The Cheap Trick have cancelled a show on 1 September in Vancouver because it has been revealed that the firm responsible for the stage which collapsed at the Ottawa Bluesfest last month.
A statement on the Cheap Trick website reads, "Staging for PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) in Vancouver, BC is provided by Mega-Stage, (Berger), who also provided the MBNA Stage that fell on Cheap Trick at Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest on July 17th, 2011."
"All potential alternatives have been explored by the band and promoter and were exhausted, leaving Cheap Trick with no other option than to cancel their September 1st engagement at the PNE."
"Unless current investigation(s) prove otherwise, the band will not, as a matter of principle, but more importantly, as a matter of safety, appear on a Berger stage in the future".
Eight people were injured when the stage came crashing down last month but the band was unharmed.
The disaster was the second time a stage by Groupe Berger has fallen down. It also happened on 30 June, 2009 at the Quebec comedy festival.
Good for them. You have to appreciate how much CT stays on the road and involved in new and interesting projects, and they still kill it every night on stage.
I live in Ottawa and was at the show where this happened. It was looking pretty threatening before they took the stage, and my wife and I were going toward the merch tent when it hit. Just before the wind blew the stage down, we saw a few trees shake violently as the "wall of wind" (at least 140 KPH) hit them, knocking off branches.
That stage was the only structure affected, amazingly enough, but they closed the park right away. I'd be surprised if the company who built it don't get sued, but I hope that the festival is not caught up in this and ends up being cancelled. Bluesfest is a great thing, and I hope organizers find another company to provide the main stage.

Am I the only one who's noticed that this sentence never actually finishes?

I noticed it too. I even read it over numerous times trying to figure out if it was just me. It seems like there is always something off with UG news though.
