Burnt Hendrix Guitar To Be Sold At Auction

One of Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitars, set alight on a London stage more than 40 years ago and thought to have been lost forever, is to be auctioned later this year.

The guitar, a 1965 Fender Stratocaster, was famously doused with lighter fuel and set alight by the rock legend during a one-off performance at London's Finsbury Astoria in March 1967.

Hendrix had to be rushed to hospital with minor burns to his hands after the stunt, and the guitar, slightly damaged along the neck and pickboard, was recovered by his staff.

It eventually ended up in the hands of his press officer, Tony Garland, who stored it in his parents' garage, where it remained until it was unearthed last year by Garland's nephew.

The guitar is among a range of rock memorabilia to be auctioned by the Fame Bureau in London on September 4th. It has an estimate of 500,000 pounds ($999,000). Other lots include The Doors frontman Jim Morrison's last notebook of poems.

"When Hendrix set this guitar alight it marked a watershed in live performance," said Ted Owen, director of acquisitions at the auction house.

"He raised the bar of what could be expected and paved the way for a series of imitations and pastiche that exist to this day."

Hendrix, who died in 1970, burnt two guitars on stage - he repeated the stunt at a festival later in 1967 - but the one to be auctioned is the only example that survives intact.

A previous auction of a Hendrix guitar, known as the Woodstock Stratocaster, fetched $1.8 million.

What they should do is put it in the Jimi Hendrix Museum. I've never had anyone confirm it, but it is rumored to be located in Seattle, Jimi's hometown. If it does exist, I think that is where Jimi would want it(aside from digging him up and reburying him with it!). As retarded as that sounds, it just shows that this guitar is THE guitar that led to all of these other bands trashing their stuff. People all over the world have probably tried to light up their guitars at one point. It's a piece of history, just like the Declaration of Independence, and you don't see people bidding on that do ya?

I read about these things from time to time happening and they are a shock each time. Some Kid finds Jimi Hendrixs burnt guitar in his uncles garage, its right out of a story or movie. Is it outragous or is it normal?. Maybe it was stored in the attic of the garage, where bees make many nests and the attic heats up to 130 degrees in the summer. Maybe it was wrapped in old newspaper or a rain weakened carboard box. All this, even the auction sounds slightly inappropriate behavior. If this is the only example or one of three in existance it probably should be turned over to a major museum. If anyone ever dug up a guitar size piece of christs cross(not that he is more important) with the letters christ on it, i dont think they would sell it to some anonymous high bidder, although there would be plenty of ethusiastic bidders. I would buy this if i could, and cherish it for a amount of time, then give it to a museum forever. I wont be buying a piece of christs cross or Jimi Hendrixs only burnt guitar in existance, im saving my money for a The Who ticket for there upcomming tour. For all those offended by my jesus references, fear not, i meant no harm to your beliefs. The book of Morrisons poems also sounds extremely signifigant and also deserves to be in a museum. Frank Zappa made a mistake saying it was from Miami (we know Jimi did not burn his guitar at Mimai Pop Festival, may 18th, 1968) so we all thought it came from Astoria (march 31st, 1967). it probably still be decently playable. I read something written by Pete Townshend a few years ago saying that days after a guitar burning Jimi's guitars were just kind of singed. Pete went off saying "well thats not good enough! it should be completely destroyed, you need a proper flame thrower!"

You have a point and I guess it has been confirmed it is the guitar. However it was said that this is the first place the guitar went and it has sat there over all these years. Back then everyone had a "what the hell" sort of attitude, no one expected a guitar like this would sell for this much money. Take for example, if i was famous and I had a wreck guitar that I beat on stage and set alight, I wouldn't think much of it, I would throw it away or in my garage, it doesn't become historical until the artist dies and only 30 or 40 years later.

I ve done some research about the Finsbury Park 31 march 1967 Hendrix guitar,and I thought you might be interested...

I have really great shots backstage before the evening show where JIMI is playing (holding) a 1963 or 1964 strat.
The guitars had been seen at the Marquee and at the German shows, but never seen afterwards
In any case the guitar that JIMI used on stage is a 1963 or 1964 with the Fender spaghetti logo
clay dots on the fingerboard and so called green pickguard
The guitar that will go on sale could not possibly be the ASTORIA guitar because
it's a 1965 model , with regular white guard , Fender transition logo (significantly larger)
and pearl dot markers on the board...
There's another guitar that Jimi had with him that day and it's a 1966/1967 large headstock, transition logo and a black finish ( this guitar was also seen after the 31 march 1967)
Also the small sticker at the top of the headstock (fender contour body) is clearly in a different place.
and the wear on the 63/64 start seen in many pictures is not showing on this guitar
There are NO photos of Jimi before the 31 March with a transition logo sunburst strat...
I cannot believe the seller forgot about the guitar for that many years
As far as I am aware all of the BURNT strats are accounted for anyway....

With massive sums of money at stake, items should be properly authenticated as
being what they are being sold as.
This is a typical story further exploiting the memory of the man for big $

There IS conclusive proof that the guitar sold is NOT the guitar set alight
at the said performance!!!! Therefore, when this evidence is presented to the seller/auction house, should the item not be withdrawn from sale to avoid a serious miscarriage of justice?

Of course it is up to the public, and if some ill informed memorabilia fan with more money than sense blows £280,000 then that's his/her loss (and I for one am not interested).....BUT, surely, it is an illegal act and those involved should be brought to account.
