Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band: Greatest American Rock Band

A poll by Gibson.com website staff has named Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band as the greatest American rock group of all time, ahead of other heavyweight contenders such as Guns N' Roses, Van Halen and Metallica. According to HenneMusic, Gibson unveiled their top 50 list in an announcement that was synched up with the 4th of July holiday weekend. Bruce and co. were followed in second and third place by Aerosmith and Nirvana respectively.

It would seem, however, that the opinions of Gibson.com writers do not necessarily reflect that of their readers. In a separate reader's poll of the top 25 American rock bands, E Street didn't even crack the top 20, taking the 21 spot just below Talking Heads. It was Van Halen who Gibson's readers voted into the top spot with Guns N' Roses in second and The Allman Brothers in third. It is interesting to note that older acts that charted in the writers poll such as Elvis Presley and The Blue Moon Boys, Booker T. and The M.Gs and Buddy Holly and The Crickets, were completely absent from the list put together by the readers.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band's ascension to the top of the list comes after the recent passing of E Street saxophonist Clarence Clemons. The musician, who was also known as The Big Man, died on June 18th aged 69 from complications caused by a stroke. Onstage tributes to the performer have been made by Bon Jovi, U2 and Eddie Vedder since his passing.

I'm perfectly happy with Bruce Springsteen at #1. He makes actually music, not just rock jams or anthems. His songs have definite structure and reach highs and lows. That said, I completely disagree with aerosmith at #2, and: even though Van Halen I was an incredible album, the crap that came after it (excluding certain catchy numbers) should disqualify Van Halen from the top 10. They do deserve to be on the list though.

That's a pretty respectable list, I'd put Aerosmith way lower, but its pretty hard to argue with all the inclusions, everyone would have different numbers for bands but I think most people would have at least 45 of these bands.

Before you start spewing flames, take a second to realize that this list isn't about the Best Bands of All Time, of even the Best Bands to Ever Come out of America, but the Best American Bands. That completely earns Bruce Springsteen's band a top spot. They defined America for their generation.

With that said, any list that tries to condense all the different elements of American rock bands into a simple 1-50 list deserves little attention. You listen to music you want to listen to, and who cares what Gibson thinks? Besides, no one 'Greatest Bands Ever' list can be perfect; it's all opinionated.

Oh, and as a side note: Nobody cares if you're favorite underground death-metal band was left off of the list, so don't even!

Ok, I am a HUGE Springsteen fan. But despite my bias, I think that he really should be number 1. He has had amazing staying power (multiple hit albums in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's), has created fans from multiple generations while not abandoning his original fans, and has evolved very naturally. His large, broad, diverse fanbase represents middle-class America more than any other group's. His songs are honest, raw, pure, and connect with many people. His ability to have so much substance and be so popular is something very very few of his popularity can do.

Yes, this is a "fanboy" response, but it is still very true.

There are things that are ridiculous about both (Wilco?! Poco!? Cracker?!), but in general, I like the top of the Reader's Poll and the overall-ity of the Staff Poll. Although I don't see why Alice in Chains didn't make the Staff Poll at all. I've never even heard of a few of the bands on the Staff Poll (Big Star, X, NRBQ, Yo La Tenga) so I can't make a fair assessment on the inclusion.

But overall, Staff Top 10 is ridiculous. I'll just mash both lists together, and I'm cool with it; especially if I don't acknowledge any kind of ranking.

Sure, they've got some good songs, and they're a hood enough band, but their bad material far outweighs their good stuff.

While Buddy Holly's absence from the Readers' Poll makes me sad, The Clash's exclusion from both lists makes me happy. Glad to see they're not as over-rated as they used to be.

Fact is though, American egos would take a mighty blow if you mixed the European/Global Rock bands into list. Rock was invented here but it surely was not perfected here.

Springsteen is the epitome of American rock music. And not just because of "Born in the USA", which is, in truth, not a great song.

He wrote songs that Americans as people can relate to. Nothing Metallica or Megadeth wrote resonated as deeply with the American people as "Blinded By The Light" or "It's Hard To Be a Saint in the City" did.

I'm glad to see REM and the Pixies on there too.

I'm not surprised at how many people keep bringing this up, seeing on how it is a stupid mistake on my part, but the common sentiment is "Do you know how to read?" or "You know this is AMERICAN bands, right?".

I can say the same thing about pretty much all of you. If you have the time to read my first post where I pretty much made an ass out of myself, it can't be too far of a stretch to look about two posts under my original one where I admitted that I made a stupid mistake.

Sublime should DEFINITELY be on the list. Probably somewhere in the 40s, but reggae and ska are completely misrepresented here. And other than the Ramones at #4 there aren't many punk bands at all. They threw Green Day a bone at #50, but perhaps some real punk like NOFX, Rancid, or Social Distortion should be here. Unless this is an outright popularity contest, in which case I think maybe even blink-182 deserve a spot in the high 40s. They were just as influential as Green Day.

Others that surprised me as missing were Smashing Pumpkins, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi... hell, you could even make a case for Slayer and Megadeth since Metallica is so high up.

and seriously Los Lobos? thats just disappointing.
