The comeback series of "Beavis and Butt-Head" sees the cartoon characters shouting at clips from reality TV shows instead of music videos – because modern rights laws have got in the way.
Mike Judge’s immature fanboys are remembered for commentating on music promos in episodes which ran for 200 episodes between 1993 and 1997.
Now they’re back – but will appear without the key element.
Judge tells Rolling Stone: "It used to be that we could do anything. Now we have to clear everything."
"We were going to do a Kanye West video – he wanted it on, and then somebody who owns, like, six percent of the songwriting said no."
Beavis and Butt-Head will appear sporting their Metallica and AC/DC shirts – but Judge even had to seek legal clearance for those details.
But he says of the show which he almost single-handedly created before suffering burnout: "There was a conscious decision to have nobody grow or learn much."
"The characters pop. Somehow you get more out of it than you put into it."
Everyones got to own everything these days... like the fat women I work with. We all work in the same unit so we all share, exept them, they have there names written on sticky tape to there bench and seats and knives. Then all the blokes get bollocked at for using them when needed.
Hopefully Beavis & Butthead can fall into that television "comfort zone" where it's been around for a long enough while where they can get away with doing more things, like South Park.
Don't get me wrong, Beavis and Butthead in any form is great, great news (lol'd at the video). But this is bullshit, they have to move away from a great original idea because people are too selfish and greedy about music of all things, it kinda makes me sick.
It's just not the same. I'm a die hard fan of this show and anything "The Judge" puts out. Granted, all pilot episodes are ussually pretty weak because they want to get a feel of the fanbase or in ,this case, the die hards and the potentially new ones. But the music video commentary was the best part of the show. I watched the old episodes on Netflix a week or so ago and they didn't have the music video bits and I was quite disappointed. It's just not the same. Hopefully, artists will get fully behind the show again and it can also be a great show to even debut all the new videos.

the new episode had music video commentary and tbqh the show was in top form. Very funny still. My favorite part was at the end of the LMFAO video - "we saved the community center!"
Yeah, I agree more with the comments than this article. It appears that they will still be doing music videos (yesterday's episode featured MGMT, Skrillex, and LMFAO) as long as they can get permission to do so. I hope they'll still do videos of the Rock genre, it shouldn't be too hard to do so for a number of artists.
this explains why last night's episode wasn't funny. if they're gonna play shitty music videos, at least rip them to shreds like they used to. people need to stop getting their panties in a bunch.
The preview video shown here looks pretty funny, but I was a bit disappointed in the premiere episode. The "Werewolves in Highland" episode wasn't all that funny except for a few chuckles here and there. The "Crying" episode was much funnier, but still sub par. Ripping on Jersey Shore was kind of funny, but the music videos sucked and it seems like Judge didn't even bother to rip into them like he used to. Maybe he doesn't want to get sued by the few bands that will allow their videos on the show? Seems like everything has gotten much more bureaucratic since the 90s.
Now is the best time ever for them to rip on music videos because they've gotten so ridiculous and the "artists" are taking themselves more seriously than ever.
Black Eyed Peas, Nickelback, Kanye West, Bieber, Gaga, Steven Tyler, you get the idea. There's so much potential there. Sucks they can't use it.
I'm glad they're back but they need to put their roots back in of Metal. This is so dumb. Bands are crying because they get made fun of. What maturity. They should make an episode about the bands who are crying about being made fun of lol.
I would have loved to see them rip the crap out of some of these new artist! They would have endless material.
Ah well, just good to have them back on the air!
Didn't the artists consider it might just give them more publicity to have their video made fun of on Beavis and Butthead?
The music industry is so political that you almost need a law degree just to consider going into the industry.
Plus, it means 'about' - not ultra/super/mega, etc.
Actually, in German is a prefix to indicate an increased excess (In this case anyways with the word "cool") of a word. So yes, it still is uber cool news, and you can have uber-thumbs down as well
They aren't claiming any ownership of any song, so they shouldn't have to get permission. It's like saying that I have to get the artist's permission before I express my opinions about their song.

If Beavis and Butthead give it thumbs up, the song skyrockets to the top of the charts. If they say it sucks, it falls off the face of the earth. That's how it was in the 90's. It could be different today though, because nowadays any publicity is good publicity, even if they're ripping your head off because people will still buy into you. :/

"Yeah, yeah. They danced like, so they could hunt down the big mammoth."
"*UHH-HUH-HUH* That sucks. Why didn't they just go to McDonald's?"
-Achmed, the Dead Terrorist-

I did watch last night just like many others..i may be wrong about this but they did show atleast 2 music vids..as much as this sucks that there not allowed to do this anymore..i really didnt expect to see many music vids for the fact mtv doesnt show them anymore..
they still had music videos on there...they're just not able to cap on whatever ones they like. but the rips they did on Jersey Shore and Twilight were hilarious.
Here's my thoughts - if the artist says "yes", then no matter who else WROTE the song, or who else OWNS the song, it should be allowed. Kanye West said yes, but somebody who isn't Kanye West said no? Then it should be yes.
For example, if Coldplay had a music video on there, there's no reason why anybody other than the members of Coldplay should be the one to say if it's ok. The artist's name isn't "The Producer that helped out with a Kanye West song", it's "Kanye West". It's like not being allowed to use an Apple phone even if Steve Jobs gave it to you.
The guys who are playing in the popular bands they'd mock probably grew up on Beavis & Butthead. I can't see it being too hard for them to find bands that are ok with it.

And I bet if there was an article from some artist complaining that Mike Judge didn't seek his permission, you would be among the first to cry foul and throw insults in the direction of Mr. Judge. If you own something, you have a right to decide what others can do with it, it doesn't matter if it is a piece of land or a musical work. I can't be too hard on you though, it is after all the fault of a generation of idiotic hipster musicians that kids don't value music these days.

Actually i wouldn't.
"once upon a time" when there weren't all the stuck up make-money-quick laws of today and music was about art and expression, there was a little humor left in the world. I'm sure nobody cared as long as they were doing what they liked and having fun with it, maybe getting enough bucks to survive the day. They may have loved the satisfaction of being recognised by Beavis and Butthead and had a few laughs themselves.
Now it's just spoilt brats screaming for their money whenever they can and making an album only if they have to.

The real reason you can't be too hard on him is you're not actually making a point, just generalizing. Poorly, too.
Remember when Eminem wouldn't let "Weird Al" do a video parody to his song "Lose Yourself" even though Eminem parodied Michael Jackson, Elvis, and a whole slew of other artists? Kind of off the topic a little bit, but I'm reminded of those kind of double standards.
its not like mtv plays music anymore anyway!!! Other than Bevis and Butthead, there is noting even remotely cool on mtv..... its all ghey!!!!! I miss cool shows like headbangers ball!
Article title is very misleading, they can still bad mouth music videos (with permission) and i thought the selection from the first new ep was pretty good, but i thought them riffing over jersey shore was pretty funny as well.
Well there goes the highlight of th show (besides, of course, Cornholio and Butt Head's distinctive laugh, lmfao)
I gota admit, though. The Jersey Shore thing was great. They should do that for Justin Bieber or Ke$ha or something!
