's "Black Album
" is officially one of the longest charting albums in history, with 282 weeks in the Billboard 200.
In 2009 the self-titled album, better known at the "Black Album", overtook Shania Twain
's 1997 hit "Come On Over
" as the best selling album of the Soundscan era. Today, it has sold more than 15.7 million copies, according to Blabbermouth
However, Pink Floyd
's "Dark Side Of The Moon
" has been in the Billboard 200 longer than any other LP, at 800 weeks. Despite being available for decades, it was overtaken in sales by Adele
" this week.
While some fans saw the "Black Album" as a relatively mainstream album, it became a turning point for the band. Speaking upon its release in 1991, drummer Lars Ulrich
described their change in direction:
"We felt inadequate as musicians and as songwriters (early in our career). That made us go too far, around 'Master Of Puppets' and on '...And Justice For All', in the direction of trying to prove ourselves. We'll do all this weird-a-- s--t sideways to prove that we are capable musicians and songwriters.
In August last year, producer Bob Rock
revealed new secrets about their recording process:
"They had broken through to one level, but they still weren't on mainstream radio. When they came to me, they were ready to make that leap to the big, big leagues. A lot of people think that I changed the band. I didn't. In their heads, they were already changed when I met them.
Bob went on to say that he taught them that Lars "had to be the focal point musically. So on certain songs, the band played to Lars. They followed him. It made a real difference.
On frontman James Hetfield
, Rock said they spoke a lot about great songwriters like Bob Dylan
, John Lennon
and Bob Marley
. "I think he saw that he could write for himself but still touch other people,
" he said. "It was a struggle for him, but he had a tremendous breakthrough as a writer.
Metallica will play the album from start to finish at several European festivals this summer, and are even preparing their own festival named Orion Music + More
. Further, the band could be ditching record labels altogether, as their contract with Warner has expired.
