Billy Corgan: American Girls Are Sluts

Smashing Pumpkins closed the Main Stage at Carling Weekend: Reading August 26.

Taking to the stage at 10pm, the Chicago band made their way through 90 minutes of material old and new.

The full moon was amplified against a cloudless sky as they tore through favourites including 'Tonight, Tonight', '1979' and 'Today'.

Midway through the set stage cameras panned the crowd, which included a scantily clad young woman, about whom Corgan commented "There's something about a girl who's willing to take her top off so quickly."

"American girls are sluts too," he added. "See - isn't it great to be alternative - You can say all those things."

Corgan then launched into a solo acoustic version of '1979'.

"We're very humbled to be back on this stage," Corgan concluded at the end of the show "Yes, miracles can happen."

Thanks for the info to NME.com.

thank you. there was no such thing as emo when pumpkins were out. that was the one cool thing about the label "alternative". it could include everything from SP to the Cure to NIN. of course, NIN is industrial and Cure is...well, i'm still not sure what the Cure is (other than great music, of course), but it seemed like there were more opened minds back then.

ah...this is the same argument my mother has given me time and time again, but she listend to disco so what does she know about real music (don't hurt me disco fans). it's becuase as mutch as we'd like to the it's still just rock and roll all of it, it isn't, the times are a changing, you can't listen to sum 41 or alkaline trio and expect the same feeling from slipknot and lamb of god. just as you can't expect to get the same feel from the smashing punkins as from...nirvana or rancid or other bands.

however, not listening to a band just cause it's emo is wrong, and the smashing punpkins are an awsome band, I will never deny that. so yes listen to it, but labels are there so people can find what they like

You'd have to be a pretty lame human being to only listen to bands of a specific sub-genre. I met a person that ONLY listened to deathmetal and hated everything else. I think genres actualy hinder you from finding bands you will like as opposed to help you.

I still have no clue how I could compare the Pumpkins to "Emo" music, Billy doesn't sing like "Emo" and he has real Guitar solos and the rest of the band cooks also, and I agree with the Quote about American Chicks.

Seriously, let's stop with the emo crap. SP are old alt-rock and they're good. Just like classic emo, like Jawbreaker and maybe even up to the one band everyone name drops Sunny Day Real Estate..I'm not talking about mall punk, or mall emo which is what most people here know of, or just completely mislabel everything that. Thanks MTV, you've destroyed more good music. Thanks.

WRONGGGGG. Emo was really just blossoming then, but it's popularity died out later on when those bands were getting heralded as "amazing" and junk. Emo could even trace it's roots to Fugazi really. I don't know why people fray from the term, it's just that people are stupid i guess. Hahaha.

oh no! anything but the terrible emo! god forbid somebody label's the Pumpkins' music as emotional! If anyone ever dared to suggest such an idea, then surely I could never listen to them again. That would surely ruin my reputation as a self-important music-elitist prick!

jesus christ, music is music, some *******'s ever-so important opinion-based label of a band doesn't make them suck, all it means is that he or she doesn't like the sound and nothing more.

Incidentally, "emotion" exists in just about every band's music, otherwise they wouldn't be able to write anything other than bland, meaningless songs. It's just unfortunate that someone somewhere confused the label for bands who pour more melancholy and sad emotion into their music than most with pop-punk and bad haircuts

The fact that you have to ask shows that:
1: you don't know what emo is
2: you really don't even know if emo exists, but you think you do
3: it doesn't matter.

I would think he's back with them, since APC is finished.

As for the whole music-labeling thing: It's really starting to anger me, as well. Not just the big ones, but even more so the tiny little sub-genres that no-one's ever heard of. It seems these days that just about every band out there has their own genre, and it gets very confusing, and just plain stupid. Either don't label yourself at all, or give yourself something more vague, like just, "Rock" or "Metal" or "Punk". It's a lot less confusing and will get a lot more people to show interest. Like a buddy of mine is in a band and they categorize themselves as "grindcore". ...WTF IS GRINDCORE? I've heard everything they've ever done. It's Death Metal. I ask him what differentiates "grindcore" from Death Metal and he can't even come up with an answer. Really annoying. Like back when the term "nu-metal" first came around. Nu-Metal was a term invented by MTV when they realized that Linkin Park didn't really sound like anything else they had heard before. So they pulled a term out of their asses, and slapped it on them, then rushed to cram as many more bands as they could into it, because god-forbid there be anything unique in music. After several years the nu-metal tag had been slapped on (some more often than others) bands ranging everywhere from Linkin Park to Korn, to Slipknot, to Disturbed, to Tool, to Chevelle, to Limp Bizkit. It's rediculous. These bands have very little in common, musically, but they all ended up at some point with the nu-metal tag for that exact reason.

Given the right circumstance for each type of female and any girl can be a slut, famous rock guys is one for many a girl….we are blessed with our success!. Anyway, labels have been around for EVER...from the start. That’s one thing that's wrong with this world; we are too much into “Clicks” (yes even us guys). We want to feel part of something that’s deferent from others. We try to be unique by banding into groups with others that are different and unique….like us….?.... (See, in print it doesn’t make sense either). When I was in HS I didn’t try to be different. I was me. I hung out with the Metal Heads on one day, the Goths on Wed. during lunch, the smokers in the bathroom, the preps by my lockers and the geeks and geek’etts in some of my AP classes (those girls loved having a “bad boy” with long hair in their class to talk to…they were curious. I wasn’t a “bad boy” but they LABELED me right away. In my early teens I was a metal head but then I started to listen to any thing I liked. I’ll even admit that I was listening to Poison from the minute there first song aired, and yes I got flack for listening to a bunch of guys in drag, ha-ha. But that’s what labels do, they give others the ability to make you feel embarrassed (or worse) for not conforming to their ways. -Free your mind…and the rest will follow (ah now that was a hot song/video)

It was a truly awesome show though...probably the best I've been to. The bands on the Sunday weren't that great, but the Pumpkins made it the best day!! Reading was way better than Leeds, too. Pumpkins didn't even do Cherub Rock at Leeds did they? hah.

American girls aren't sluts. Just stupid. I mean, have you ever watched MTV? It's no wonder the collective intelligence of that country has dropped so significantly over the last couple decades. Pop stars as role models? WTF? Why? Ask anyone at TRL who Gregor Mendel is and you'd get, "um, duh." Ask them who Ashley Simpson is and you get,"WOOOHOOOO YAYYYY WOOHHOOOOO!!"
