Billy Corgan Launches Spiritual Website

Billy Corgan might have a lot going on with this new re-rebooted Smashing Pumpkins, but that's not going to stop the man from tapping into his spiritual side. As the Pumpkins' website reports, Corgan has launched a new website called Everything From Here To There. From the looks of things, the new site will be something like a religious blog for Corgan and various guest writers.

Here's how Corgan himself describes it: "This is not a place of judgment, nor a place of making proof. We begin with the idea that there is a God. We begin with the undying belief that there is a unifying intelligence that manifests itself in Every-thing."

On the site itself, Corgan writes that "The purpose of this website is to discuss openly and without fear concepts of Mind-Body-Soul integration," and he makes sure to point out that the site isn't intended to promote any particular religion and that he respects all faiths. Also: "Mind-Body-Soul integration is the primary focus of this site, and how it can best manifest in our daily life."

"spirituality" is an ambiguous term, that doesn't always necessitate irrationalism or unfounded belief. it loosely encompasses metaphorical description of metaphysics, and a sense of underlying unity in the universe.

personally, i don't consider myself "spiritual", as the term has a lot of bad connotations, and i think that by the latter definition, anyone who thinks about things is spiritual, so it becomes an impractical term. but it is important to recognize that one's decision to use the label is purely a matter of preference.

He states quite bluntly (assuming this article is accurate) that the website will be making discussions on the assumption that there is a God. A capitalized 'god,' which is basically saying "we're operating under the assumption that the Christian God exists."

i don't think at any point he ever just decided to assume god exists. i'm sure he has reasons, he was just saying that the site is intended for those who believe in god. i don't think at any point he said "this is the objective truth that i believe with 100% certainty, and everyone else should believe it too". i disagree with his views, but i see no problem with him starting a site. if his beliefs truly are ill-founded, then this will only allow the opportunity for him to be more critical of them.

not sure how i got into this, defending christians and all, but how do you personally know that he believes all of those things? it seems you have christianity categorized as some pretty concrete thing that necessitates a literal interpretation of the bible and belief in a pretty long list of things. the definition of christianity, just like everything else, varies immensely from one person to the next. i don't even know if corgan is comfortable with the term "christian" as a religious description, just that he believes jesus is in some way an example that should be followed. unless you know this because you read somewhere that corgan believes in all those things, you're also doing that guilt by association thing. i don't know why i'm even bothering. hopefully on his site there will be a forum where you can debate him on it and figure out exactly where he's coming from(i doubt it). that's the only way anything will be accomplished.

He was allegedly crucified (let's take note that there is no historical documentation outside of the Gospels to support this claim) because the threatened the power of the Jewish leaders of the time. People were following him, he was leading a rebellion against the traditions of Judaism at that time. He wasn't crucified because of faith; the Jewish leaders of the time promoted faith in Yahweh just as Jesus supposedly did.

But when you waltz in telling people "I'm the only son of your God, bow down to me," there's going to be some backlash from the people who want to maintain the status quo and their power.

No, it's not just as easily insane to believe I and you exist as compared to an invisible being that created the universe, likely listens to millions of prayers a second, and controls every facet of the universe. The idea of an omniscient, omnipotent being is nothing but an infinity placed in the equation; it is much more sensible to be skeptical of such logic than it is to be skeptical about your own existence.

I think it's interesting, really. I think people are bashing Corgan because of a misunderstanding and the bad press and negative talk he seems to be getting almost every time he speaks. Honestly, I respect Corgan for what he's been trying to do with his music and his incorporation of religious site of discussion. Corgan is encouraging the masses to discuss religion and do it in a tolerant manner so we might come to some understanding about who we are as individuals lest we forsake the search of truth in this world. I love pumpkins, i used to regard billy as near godlike but i have to say since Jimmy left it seems like he is just trying to keep the fire burning with no wood left. Its over.

the line about a fickle fascination with god isn't intended to be negative, that song is literally about god, only in more of a deistic sense, and about human beings having a desire to be godlike.

also, the line in the song zero isn't intended to be negative about god either. he's sort of saying that he is an enemy of society or the status quo, his characterizations of himself as something bad are only relative to those who he believes are faulty. and simply saying "god is empty" doesn't mean he thinks god is bad or that god doesn't exist. if you think about it, the thing that gives human beings meaning is the fact that we have identity. our identity ultimately is the product of our lack of knowledge and resources. if we all knew everything and all had everything, we would have no motivation to act, no reason to do or be anything. by that logic, meaning is derived from being what we consider "flawed". in turn, by that logic, god could in a sense be considered "empty". that does not necessarily mean that god is wrong or that aspiration to be godlike is ill-founded.

I hope someday that you will find God on your own terms, but with the rut you've placed yourselves into intellectually, it doesn't seem likely.

People make fun of him because he use to make amazing music, and has progressively gotten better at making mediocre garbage hardly worthy of even being in the shadow of his older material. I don't think anyone can help but gag as they watch Billy go from grunge only to hop on the goth trend in the late nineties, then suffer the mid-life crisis that is Zeitgeist. He's probably only so religulous now so that he can have someone other than himself to blame for his musical downfall.

Don't get me wrong...I love The Smashing Pumpkins...you know that band with Billy, James, Jimmy, and D'Arcy. I'm just not fond of Billy Corgan + guests and their SP covers.

I would just like to point out, and I'm paraphrasing Billy here, but in the DVD If All Goes Wrong... Billy states that his new music is a way of moving FORWARD, and besides doesn't anyone agree with Pete Townsend, when he says that people don't want artists change? I mean my God, How is an artist supposed to grow and develop? It seems like people these days are only concerned with only their needs, and could care less about the person standing next to them.
