Chris Cornell Quits Audioslave

Audioslave singer Chris Cornell has quit the short-lived "supergroup," citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," he said on Thursday, according to Reuters.

Cornell, 42, who rose to fame with defunct Seattle rock group Soundgarden, will reignite his solo career with the May 1 release of "Carry On," his second solo album.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," the part-time Paris restaurateur said in a statement.

The Audioslave split was not unexpected. His colleagues, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, have reunited with singer Zack de la Rocha to resurrect their former band Rage Against the Machine, which will play its first show in seven years at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 29. Rage's plans beyond this show are unknown.

Audioslave formed in 2001, a year after Rage broke up, and recorded three studio albums. In May 2005, it became the first American band to play an outdoor show in Cuba.

Its most recent album, "Revelations," has sold a disappointing 409,000 copies in the United States since its September 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its self-titled 2002 debut sold 3.1 million copies, and the 2005 follow-up "Out of Exile" 1.1 million.

"Carry On," produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones), marks Cornell's first solo release since 1999's "Euphoria Morning," which came out two years after Soundgarden broke up.

The statement also described Cornell as "acrimonious," which a publicist said was the intended term.

Sucks for Audioslave. They were all right in my opinion. Tom's guitar and Chris' voice were kinda wasted on their sound. I hope that RATM reforms permenantly or unless until they call it quits for good. I've always wanted to see them live and hopefully i'll get my chance. As far as a Soundgarden reunion, FAT CHANCE!!! I hate soooo much that i never got to see these guys live in their heyday. Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are in my top 10 albums of all time.

As much as i love em, this was kindof inevidable. As cornell said, they have musical differences, and that was obvious from day 1. The first cd was amazing, and cornell really dug deep to deliver authority in his voice like cochise and tunes like that, but everyone knows he has a softer side, and it came out on later cds. could you see rage writing songs like i am the highway? it will never happen again

I prefered audioslave to rage honestly.. Rage is okay, but not nearly as good as people make them out to be imo. Audioslave had quality songs for sure. Rage wont last either way, weather it is one show or they try to make a album, it just wont work but best of luck to those who get to see them live.

Saw this coming when they announced they weren't touring.

Meh, to be honest, I'd go see a Soundgarden reunion, but 1. It aint happening, and 2. He just doesn't have the voice he had in the early 90s.

Best hope for a Soundgarden reunion is with Chris' older brother on vocals. Peter Cornell still has an amzing voice.

Yeah the signs were adding up but Tom Morello himself said in Guitar World when Revalations came out that they were not going anywhere, in fact he was pretty adamant about it. Who wouldn't love more RATM but the thought of not seeing Audioslave perform again( they DID rock toghether) is making me cry. First Fallout Fags get the number one record & now this. Good music is dying. I'm going to go cry in a corner.

I'll miss audioslave, unless soundgarden gets back together, that would be better. I have a feeling that ratm will reunite permanantly now and hopefully soundgarden will do the same. Like if RATM decided to reunite for a few shows then they will likely wanna do a cd or 2 also. I hope Chris doesn't carry on with his solo stuff for too long he's alot better in a band. Kim Thayil is the most underrated guitarist out there, I think he is just as good if not better than morello.

wabusy33 wrote on 02/16/2007 - 01:47 pm / quote |
I was kind of surprised by this news, even though we should all have seen it coming. Audioslave kinda lost their touch though with their last album and even if they were still together they probably wouldn't have lasted after another album anyways. I think the reason why revelations did bad in records sold is because their main single for the album, original fire was horrible.

Well, not completely unexpected (> Tom Morello said he was unsure about the future of AS. ), but still a shock. I found Audioslave a very good band. The only 'good' side of this is that it probably increases the chance of RATM doing more than a single gig. I can only hope though.

Heres my prediction: Wait for Cornell's solo career to flounder on the dreaded second album and watch Soundgarden re-form ready for the festival circuit next year. Sorted.

I am very disappointed that Audioslave is breaking up over just one RATM show. I thought Chris and Tom said this would not lead to them breaking up. If there is no future Rage reunion or Soundgarden reunion I will be very sad. As for Chris next solo album I wish him the best of luck in the future as for anything Rage puts out I'm sure will sell 10x better than any solo album that he puts out. We can only hope for a Rage reunion as for a Soundgarden reunion that will never happen, well maybe 10 years from now when Chris realizes it was a bad idea to go solo, we can only hope.

