosmith, KISS, and the Steve Miller Band was not even thought of. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should think about the people they are putting on the list instead of just almost anybody being eligible. If we wanted to induct the Beastie Boys in, why don't we just come up with a Music hall of fame in Oklahoma where anybody is eligible. You think they are going to put a nomination for Run DMC in next year. Go ahead Rock and Roll Hall of fame, put in the Beastie boys, but remember what you were set up on doing, putting influential ROCKartists into your hall of fame. Putting in rap groups is almost like putting a soccer player in the Baseball hall of fame. What a disgrace.

stop tyring to be eloquent, it is the rock and roll hall of fame, not pop and hip hop, and rap hall of fame. it's prety simple actually dude... otherwise they'd call it the "Whatever Moves You.... or Maybe Just Any Kind of Random Music Hall of Fame" which unfortuanately it has turned out to be. i'd really like rush to get in there by the way, what's up with that??? but then again, i'd rather them not be named with madonna, what a shame...

If it was truly a "Rock" hall of fame, then it would only have rock and roll bands inducted in it. That'd be like having a "Rap Hall of Fame" that inducts Led Zepplin or something.

Just saying.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted last year, and were officially the first rap group. Also, everyone seems to get so angry about their favorite band not getting in, or how do some bands ever beat out others, when they seem to forget that a band cant even be considered until 25 years after their first release of some type of album. yeah, there are lots of bands still looked over, but dont freak out over nothing

You're right about Grandmaster Flash, I forgot about them. But that's still only one group. But you have to remember that the Hall is ran by that damn Rolling Stone editor guy, so the inductees are based on how much some music writer likes them or how iconic they are, not based on the merit of the music.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is all about honoring music from the black tradition, really. After all, some if its first inductees are Aretha Franklin and BB King, neither of whom are rock & roll. So it's not really surprising that newer inductees are rap artist, especially since hip hop as a genre has been around for less than 30 years. This isn't a derivation for the Rock Hall. Now... the question is do YOU lack reading skills or are YOU just retarded? You said the WERE a hardcore punk band, as in past tense. Fact of the matter is they NEVER RECORDED ANY ALBUMS AS A HARDCORE PUNK BAND. Having distorted guitars does not automatically make you a rock band. Public Enemy has a live band backing them... Run DMC made music that featured distorted guitars, that doesn't make them rock. And if they are going to honor all music, it should not be called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are as close to being a rock band as Paganini was to being a rapper.

I never said was the black hall of fame. You apparently can't read. I'm saying that it celebrates music that has come from the black tradition, including what we call rock & roll, as well as soul, blues, R&B, rap, etc. The Rock Hall has always celebrated genres that aren't rock, per se, but share the same roots in black culture. Learn your popular music history.

Fact of the matter is they NEVER RECORDED ANY ALBUMS AS A HARDCORE PUNK BAND.

They never recorded any LPs, no, but they have countless EPs, singles and other assorted output to solidify them as a hardcore band at one point. It wasn't just a phase, they were influential as a punk band as well.

Regardless, if you keep treating the hall of fame like it's some balls-to-the-walls institute where only Led Zeppelin applies, you're an idiot. Might as well take out all of the blues, R&B, and funk acts. They're not rock bands either.

So how do they qualify more than the Beasties? The fact is, they're an influential band who have done more for music than you're willing to admit, and they absolutely deserve their spot.

Fact of the matter is, if we're talking influention Afrika Baambata deserves it more than any of the other nominees. He won't get it, because no one really knows who he is anymore though.

Are you retarded? Where do you think Rock even comes from?

Some good names on the list this year. Being mad about what bands DIDN'T make it so stupid...there are thousands of bands that could've made it but didn't. They can't pick them all. Just be happy because the Beastie Boys and the Ventures kick ass.

I'm not gonna argue about the Beastie's credibility here, there's no point but shit the bed man, Madonna? Even taking rock out of the equation, I'd say Metallica should be picked ahead of her (and I'm not even a fan!)

I'm also astounded that the likes of Maiden, Priest, Alice Cooper, Yes, RUSH!?!?!, Jethro Tull and DEEP FRIGGIN PURPLE haven't got in yet. I mean, screw a goose, it was Made in Japan that got me into classic (read: real) rock in the first place.

you sir are INSANE, the beastie boys are the most original band since the beatles, they transcend genres as they create them, THEY CREATED RAPCORE, no it wasn't Aerosmith + Run-DMC, License To Ill was rapcore just listen to No Sleep. But anyway THEY ROCK they are so original, none of their songs are similar, how can say "Fight For You Right" and let's say "Off The Grid" sound similar, they are Punk, Rap, Funk, and Alt. Rock. SO ORIGINAL!!!!!

First off, congrats to the beasties cuz if they get in they deserve it. Fuck everyone whos hating on the beasties and everyone whos bitchin about their favorite band not being in the rock n roll hall of fame. They cant just induct about 50 bands in one year, so alot of the bands that should be in will probably get in anyway some other time. And as much as i dont like most of the other bands or artists nominated this year (mostly madonna and donna summer), most people dont realize that most of those artist's genres stem from rock and roll and are therefore qualified as much as most people dont like it. Rap, for example, is starting to become in the rock n roll hall of fame because it stems from funk and soul music, which all started with rock n roll.

You can talk about open mindedness and branching out to other genres all you want, but the proof is in the pudding. This is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, not the lifetime musical achievement awards. It should be centered around Rock music. I'm not intolerant of other forms of music, I just believe if we're talking about rock we should talk about rock bands and rock music. Maybe my A.D.D. just isn't powerful enough. Beastie Boys are worth an induction, I don't question that. But we're missing out on alot of Rock acts that aren't seeing nomination and are being replaced by pop acts that slightly graze the genre of rock music.

Maybe it' time that the rock and roll hall fame change their name. since they put different musical genre's in there too. why not just call it the music hall of fame. that way no one would be left out and no one will get mad or confused. the beastie boys deserves to be in there. they used to be a punk rock band back in their early days. and never have i been a madonna fan but i think she also deserves it. she's been an influential female artist and became one of the best selling artists in the world.
