Adam Yauch, otherwise known as “MCA”, of the Beastie Boys has revealed in a video update that he was recently diagnosed with cancer in his preaortic gland and lymph node. While cancer of this type is very treatable when caught at such an early stage and he plans to make a full recovery, he has informed fans that any plans regarding touring and releasing their upcoming album, “Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1,” on September 15 have been postponed.
Yauch, who is joined by bandmate
Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz in the video, recalls when he first heard the news.
“About two months ago I started feeling a lump in my throat, like you feel if you have swollen glands or if you have a cold. I didn’t think it was anything,” he says.
“Then when we were in Europe recently doing promotion I started to think I should talk to my doctor. So I called my doctor when I got back, about two weeks ago.”
“He sent a specialist, they did tests and I have a form of cancer in a gland that's over here [he points at his left cheek],” Yauch adds. “It's in a gland called the parotid gland and it's also in the lymph node in that area.”
He goes on to say that the tumor appears to be localized in one area and will likely not affect his vocals at all.
“It's a bit of a setback, it's a pain in the ass, but it's treatable,” he adds. “In most cases they're able to completely get rid of it and people don't have continuing problems with it… if they've caught it early. That's the good news.”
He concludes with a message to the fans: “I apologize for anyone who's made plans or was psyched to come to these shows.”