Cornell's latest interview with MTV kinda says it all:

"...In my case [taking time off from Audioslave] produced a very prolific writing period, and getting back into writing songs on my own, liking what that means — which is sort of a freedom and time to just experiment with music to a degree I kind of like more — and making records that have everything I like about music in them"

This guy is an incredibly talented songwriter with a great voice who produced most of the material for every project he's ever been part of... except for audioslave (where most of the music was written by the other guys) where he wasn't the center of the creative output anymore. And I think he needs that in the long run, so it's kind of remarkable that they lasted this long.

So anyway, I enjoyed every Audioslave record a LOT and I truly hope that all of these guys will continue making music - as if Zack de la Rocha and Kim Thayil's departure from the music scene wasn't a huge waste of talent already

I kinda expected this to happen but not so soon. Probably way after Coachella. It was really obvious to *anyone* tat Chris and Tom/Brad/Tim had different tastes in music anyways. When I heard Original Fire I was really depressed at the direction they had taken.

Thankfully the potential for a RATM reunion is higher than its been in years. Specifically since Coachella is confirmed and maybe theyll announce a world tour after the show. Unless things go really really bad then I look forward to seeing Rage this summer.

this was going 2 happen sooner or l8r i just didnt expect it 2 happen so soon. i give cornell props tho, cuz rite now he wants 2 do solo work. hes doing what he wants 2 and not what the business is forcing him 2 do, which is great. morello and the guys will do sumthin else, theyr amazingly talented. audioslave was a good supergroup and ill miss their stuff.

also, this sets the stage 4 RATM 2 reunite beyond coachella

After Audioslave's last album, lame, I'm glad they're done. Morello and the guys can do better than that, even if it's not with De La Rocha. YOu could tell that Cornell had a big influence on the songwriting. Let him have his solo album, I say. He's a bad ass singer either way. And a big HELL YEAH to Rage re-forming. With Rage getting back together and Vinnie Paul doing a new group, could this year really start any better? Really?

Right, but I'm more surprised Morello lasted this long, being such a politically charged guy and all in a drastically less political band.

Guys nowhere does it say that RATM is getting back together for good. They are reuniting for a gig in April, beyond that they are uncertain.

Sure it might be cool for RATM to reunite for more than one concert, but I doubt it is going to happen, chances are Tom Tim and Brad are going to look for a new singer or just become some crazy experimental instrumental group.

I'm also rather disapointed with Cornell leaving the band. I thought Audioslave finally came together and developed a sound of their own on Revelations. Their previous albums were good but essential RATM instrumentation with soundgarden vocals.

TwistedLogic wrote on 02/16/2007 - 06:37 pm / quote |
So here is the question: What was the source of the personality / musical differences? Was it Cornell being annoyed with Morello always dicking around with his effects or Morello becoming angry with a difficult and possibly arrogant Cornell. The answer to this question will go along to toward answering the next question of which band, RATM or Soundgarden, has a good chance of reforming on a permanent basis. I figure Cornell was sicking of collaborating and wanted to get back to his solo thing. Is so RATM might be back for more than a cup of coffee. YEAAAAA

I think Cornell didn't want any part of his political crusade. If anyone remembers it was agreed politics would stay out of the band. Im guessing Morello wanted the band to go more political like RATM were. Its no one's fault just different views. Best of luck to both camps. Just to add - if there ever was a Soundgarden reunion that would be ace.

But anyway, as much as this sucks, Cornell is a musical genious and anything he does post-audioslave will continue to be amazing. He doesn't NEED Audioslave OR Soundgarden. Doesn't matter what he does, it'll be good. As for Rage....I love em like the rest of you, if not more, but there time has passed (and trust me, I STILL listen to their albums) but there will be no new Rage album even if they do a full fledged tour, trust me.

With all respect I'm new to Rage and Have not heard of any of their songs, and My brother and mom says that their pretty. Heck I still have bands like disturbed, tool and Killswitch engage( Also other Bands too!) to spike my taste, even though it's a different Genre. I'll miss Audioslave, and wish I would have listened to rage and Garden, but That'll probably come in due time, Maybe. I wish the five best of luck to all of them.Rock out Audio, Garden, and Rage.

If Rage don't stay together, then this will be a waste of an incredible band.

A good band breaking up is only a good thing when they've done all they can do. Better to break up and go their seperate ways than to marr their legacy by releasing a bunch of sub-standard albums that they made because they were expected to make them, right?

I liked Audioslave, I really did. But I'd rather hear music that the artists have their hearts in. Chris wants to follow up his solo work, so more power to him. Obviously Morello, Commerford and Wilk are going to be busy with Rage. Better this way than all of them trying to divide their time between Audioslave, Rage and Cornell and Morellos solo work and all of it coming to nothing.

I hope Rage do a world tour and then leave it at that. It's mostly because I don't know whether they can still make music as good as they used to, I'd rather them release nothing than ruin the good work they've done in the past.

I'm surprised to see so many soundgarden fans who actually think a reunion between them is possible. I mean yeah it's possible, but very very unlikely. The reasons for why they broke up pretty much shut the book on them getting back together. I don't feel like explaining plus all i have to go on are interviews and books, and me being the cynic i am tend to form my own opinions. RATM getting back together looks like an eventuality, and i'm hoping it is. I hope seven years is enough to heal any wounds that Zach's "creative and personal" differences might have left.

I won't make the mistake of saying that the break up of Audioslave is good news. Audioslave were a very good band. Top notch riffs, powered and drived by Chris Cornell's powerfull voice. The had 3 great albums, all of which did very well. Their break up is indeed a sad and unfortunate happening. Audioslave I salute you for your contribution towards the modern age of rock.

Though with that being said and Audioslave taken out of the picture, I feel it is sensible to assume that Rage Against the Machine are back. This is furthered by their announcement to reunite for a concert.

Do you hear that brothers of rock? It is time to Take the Power Back!

There is a lot of desperation in these posts. RATM is not back together, they have reunited for a single show and have stated that it does not mean they are back together. Obviously if they have reunited for even one show it shows the possibility of a more permanent reunion....but come on folks, don't make assumptions simply because you would like to see it. And those who do, are sadly going to be dissapointed. Audioslave breaking up isnt exactly shocking, i dont like it. I am a big fan of what they have done. I was very eager to hear their first album because NO ONE can ever replace Zach De la Rocha as a vocalist. He is too unique an artist. I think both RATM and Soundgarden were absolutely amazing, but they are separate entities and Audioslave could never have been a replacement for either band. Both of those bands broke at the height of their popularity leaving all of us so very shocked. Chris Cornell did not want to tour in support of Revelations....yeah not surprising he decided to leave the band. Audioslave was never recieved very well because people expected WAY too much from them, and werent ever given a fair chance. "they are okay, but they are no Rage, or even Soundgarden" most people disliked Audioslave because of this, and wrote them off as a substandard band.....man thats ****ed, how the hell to you compete with either one of those bands? well enough of a rant, Hope i get the chance to see Rage before i die, but in the mean time theres Chris Cornells new solo album, Tom Morello's project, Nightwatchmen, due out in the spring, and who knows what else the future will see for us?

nah its a good thing, because if they continued producing albums like that of revelations you wouldnt be saying that very statement in like a year or two down the line. rather them break up while they still got some respect than just die out with their sub standard albums as that other dude said.

plus, this does strengthen the cause of a RATM reunion, at least for 1 last album and tour, thats all id need

How is he being self-centred? He quit because of 'personality conflicts and musical differences'. If you've been in a band you should know that it's very difficult to work under those conditions.

He never said that, you did, meaning he's not arrogant. As for the instruments thing, he originally played drums in Soundgarden when they formed and I think he can play the guitar. Anyway, there are plenty of solo musicians who can't even play an instrument, at least he'll be writing the music himself, even if he can't play the bass parts or whatever. In fact, I just re-read your comment and there's pretty much no basis for anything you said.

Anyway, Rage are blatantly going to reform after that show. At least, I hope so. They were always better than Audioslave. If only Soundgarden could get together as well. But I guess the solo project will be good.

I agree with someone else who said Cornell was a better vocalist than Zack, but if rap doesn't at all appeal to you, then obviously you're not going to like Rage. Doesn't change the fact that they were a legendary band.

Actually, while everyone's been saying "read the news you (childish anger response over audioslave breaking up) they're only doing one show" I find it incredibly hard to believe they're going to be able to keep it at just one show if they do actually play it.

Seriously how wierd would it be to reunite for ONLY one show? At least tour once. I'd actually be surprised if they DID'T announce more for after the show.... and if it IS only one show there damn well better be cameras to document it.

But that his publicist said "acrimonius" was the right term actually does imply Cornell's kind of a dick so you may have a point there.

And Audioslave was ok, but... eh.

you people who said Revelations sucked. RATM was *meh* at best. I don't plan on buying the new RATM album if there is one. Tim Commorford was like my biggest
influence as far as bass playng goes. How am I going to listen to him now? It would be F-ing AWESOME!!! if Soundgarden got back together. I am so pissed about this. I'd Rather have Audioslave back together.

Okay, I'm gonna get a lot of flack for saying this, but **** Rage Against the Machine. Every song and bit of music they do sounds the same. Tim Commeford and Brad Wilkes are great musicians but seriously Tom Morello is an overrated guitarist. I don't care if his solo styling is "unique". It sounds like shit. Great rhythm guitarist, but terrible soloist. Ah, whatever, they put out three good albums. . . I'm satisfied. Here's hoping Chris hooks back up with Kim Thayil and reunites Soundgarden. I'm sure they can drag Matt Cameron away from the "sinking ship" that is Pearl Jam. Don't think it can't happen. Everyone thought the Police would never play again. . . or even Rage for that matter.

I don't know about that. I mean Layne Staley and Chris Cornell are both great singers and top ten in my opinion, but at the same time their voices are apples and oranges. They have different textures to their voices. It'd sound weird with him singing in Alice in Chains. . . then again it might work. Who knows?

chris's solo stuff is generally highly regarded; it does not 'blow' at all. Also, he did not single handedly split up soundgarden, they all pretty much decided to quit. i believe rage reforming is probably a result of chirs quitting, not the other way round. Soundgarden is my favourite band ever, but i dont think they should reform, apart from maybe doing a tour or something. Soundgarden is a legendary band, and Chris himself has stated that he would rather keep Soundgarden as a great memory, and not mess it up by trying to reform and reclaim former glories. as for rage, im more than excited to see what happens

Actually, I'm happy Audioslave split. They were together long enough to give us some great albums (especially their self titled). And it is true that a Soundgarden reunion is very, very unlikely, but there is no doubt that the thought has now entered Chris and Kims minds more than ever.
I like RATM too, but I honestly think that Soundgarden (and Chris solo) are far superior songwriters. I notice that there are a lot of Chris bashers in here, and I'm sure that most didn't know about Chris' solo album (that was successul and fantastic). Not only that but Chris is an amazing instrumentalist. He plays guitar, mandolin, piano, bass, and drums. He recorded and wrote a lot of solos for Soundgarden albums too/ (which combined have won more awards and sold more than RATM's have ever)
Personally, I'm glad he got out. Soundgarden kicks ass.

NO ONE IN THIS FORUM SHOULD EVEN DREAM OF SOUNDGARDEN GETTING BACK TOGETHER. EVER. I know, I know, they are one of my favorite bands as well. Hell Yeah, I'd want to see them get back together. But judging on how they broke up, there would be a lot of stuff to go through before they could even start playing. First of all, Chris' ex-wife I believe was the manager, and i don't know anything about either of the settlements (between the band and her or Chris and her) but i might imagine that she might have some bearing in the reuniting process. And I don't think Chris will go for that. Second, By the time they were doing Down on the Upside, none of the band members were talking to each other. Sorry for the bad news, but i just don't see it. I wish it were possible. As for Chris, I just don't see him doing solo stuff the rest of his life. I think he'll get a new band. Maybe join up with Jerry Cantrell(of Alice in Chains) or Krist Novoselic and repair the damage dealt by crappy emo and hardcore bands.

That makes it sound like just nihilistic music, and that's not true. Yes, (almost) every song is about something political, but it's not just, "The world sucks, **** the government." There is a message throughout the music of just reforming the status-quo to get rid of everything that's wrong with the world.

Yeah Man. Totally on point. What Alice probably meant was that it's foolish to do something or believe in something just because you see a rock star do it. Clearly, it is a statement on individuality, a concept people seem to have forgotten. And Chris never wrote about "christian garbage". True, lots of symbolism is in his writing, but it stems from his days in catholic school. he used his talents and connected some of his ideas with experience. In conclusion, Most, if not ALL of Chris' songs are about his life and what he believes in.

Christian? Because a couple of songs on the first Audioslave album sound like they have religious undertones?

"Run away, now it's Halloween... safe bet is on your
knees, bow your head to the Trinity, that's what blind
dogs believe, but I've heard that before. Blind following blind..."

Yep, that sounds like the work of a great Christian writer.

Some of you kiddies are lucky RATM is coming back, they'll keep it real simple for you. Maybe make a new "Killing in the Name of" for you, so when the cops yell at you for riding a skateboard in a parking lot, you can totally STICK IT TO THE MAN!

I'll tell you this, Chris probably left because his voice is slipping. Listen to him in Soundgarden and even on the first Audioslave record compared to the two latest albums and especially the live disk/dvd. He sounds really bad and that might be why he didn't want to tour anymore. The boys seems like they are a touring group and maybe that's why Rage was reformed. Chris should of layed of the smokes, maybe his voice wouldn't be soo bad.
